Any one on here used to frequent the above drinking hostiliries?

I worked at them both Colley in 1995-1996 and Southey for a brief spell in 1996.

Colley was sound except for the commitee men who were absolute nobs. I got the sack cos one of them overheard me saying to a mate id get him a drink cos he was skint.

Southey wasn't a place for the faint hearted either and woe be tied anybody who sat on one of the regulars tables.

The funniest thing about these is the 'turns' that appear who think they are proper rock stars LOL.

Serious injustice that was, if Id have been a bit older and wiser I wouldn't have taken it lying down either. The steward and stewardess at the time didn't want me sacked. Just the commitee men on a power trip. Sad barstewards.

I remember that the committee men at the Colley club were always on the fiddle and every so often the social would come and nail them :)

Thought they were sommat clever but were really just a bunch of total prats.

Yeah some commitee men at working mens clubs are a bit of a cult.

The ones at Colley were something very similar.....

I went on my first sharrer bang (spelling) to Skeggy from the Southey WMC in about 1936 or so,there was a kids playing room on the right as you went through the front door passed the snooker table,it overlooked what was then just fields. Although if memory serves there was a row of cottages in full view. I was stood at Southey green terminus one day when the Brownshirts marched by not knowing of course their significance at that time.

I was last in the Colley club in the early 80s, and I never went back in for various reasons, but the committee men were well known all over the city for being a bunch of toss-pots.
