But you can get Vegetable suet so presumably.... they might even use hydrogenated coconut oil. Wonder if there'll ever be a demand one day for unvaccinated vegetarian (or vegan) blood donors? :hihi: joeyannie 17-05-2006, 14:42 Where is the vegetarian channel? ;) sorry...shouldve been more clear...its the swimmers who are veggie, not the channel!:D  plekhanov 17-05-2006, 14:57 Why wouldn’t they just use trex? lizzmobile 17-05-2006, 14:58 'Cos Trex is laaaaaaaaard, unless I'm very much mistaken, and that comes from creatures. cgksheff 17-05-2006, 15:01 'Cos Trex is laaaaaaaaard, unless I'm very much mistaken, and that comes from creatures. If by 'creatures' you mean vegetables you would be right. peterw 17-05-2006, 16:30 why do you need to be lubed to swim the channel? It prevents a certain type of jellyfish from stinging your body. There’s a lot of them about in the “Veggie Channel!” Former true, latter joke at Poster’s expense. shoeshine 17-05-2006, 16:34 It prevents a certain type of jellyfish from stinging your body. The goose grease was to help the swimmer maintain their body temperature as they have to spend around 15 hours in the cold sea. Apparently they use good old Vaseline now - vegetarians' problem solved  Don_Kiddick 17-05-2006, 17:31 Why wouldn’t they just use trex? I think they split up after Marc Bolan's last hit, "Wrap a yellow mini round an old oak tree" :o owdlad 17-05-2006, 19:34 The goose grease was to help the swimmer maintain their body temperature as they have to spend around 15 hours in the cold sea. Webb used a box of matches. Aye, but they were his only means of striking out to get to the other side. On the other hand, he might have fancied a smoke at the half-way stage. peterw 18-05-2006, 00:17 The goose grease was to help the swimmer maintain their body temperature as they have to spend around 15 hours in the cold sea. Apparently they use good old Vaseline now - vegetarians' problem solved  It’s been achieved in a lot less time than 15 hours. Take your point about the body temperature though. Had to interview a channel swimmer many years ago, and he told me it protected him against jellyfish stings. There was a huge amount of ’em in the Channel that particular year. Think his name was Brian something-or-other. Can’t remember now, I’m getting old. Big lad in his late teens, did it, I think, in around 11 hours. joeyannie 18-05-2006, 07:05 thank you all! I shall enlighten the rest of my work mates as soon as they show up! owdlad 18-05-2006, 08:34 Well what did your fellow workers make of our "sensible" answers  joeyannie 18-05-2006, 12:34 they were thrilled to know that they can swim the channel without worrying about their vegetarian sensibilities! well, perhaps not that thrilled but they did think it was very funny not only that I actually asked but that so many people bothered to answer...now I know where to come with any other random questions we might have! |
