I am thinking of going to Australia next year for a minimum of three wks, but it looks as though I will have to go on my own, as friends either can't take more time off work or can't afford it. I'm a little aprehensive about going on my own, I want to have the best possible experience & a) think I will be bored on my own & b) not sure it would be that safe???

Has anyone else been to Aus on their own that can provide advice??

I've been twice, both times alone. Just do your homework before you go and give the dodgy areas a wide berth.
Where in Oz are you going? I can give you advice on Adelaide, Perth and Sydney on places to visit.

I'm not sure yet, I won't be planning the trip until prob the end of Sept, but am a little bit worried about staying in hostels. Some of my male friends have prob made me feel worse as they think it's a bad idea for an attractive girl to be travelling alone (that sounds so corny) but I can kinda see where they are coming from, but at the same time don't want to miss out on a great opportunity

My GF has gone to Aus alone for 8 months (must have been something I said), she's been there for 4 months now, she's loving it. Homework before hand is important, contacts over there are good, friends of friends etc. Speak to as many people as poss who've been, read loads, it wont seem as scary when you know more about it.
Good luck!

I went to Oz on my own a couple of years ago. I did find it quite scary at first but I loved it after a couple of days - in my experience you meet far more people when you're travelling on your own. Partly because you look more approachable (people feel sorry for you!) and partly because you are more likely to talk to other people. I wouldn't be scared of hostels, in fact they are probably the best bet for anyone travelling on their own as they are a great place to meet people. Most places provide lockers for your valuables, and if your not keen on dorms, most of them do private rooms. Wherever you go in Oz I'm sure you'll have an amazing time. In general, I felt much safer there than I do here. Just take the usual precautions and you'll be fine. I'm really jealous!

Me and my mate are going to Australia in five weeks time. We're staying for six months to a year.

Come September, we'll be in Sydney if you need a couple of friendly Sheffield lads to show you the ropes.

I’ve recently returned from 8months in Oz. I went on my own too.
I’ve made some good friends out there and can put you in contact with some friendly peeps in Melbourne/Victoria area as well as Sydney.

I supposed to be seeing one lass from Melbourne who’s lovely, Im sure she could even sort you out with a place to stay and show you the ropes so to speak.

PM me if you want more info.
