following a discussion at work (things often get random on a wednesday) we want to know if vegetarian channel swimmers use animal fat as thier protective grease or if they have a veggie lard to use?

This is funny! But you can get Vegetable suet so presumably.... they might even use hydrogenated coconut oil.

Wonder if there'll ever be a demand one day for unvaccinated vegetarian (or vegan) blood donors? :hihi:

Why wouldn’t they just use trex?

'Cos Trex is laaaaaaaaard, unless I'm very much mistaken, and that comes from creatures.

why do you need to be lubed to swim the channel?

Some sort of coating on the skin helps to prevent hypothermia.

Aha, cgk, you enlighten me futher!

*pops on coat to go to shops and purchase some trex....

If by 'creatures' you mean vegetables you would be right.

It prevents a certain type of jellyfish from stinging your body. There’s a lot of them about in the “Veggie Channel!” Former true, latter joke at Poster’s expense.

Capt. Webb used a box of matches.

The goose grease was to help the swimmer maintain their body temperature as they have to spend around 15 hours in the cold sea.

Apparently they use good old Vaseline now - vegetarians' problem solved

I think they split up after Marc Bolan's last hit,
"Wrap a yellow mini round an old oak tree"

Not just a problem solver for "channel" swimmers either. :P

*covers up innocent ears* I'm still amazed at the number of different topics that people can make so ruuude now! :D

Aye, but they were his only means of striking out to get to the other side. On the other hand, he might have fancied a smoke at the half-way stage.

It’s been achieved in a lot less time than 15 hours. Take your point about the body temperature though. Had to interview a channel swimmer many years ago, and he told me it protected him against jellyfish stings. There was a huge amount of ’em in the Channel that particular year. Think his name was Brian something-or-other. Can’t remember now, I’m getting old. Big lad in his late teens, did it, I think, in around 11 hours.

Well what did your fellow workers make of our "sensible" answers

they were thrilled to know that they can swim the channel without worrying about their vegetarian sensibilities!
well, perhaps not that thrilled but they did think it was very funny not only that I actually asked but that so many people bothered to answer...now I know where to come with any other random questions we might have!
