I've heard a bit of a rumour about a wooden dog or animal or something in Hillsborough Park that was built by blind or disabled children or something. I'm not actually going to be in Hillsborough until tomorrow so I was just wondering if anybody could shed some light on it?

I don't suppose it will run away,or as I live over the park wall why don't we negotiate a fee and I will photograph it for you ?Or something.

We're off to the library after school tomorrow so we'll take a look. There is already a lovely dragon and a snake so anymore animals would be brilliant.

as I say, I think we are going tomorrow, so will have a look then. But where did the other animals appear from? Were they made by the same people do you know?
thanks!

It's a shame about the snake... It winds round the area just above the playground with a mouth pointing towards hillsborough (SWFC). It's formed as a long mound (must be more than 100yds) but the kids wont keep off even although it's clearly signposted, so the grass is not 'taking' - the turf is coming off in lumps. I have asked loads to keep off, usually by asking them what their reading age is. When met with curious stares I point to the notices. Most are pretty good and clear off, but the damage means that the area can't be brought into use.

I haven't seen the wooden dog though.

There is no supervision in the park so it's subject to a lot of abuse. Probably costing more than employing someone to look after the park.

I take my daughter there and generally spend the time picking up litter whilst she swings 'for ever'. It's amazing the improvement when the rubbish is picked up and put in bins, and it doesn't take a lot of energy. If litter is in the way, it's a good idea to pick it up as you go along - unless it's sticky....

Haven't seen the dog but have seen the huge wooden snake, agree it is a shame it keeps getting abused only the other evening on the way to work a group of teenagers were pulling up the turf, why can't they bring back park keeperes or lock the park after dark. Usuallly in a morning if i take my youngest son i seem to spend forever picking up broken glass and beer cans off the slides and climbing frame, why do these people insist on trying to destroy and spoil everything that is there for everyones enjoyment?

Forum user NicholasB is the Sheffield City Council's Park Ranger for Hillsborough. If anyone has any complaints maybe they should PM him.

I worked for the Ranger service some years ago and Hillsboro' park was a bit of an anomaly as no one Ranger team in the city had responsibility for it.

Since then the Hillsboro' community trust has aquired some money and doing so aquired NicholasB as its community Ranger.
