View Full Version : How can anyone justify that for a cuppa?
the_rudeboy 16-05-2006, 11:17 On Saturday we stopped off at the Moto services at Tamworth. I was totally gobsmacked when I saw that they had the nerve to charge £1.89 for a mug of tea. To top it off you had to do it yourself, it wasn't even made for you.
This really is taking the mick and surely cannot be justified?
*Twinkle* 16-05-2006, 11:19 You sound just like my Dad :hihi:
Did you do the Yorkshire War Cry hun? :P
Nah, I agree, its scandelous for a teabag that costs pennies...
Don_Kiddick 16-05-2006, 11:19 I would have chucked it in someones face like they do at concerts with plastic glasses of £5 lager. :D
the_rudeboy 16-05-2006, 11:23 I would have chucked it in someones face like they do at concerts with plastic glasses of £5 lager. :D We turned around and walked out.......and spent our money in the (not quite as overpriced) M & S shop there.
*Twinkle* 16-05-2006, 11:33 You may or may not be aware that these places are all owned by one big company... The company I'm referring to own all the cafes/pubs/shops in the railway stations/airports and in places like the Moto service station... So you may think that taking your business elsewhere has stopped the greedy fat cats from getting your money, but the branch of M and S where you spent your pennies belongs to them too!
Having worked for such company, I can tell you now that the cup of tea advertised at £1.89 costs the company 4 pence to make... Yes, thats £0.04! :o ...and then they win again as its self-service so they don't have to pay anyone to grunt at you and make it!
drolnhoj 16-05-2006, 11:37 We turned around and walked out.......and spent our money in the (not quite as overpriced) M & S shop there.
The wonderful thing about this country of ours is that we do have freedom of choice, and you quite rightly exercised yours, but at the end of the day it is all about supply and demand. If somebody really wants a cup of tea at Tamworth Moto, they will pay £1.89.
It's a Motorway service station, and you expect Gold plated service?! PMSL!
Also, everyone knows Motorway services charge way over the odds for drinks and food, but their target audience are usually so glad of a drink and some grub, they don't care.
Zinger549 16-05-2006, 11:39 That like Costa and Starbucks coffee £1.90 for s a small coffee with milk. Yet I can get a large coffee for £1.40 at my local coffee shop
the_rudeboy 16-05-2006, 11:40 It's a Motorway service station, and you expect Gold plated service?! PMSL!
A reasonably priced cup o' tea would be nice for starters. :|
Take a flask then you cheapskate...

Its true, infact you'll be surprised how many people do pay that much for something that costs 4 pence :loopy:
...and if I personally received £1.89 for every cup of tea I made when I worked in the cafe, I'd have been a millionnaire by now!
Don_Kiddick 16-05-2006, 11:44 Take a flask then you cheapskate...
He did - it had his stash inside tho :hihi:
the_rudeboy 16-05-2006, 11:44 Take a flask then you cheapskate... You reckon nearly £2 for a brew is reasonable then?
Yeh, I've paid more than that in bloody TJ Hughes in Town never mind a Motorway services on the M1 or wherever.
Zinger549 16-05-2006, 11:46 You reckon nearly £2 for a brew is reasonable then?
Nope Romford market £1:30 for a cup of tea and a bacon roll now thats value :hihi:
the_rudeboy 16-05-2006, 11:47 Yeh, I've paid more than that in bloody TJ Hughes in Town never mind a Motorway services on the M1 or wherever. Now you're just being silly.
Don_Kiddick 16-05-2006, 11:48 Yeh, I've paid more than that in bloody TJ Hughes in Town never mind a Motorway services on the M1 or wherever.
It must be that "I am a fool with money" T-shirt you wear Rich :hihi:

Over £2 for a cuppa you must be joking
Well to be fair it was a Cappucino... But even then £2.25 for it is daylight robbery IMO.
You have to take into account that the cost of the cuppa isn't just the ingredients, thats why it's expensive.
the_rudeboy 16-05-2006, 12:07 You have to take into account that the cost of the cuppa isn't just the ingredients, thats why it's expensive. Like what when you even have to make it yourself?
Like what when you even have to make it yourself?
you took your own water, electricity, kettle, cup and building to make it in, you also mopped the floor and tidied up as you left ?
*Twinkle* 16-05-2006, 12:10 Yup, theres the cost of the paper cup (Can be eliminated by using proper cups) the lid, the sleeve, the stirrer, sugar sachets, napkins, till roll...
Still doesnt ammount to £1.89 though!
Don_Kiddick 16-05-2006, 12:12 you took your own water, electricity, kettle, cup and building to make it in, you also mopped the floor and tidied up as you left ?
Ayup nick - steady lad; we're proper blokes n don't even do that at home tha knows  :hihi:
Internetowl 16-05-2006, 12:15 Well to be fair it was a Cappucino... But even then £2.25 for it is daylight robbery IMO.
It wasn't a cup of TEA then was it, splasher?
the_rudeboy 16-05-2006, 12:16 you took your own water, electricity, kettle, cup and building to make it in, you also mopped the floor and tidied up as you left ? Taking into account the cost of the water, the heating of the water, the collecting of trays, the cleaning of the mug and the maintenace of the building etc I still don't feel that £1.89 is a reasonable cost. If you do, then more fool you my friend. :)
RazorSHarp 16-05-2006, 12:16 I went into the one near Leciester a few weeks ago, we had two cups of coffee and a danish each £11.80 !!!!
I was going to have a packet of crisps aswell but at 80p the overdraft jsut would cope with it.
It's a monopoly gone mad but considering the build costs of constructing these things, I believe the on/off ramps cost millions, the prices have to be high to recoupe the investment.
Best advice is to always take your snap with you and use these places to stretch your legs and take a comfort break, that usually comes for free

It is extortionate, should have left and gone to the Green man literally a mile or two away near to sutton I think  lovely quaint pub, nice food :P alright beer ;)

I guess when one's desperate for something hot & wet inside, one will pay anything
You could always just stop at one of those scabby old caravans in the laybys, I bet they do a cheap cup of tea.
StarSparkle 16-05-2006, 12:26 The first time I visited a motorway service station was on an overnight coach journey. We pulled into this service station in the middle of the night - I couldn't believe my eyes - all these people queuing up for fried food and beans at 3 o'clock in the morning! :gag: I had a job steadying my stomach.
Then I caught a glimpse of the menu and price-list - after I'd picked myself up off the floor where I'd collapsed in shock, I decided to look elsewhere for sustenance! But I think in the end I was forced to pay a highly-inflated price for a simple sandwich and a cup of tea.
They really have got the market sewn up though - it must be a licence to print money.
StarSparkle
SpiderPete 16-05-2006, 12:28 We usually stop either at Watford gap one or the one at Worcester, and the sandwiches are even more of a shock, won`t get one under 3.50, and 4 of us went a few weeks ago, for sandwiches and drink, and came to over £24. :o :o :o
I guess when one's desperate for something hot & wet inside, one will pay anything
And that's exactly the point I was trying to make, but old tightwad the_rudeboy wouldn't take teh hint...
Honestly even my mate Craig isn't THAT much of a cheapskate, and he doesn't even NEED to be a cheapskate cos he gets most of his day to day costs back on his expenses at work.
Dj_Shadowman 16-05-2006, 12:37 You could always just stop at one of those scabby old caravans in the laybys, I bet they do a cheap cup of tea.
Most of them do a decent fry up as well

I'm sorry Rich, but shurup :P your getting on my tits, so I bet you are the_rudeboys, these prices are extortionate, however you look at it, the companies are making a lot of money off you and it is a bit unfair.
Most of them do a decent fry up as well
Barf !
I couldn't eat at one, they don't even have running water, where does the "chef" wash his hands after hes been to the loo (if there is a loo) ?
Don_Kiddick 16-05-2006, 12:45 Barf !

Nowt wrong with the odd pube in your beans, consider it free organic dental floss :D

:gag: I'm glad your not in the catering business
Don_Kiddick 16-05-2006, 12:54 I am kinda... I'm feeding you lot all this twaddle to keep the corners of your mouths turned up :)

Every one I have ever been to has running water and a bog, I think you will find thats the law....
Every one I have ever been to has running water and a bog, I think you will find thats the law....
How do they get running water in a layby at the side of the motorway ?
Anyway, you'll not convince me they are safe places to eat.

They carry their own water supply and its pumped in.
I have never eaten anything dodgy in one and I have been in loads of them over the years.
Mind you, after 10 years of the first wifes cooking im probably immune :hihi:
I wouldn't pay 1.89 for a cup of tea. I once went to the one in Leicester too. (That big service station with a walk-way across the top to the other side, enroute to London.)
Even the normal Burger King charged a lot more than their high st ones. I was thinking, "no way am I paying that much for a tea". So I didn't. Maybe I shouldn't gone for the meal deals instead.
It's not like it's quality tea. You know it too. I wouldn't mind paying 1.50 for a coffee cos it's quality beans.
It's not about being a cheapskate, it's knowing the price of things. If you get a drink from the shops, or water. It's cheaper, and I rather pay that price for it.
crookesey 16-05-2006, 13:18 You sound just like my Dad :hihi:
Did you do the Yorkshire War Cry hun? :P
Nah, I agree, its scandelous for a teabag that costs pennies...
Listen you, your Dad and I can remember when you could get a detached house for £1.89 less of the cheek.
Oh those were the days when bobbins of cotton were threepence a loaf.
the_rudeboy 16-05-2006, 14:21 And that's exactly the point I was trying to make, but old tightwad the_rudeboy wouldn't take teh hint... :rolleyes If you're happy paying those prices for a brew then thats fine by me..................probably why you can't afford real burberry. ;)
Jimbob1989 16-05-2006, 15:36 If you're happy paying those prices for a brew then thats fine by me..................probably why you can't afford real burberry. ;)
PMSL :hihi: harsh but fair :P
crookesey 17-05-2006, 10:58 Can do better than that, I was just booking flights to Spain when I noticed that meals were included. However if meals are not required there is a £12.00 per person discount. When was a grotti inflight meal ever worth £12.00?
lizzmobile 17-05-2006, 11:06 I have had the same quote; £12 for a pile of crap. Disgusting unimaginative crap at that. If I was flying Thai airways then it might be a bit easier to swallow (hihi) but it's sheer robbery.
We're saving £48 by buying our meals from the supermarket before we fly.
It must be that "I am a fool" T-shirt you wear Rich :hihi:
:P
You could always just stop at one of those scabby old caravans in the laybys, I bet they do a cheap cup of tea.
There are no lay-bys on Motorways though. So (if your foolish enough) you have to pay the prices the SS (Service Stations) demand.

Did you do the Yorkshire War Cry hun? :P

Lol that is exactly what my dad would say too! '£1.89 for a cup of tea?! You must be joking, I'd rather die of thirst' - My father is so generous.
The last time my mum drove me up to Sheffield we secretly went for tea and a cake at the services just to get my Dad back for depriving us all those years :hihi:
When I was a kid we were never allowed to go to a Little Chef because they were commiting "daylight robbery", I now know I didn't miss anything.
funkymiss 17-05-2006, 11:28 Yeah for some reason my brother always wanted to go to Little Chef but we were never allowed either.
Does Little Chef still exist?
Does Little Chef still exist?
Oh yeah, there are loads of them.
funkymiss 17-05-2006, 11:30 What about Wimpy?
What about Wimpy?
I don't think so, there used to be on on the way to Bridlington, but it's shut down now :(, there was one in Hillsborough too I think. Wimpy was so British, you got a knife and fork with your burger :)
funkymiss 17-05-2006, 11:46 Did you really?! Lol. My Dad used to say that he took his first girlfriend to Wimpy on a date. Now he reckons he just 'met her outside'. Yeah right.
My poor Dad isn't being shown up well here is he?!
craigmason 17-05-2006, 12:00 what you want is a travel kettle then when you visit a services you have no need to visit their cafe for a brew
sheff_minx 17-05-2006, 12:06 What about Wimpy?
There's a Wimpy in a few service stations down the M1... Northampton services I think has one.
craigmason 17-05-2006, 12:10 http://www.wimpyburgers.co.uk/site/flash.htm
Zinger549 17-05-2006, 12:10 What about Wimpy?
Yes there is one in lakeside shopping centre and they have them in roadchef (http://www.roadchef.com/) motorway services
http://www.wimpyburgers.co.uk/site/enjoy_wimpy/
The excuse for overcharging that the Motorway services churn out is that as part of their licencing they have to be open 24 hours a day with all the resultant overheads cost.
I used to travel with a coach holiday company called Yorkshire Tours. You were asked to bring a mug with you and they'd park up every now and again and get a calor gas bottle and plate out to do a brew up!!
livestrong 17-05-2006, 13:10 they only charge the prices people are prepared to pay... basic ecomonics really... if no one bought it then the prices would fall...
Being a true Yorkshireman I have a map of Morrisons stores nationwide and if not too far from the motorway go there. I don't like motorway driving anymore though, too many idiot tailgaters.
I have had the same quote; £12 for a pile of crap. Disgusting unimaginative crap at that. If I was flying Thai airways then it might be a bit easier to swallow (hihi) but it's sheer robbery.

read the back of your ticket.
It says: "only food bought on the plane is to be eaten on board"
But they might allow it if you pay the food equivalent of corkage..plateage????

Yep they won't allow you to have it
TrashyBook 17-05-2006, 18:51 ...if not too far from the motorway go there...
This is a useful site:
http://www.5minutesaway.co.uk/
It lists facilities within a 5 minute drive of motorway junctions, so you can avoid having to pay extortionate prices.
Mind you, I'd quite like to visit Tebay Services on the M6. They're privately owned, and were voted the best in the country recently:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2006/03/07/nmway07.xml&sSheet=/news/2006/03/07/ixnewstop.html
Don_Kiddick 17-05-2006, 19:07 If you're happy paying those prices for a brew then thats fine by me..................probably why you can't afford real blueberry. ;)
Isn't that one of them fancy herbal teas that poncey art school students seem to drink? :hihi:
And I hear you can find them in your muffin these days :o
Yep they won't allow you to have it
What ? Which airline ? I've never had this problem before.
I've never checked the back of the ticket, so I didn't know such rule exist, but the way I see it is that, you control your own eating time, and not dictated by anyone else. So I normally pack small snacks or muesli bars and water whever I go. What if you're a diabetic ?
Isn't that one of them fancy herbal teas that poncey art school students seem to drink? :hihi:
And I hear you can find them in your muffin these days :o
I drink those. They're not poncey. They're quite nice actually. It goes nicely with blueberry muffins. I do like my muffins, thank you very much. ;)
(Actually, should I be saying that? *ahem*)
