I've lived on a road parallel with Eccleshall Road for the last four months, and in that time there have been approximately four building projects within one building's distance of me. I started off taking it with a grain of salt, but now one of the projects - presumably a new restaurant on Eccy Road - is taking deliveries at 3-4 o'clock in the morning. The rear access area is literally outside my window, so I have articulated lorries humming away (not to mention the clashing and banging of things going in and out) at all hours.

Is there anything I can do to get a solid nights sleep, i.e. stop all these sodding builders and deliveries? Please help Sheff Forum, Insomniacal in Eccleshall.

You can either. . kill the delivery drivers, burn the new buildings and spread nuclear waste on the ashes to make sure they never return. .

. . or you could ofcourse just move. . just a though!

Phone the councill, I am sure there will be rules on what times they can start their work in a residential area..

Complain about it - and make sure the people who own the business know you are complaining. They are not allowed to do this. I know people who had trouble with Champs chucking out bottles after midnight, the noise was horrendous. AFAIK they had an enforcement order put on so that this could only be done during daylight hours. Presume you are in rented accommodation as you should have had a planning consultation if a service access was by your windows!

Unless they have special permits they can't make that much noise between something like 11.30pm and 8am I think. Ring the environment agency or whoever deals with noise.

You've been there four months, and you still can't spell Ecclesall?

this sounds like a serious nuisance - the town hall's environmental health dept have people who deal with this. You have a legal and statutory right to what is defined as 'quiet enjoyment' of your home. That includes having the window open. Length of time of residency is not a factor.

Start a diary. I HATE noise - you have my sympathy. Idiots in cars deliberately putiing noisy exhausts, motor bikes esp harley noisy rattling crap engineered U.S.A. junkbikes, boy racers with boom boxes in the boot etc.

I am desparate to get away from middlewood road with the supertram honking and the steady stream of ambulances and paramedics coming from just up the road.

rant rant rant!!

Try contacting the planning department as on quite a few planning applications there are conditions that cover the permitted working hours. Also, if the noise relates to bars / restaurants, etc then there may be conditions that cover their operations.

the times they can operate building sites in areas where people live are mon - fri 8am - 6pm sat 8am - 1pm and nothing on sundays or bank hols without prior consent from the council.

I had harrisson construction fined last year for repeated problems they caused in the kelham island area. contact the council and keep a diary as evidence.
