Because they're little works of art that I can wear on my feet :D .

I can choose a skein or two of pure, soft, merino wool from an array of gorgeous single or variegated colours and turn it into something unique.

It's creative and challenging, and the end result is infinitely better than anything you can buy at M&S.

Do you want lessons? There's an excellent series of tutorial posts in this (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=99738) thread... :D

I can't darn though.

Because some people who enjoy knitting but are slightly impatient, and knitting a pair of socks can be done in a couple of days rather than a jumper that takes a couple of months..

Also a pair of knitted socks will last a lot longer than a pair which cost three quid!

That's quite right. It was a bit of fun really. :hihi:

You could ask me the same question "Why bother growing carrots when they are only 25p a LB?, but I do. :loopy:

Well stay around, CherryNicole; I'm sure we'll be able to teach you :) .

Have a look in the Links (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=98114) section at the knitters' blogs (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showpost.php?p=1076971&postcount=2) - some of the stuff they're knitting is glorious. How can you possibly resist? :D .

I knit socks because I can ensure a totally perfect fit, because they will be unique, because I can use a luxury yarn that I wouldn't be able to afford for a full sized garment, because it's a historical skill that I want to carry on and just because I can!

If you had worn a pair of hand knitted socks you wouldn't have asked the question! Knit up a pair and try them and you'll be sooooooo glad you did!
