Hi

This is my first post, so hello to everyone.

I hope you can help us out. I am originally from Sheffield, but currently living in Ireland with my partner, 2 ½ year old son and with another baby on the way due in August.

I’ll try and make this short. Towards the end of the summer, we’re looking to sell our house here and move back home, maybe North Sheffield/Barnsley. I haven’t actually lived in Sheffield for 10/11 years now, but we do get to go home a couple of times each year. Basically, because it’s been so long, what is it actually like now? What is it like to live there? We live way out in the country where we are and it’s quite remote from most things, so we’re looking forward to having ‘things to do’ and places to go. What are the costs of living like? What about employment opportunities? (my partner’s an architect) What about child care / schools? Local facilities and places to go?

I know this is all so vague, but we just want to get a picture of what we could be looking at when we do get home. Even if you know of any websites that would be a great help too.

Thanks,

nothing much really changes except one way systems and the odd new building ! i suspect things will be much the same as when you left really, except you might feel the need to have Sat Nav' as the city centre roads may differ from when you were last here. the people will be the same just as lovable as when you left we are ! the cost of living will be what you choose as we have the cheepest i.e Netto and Aldi or the dearer Waiterse ,Tesco Somerfield etc .
you need to choose schools early as many are already over subscribed and have waiting lists it all depends where you move to and whether is secondary or primary schools you are after. there are so many things to do in sheffield i hope you love it when you come back, i'm sure you will slot back right in ,soon it will feel like you never left and Ireland will be a memory , like Sheffield is to you now
best of luck , i hope this has helped.

Well you've come to the right place!!

Have a browse about these pages, as your question has been answered many times over

If there are areas you are particularly interested in, use the search facility to read up on any 'incidents' that may be happening in that area, or for advice given to others about facilities/policing/teenagers/schools there

Thanks both of you, Lacey, you must know how I feel over here!! I can't wait to get home, but it's still a bit nerve wracking. It will be the best thing we ever did, I know it will. In fact, the For Sale sign should be up sometime this week, we just thought, DO IT NOW!!! I always enjoy reading posts on this site, so I'll keep my eye open for more things related to what we're after.
