I got married last week, and have recently begun the horrid task of changing my surname, which I'm finding to be a complete nightmare. In the last few days, I've had four new bank cards with varying names on, none of them right!
If anyone can offer me any advice on this (particularly with who I need to notify) I'd be very grateful! So far I've only sorted out the bank and am in the process of doing my passport. Will most places accept a photocopy of a marriage certificate? If they all want the original this is going to take forever...
Any help much appreciated!

When I did the legal bit of getting married it wasn't much of a big do (if you understand) as the important bit for me came later...so I sat down about an hour after the office bit and rang round everyone.
Driving Licence
Doctors
Banks
Passport
National Insurance
Tax Office
Work
The DSS if you are on benefits
The people responsible for your house for tenancy or mortgage details.
Credit companies/shop or store cards
That is all that comes to mind. There is no real reason you have to notify anyone...aparently it is a choice not a compulsion to take your fellas name.

It most definitely is a choice, and a very good one at that. By becoming Mrs SLH73, I will hopefully no longer be subjected to crap jokes regarding a certain well known brand of instant coffee. I got sick of them about 20 years ago!
And thanks for the help by the way!
lol, im so glad im not female or have a desire to use the deedpoll service

Something along those lines, yeah. And I was wondering how long it would take for someone to make that joke too! Ah well - I've heard far worse.
Someone made a worse joke than me? I fail to believe it
My jokes are notoriously poor
Start off with your driving licence and passport. From then on you can use these for everywhere else.
Most places like the bank want to see the originals and you shouldn't need to post them as the staff verify that they have seen the originals.

I suppose it's too late now, but when my (new) wife and I married several years ago we decided that she would not change her name (she wasn't married before). We have never regretted this, I feel she is entitled to keep her own identity, no matter what relationship she is in with another.
Perhaps we should allfollow the Icelandic example, where there are no married names. Everyone is simply named by generation: women are named as the daughter of their mother and men as the son of their father. (Causes confusion in the phone book though!
