Firstly I would have to agree that England are by far a better side now than Italy, as are several other countries (not least France and Brazil).

Add to that the massive scandal hitting Italian football at the moment and I really can't see it happening some how - personally I think they'll do well to get out of their group with USA and Czech Rep both in there.

Italy are as bad as Spain when it come's to the WC they fail every time,they have decent individual players ,but as a team they just fall down,all too often,If not England then Brazil.

I agree, also Marcello Lippi may not even make it to Germany. I read in this mornings paper that he will be accused of being bribed by Juventus to call up their players.

Italy. Not the best squad they've sent to a World cup. They're my prediction for biggest side to go home early, I'm afraid. That groups got Czech Republic written all over it, and the USA are a strong side nowadays - it'll be a Brazil/Germany/Argentina strength side that sends the US home. For Togo 06 read Senegal 02 and Cameroon 90 - unfancied, unheard of, no big names, nothing to lose.

Didn't England trounce them with a reserve team on their turf last summer?? Seem to remember Kieran Richardson scoring a couple! The only reason they're 4th in the world is because they have no real competition in North America and win all their qualifier games with ease and hence they shoot up the world rankings. Football is really starting to take a hold in the states and given their population and attitude/commitment towards sport, I believe the USA will win the world cup by 2018. I'm not sure they're quite there yet though.

A friend of mine is working on the continent for a couple of months (just outside Milan). He says everyone over there reckons England are going to be unstoppable this summer.

I'd go for Gillardino ahead of Toni then, that boy is special IMO - saw a bit of him in Italy last year - we were there the week he signed for the Rossaniri.

A reasonable bet that one of those two will win anyway - all but 3 of the post-war World Cups have been won either by Brazil, or by (West) Germany, or by the host nation (if the table on here (http://worldsoccer.about.com/cs/worldcup/a/wcupwinz.htm) is right, anyway).

But you never know, let's hope this will be the 4th time ...

At least one team in those 3 categories (Brazil, or Germany, or the host) has made it to the final of every World Cup apart from France in 1938, and since the war the only time neither Brazil nor Germany has made it to the final was Argentina 1978.

This is probably very old hat to football fans - just looking up the stats in an idle moment ...

Regarding England though, I try not to build my hopes up because they always come crashing down.

definitely - think it was rio on skysports news this morning that actually said something clever for once- there are more winners in this england team than there ever has been - lamps, gerrard, terry...

my hopes r getting stronger as the days pass on...really want to see us lift the world cup - more than anything!
