According to Demos, the latest figure is

513,234

If you go to their website www.demos.co.uk and click on the creativity index, it shows a league table for population, creativity, sexual diversity and patent applications.

Sadly, Sheffield failed to make the top ten in all areas.

It certainly is when Shefield was the manufacturing capital of the world at one time.

That sounds interesting, wonder how they determine the figures for that?

Sounds like a nice PC word to me...

I presume it is still rising! although the population of every city fluctuates all the time.

personally i consider sheffield being low down in the sexual diversity league a good thing, but im probably gonna get killed for saying that 8)

19th on the sexual diversity table, we must be pretty boring in Sheffield.

Although I have a friend who works as a HIV counsellor and the figures are rising fast.

Just off too bed on my own, doh

Yes, I also wonder how you scientifically quantify 'sexual diversity'. Presumably hordes of greybeards have pondered this question and come up with a handy battery powered 'sexualdiversityometer' to determine the exact degree of sexual diversity there is.

"Hmm Perri 6, The thingummy is showing a reading of nine point eight nortons over three point two seven toksvig units"
"Give me that you idiot, we're on Just a Minute"

Yep, especially considering the kind of posts you've made in the past. It's backwards looking people like yourself that is holding this city back and making places like Manchester a more desirable and prosperous place.

I wouldnt say Manchester was more desirable just cos it has more gays, lesbians and miscellaneous people living there.
(miscellaneous = transexuals, transvestites, dominatrices, voyeurists, masochists, sadists, men who dress as babies etc. - well thats i imagine as sexual diversity anyway)

There are less gays in Sheffield than Manchester... therefore, Manchester is more prosperous and desirable. Hmmm. Are you SURE theres a link here? Afterall, according to the list, places like Liverpool, Leicester and Birmingham, none of which surely more desirable/prosperous, are all more "sexually diverse" than Sheffield. I don't think you've done your RESEARCH here. Could you for example PROVIDE EVIDENCE that gay people make a city richer, or earn more, or make people want to live alongside them? Its "forwards thinking" people like you that increase drugs use, teen pregnancies, divorce, IMHO. Also, bear in mind that the whole point of the messageboard is for opinions, and disagreeing with someone elses does NOT give you the right to think you're superior.

I am not making a link between homosexuals and their making cities a more prosperous place.

I've noticed that all the posts you've made have caused arguments because of your negative comments. If you are a typical Sheffielder then perhaps that is why people and businesses look elswehere before moving and investing here.

ALL posts? Lets not distort the truth. At least I'm not like some on here that just diplomatically agree with everything and anything others say. The whole point of a forum is to express opinions and that is what I do. If people don't like my opinions, they "argue" them and debate them and thats fine, everyones allowed their own opinion and it makes for an interesting thread.

dont forget, an argument can easily turn into a flame war from one stupid comment, and if this thread does i will lock it.

If the 547,000 figure on the council website is still current it appears that Sheffield's population has increased by nearly 10% since 2003.

If the 547,000 figure on the council website is still current it appears that Sheffield's population has increased by nearly 10% since 2003.

If the 547,000 figure is correct the population has gone up by just over 5% (6.3% to be accurate) and it's closer to 10 years as the 513,234 figure is from the 2001 census.

The 513,234 figure was a fall from 10 years earlier when the population stood at 528,708 so in the last 20 years the population has only increased by just above 3%.
