View Full Version : Would anyone be interested in an SF Gardening / Allotment group?
There's recently been quite a lot of gardening and allotment type threads on the forum, so I wondering how many people would be interested in a forum group for gardeners? Actually, it's something I've already emailed Geoff about but I still think it would be good to have an idea of how many people would use such a group! :D Broadly speaking I imagine it would have two main sections - one for edible plants and another for non edible plants. Hopefully it would act as a place where we can share tips and seek advice, etc :)
Any takers? :D
Yes, I'd be interested. My garden is slowly reverting back to a wilderness, so I could do with a place to get advice and ideas about how to keep it under control. I was thinking about turning a bit of the garden into a vege area, so I could do with some advice about that too.
Excellent idea :) .
neeeeeeeeeek 15-05-2006, 08:05 I don't have an allotment but do have a garden which is very very slowly taking shape. I shall also be growning some edible plants, errrrr, mostly Tomatoes it seems but also some beans and stuff.
Count me in.
:D
I think it's an excellent Idea Tracie.
Wow, that was quick! :D I don't have an allotment either but I do have a dedicated veggie patch at the bottom of the garden with some lettuces, garlic, carrots and potatoes :) I'm completely new to gardening though!
Don_Kiddick 15-05-2006, 09:08  Yayy! Brill idea!
I did C&G Horticulture for 3 years while still in the 6th form.
I love my garden me I do!

neeeeeeeeeek 15-05-2006, 09:14 I also need some pepper plants if anyone has some.. Swap for some Tomato plants!!
My first lot of pepper seeds failed to do anything so I've planted some more - I'll let you know if they get anywhere! ;)
Don_Kiddick 15-05-2006, 09:33 I've got a barrowload of runner bean seeds going if anyone wants some.
Overdid the dry n keep thing last back end.
They need to go straight in the ground around now. Don't be messing around with growing in pots ;)
Internetowl 15-05-2006, 13:05 I'm interested in the group. As for the beans Kiddick, they're going to be late if you've not got them going already. Mine are currently a couple of feet high and beginning to flower :)
My peppers failed to show as well. Toms are flying too as are the peas which seem to be taking over 1/2 the garden :)
Yes, I wouldn't mind advice on my garden too. On how to maintain it, and when to cut my hedges. I've not even managed to grow things yet. So many things to learn.
I'd be interested as I'd like different advice on sorting our garden out if possible.
And my lawn... grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
I'm up for it
I'm off veg this year - I'm getting things looking presentable, and investigating whether I need permission to erect the greenhouse I bought for half price in B&Q when I should have been buying loft boards
Can we have meet-ups and plant swaps?
Internetowl 18-05-2006, 15:57 I shouldn't think you'd need planning permission if its a normal sized greenhouse, if its a mini Botanical Gardens Reptile House then perhaps so?
Concrete based not attached to your house it should be covered as would a normal shed.
Not with the covenants attached to this specific property :(
I use a large terra cotta strawberry pot for planting different herbs, i keep it on my back deck close to the kitchen, just snip off what i want, it's also easy to turn around giving them all a bit of sun.
craigmason 21-05-2006, 15:26 can i join it :?:
Plain Talker 22-05-2006, 00:13 If anyone is interested, I have a garden that is in desperate need of the lawn striming/ mowing, and a pyrocanthus(cantha?) hedge that's poking through my fence from next door, that needs a bit of a clip back, and I can't do it myself.
Could two or there interested parties help? I'd pay someone. I'd not be able to pay youse much, but if you want, I'd cook a nice stew or something (either veggie and/or meat) as a thank you, and supply copious amounts of tea/ coffee.
anyone? please?

sTaGeWaLkEr 22-05-2006, 00:28 Great idea, Tracie :)
The grounds at Stagewalker Mansions need extensive maintenance, and as such, input is always appreciated!
For example, I planted some magic beans a few weeks ago now and nothing has happened, what should I do? Am I entitled to my money back under the Sale of goods act 1979?
Please help
Stagey x
I believe you'd be entitled to the cow you purchased them with in the first place ;)

Do you have a mower, PT?

PT
PT, I'll supply the tools if someone on here wants to supply the labour...
Try as I might, I just can't mow lawns in stillies :hihi:
Genuine offer poppet! And no money to exchange hands, ok?
Stagey x
can i join it :?:
At the moment it's only a proposed group, but if Geoff gives it the go ahead then anyone who is interested would be welcome! :D
PlainTalker - If Stagey can supply tools and Andy is willing to lend a hand I'd also be willing to help get your garden back in order.
We'll need some better weather though :(
And no money to exchange hands, ok?
What Stagey said :)
PlainTalker - If Stagey can supply tools and Andy is willing to lend a hand I'd also be willing to help get your garden back in order.
I'd be more than happy to help with PT's garden - the one thing I miss, living in a flat, is having a garden. But unfortunatly, I don't have any tools. So if PT or someone can supply them I'm willing to mow the grass, tidy the plants etc.
And, as Stagewalker said, no money will change hands. You can pay me in coffee :)
Internetowl 22-05-2006, 13:12 get some window boxes, grow bags, big buckets. Better still kidnap PT's garden ;)
I can send PT a packet of seeds over:)

No problem, just let me know where and when :)
Mower, strimmer, electric shear type things and some nail varnish remover are all ready and waiting.
Not sure where the nail varnish remover comes into it, it just sounded nice. I needed something ladylike to redress the butch balance.
Ooh it'll be like ground force - who wants to be Charlie Dimmock's t*ts?
:o
love, Stagey xx
*vanessa* 24-05-2006, 14:40 Perhaps Ruby and her floating funbags could help:hihi:
I'd like to help, if I'm available too.

Thanks Vanessa :D Well, I'll have a look at the weather for next week and if the rain is going to ease up then we can try and sort out a day with PT, Stagey and Andy! I'm so fed up with the rain - I'm really behind with all the garden stuff at the moment :( By the way, just spotted your organic compost thread - what veggies are you planting out? *nosey* :P
On the plus side, I finally have some (very tiny) sweet pepper seedlings! Neeeeeeeeek - I'll let you know if any make it beyond the seedling stage and you'd be more than welcome to a few :)
*vanessa* 24-05-2006, 19:00 I have 1 pepper, some spring cabbage a cucumber plant which I bought from a car boot sale, I have some courgette and tomato plants which i got from a nice man on Freecycle and 2 french bean and a corgette plant that my nice neighbour gave me, plus I've got some salad and herbs to plant.
Next week might not be so good for me, its half term... unless you REALLY want my 4 kids to help:hihi: :hihi:

Oi Kiddick, I'm more 'Charlie Hammock' than Percy thrower.
My beans are flying, might have to pop the tops in the next few weeks if they continue at a pace. Flowering too. And my third batch of toms (from seed) are now big enough to pot on. Only real disappointment at this point is the carrots, very little shows so far.:(
Is the group a goer then Geoff?

Percy Thrower ? god, he must be 90 years old by now! too old to DIG his own grave:hihi:
Internetowl 25-05-2006, 15:14 I think's probably already dead, Kiddick's always been behind the times ;)
Plain Talker 25-05-2006, 15:16 nah, percy thrower shuffled off this mortal coil a good 15/20 yrs ago. must have been about '87/88 when he lay down his trowel...

So, are we getting a gardening group then?
stackmonkey 30-06-2006, 12:41 I'm up for it.
I'm gradually restoring my garden after the ravages of the previous owners' 3 large dogs. Putting in lots of herbs, fruit and plants to attract bees and butterflies.
waxonwaxoff 30-06-2006, 22:04 ooh id like to join a gardening group. I love learning from other people about gardening. Any ideas for gardening with children that dont know the meaning of the word careful would also be great. :)
pattricia 30-06-2006, 22:31 Id love a "Gardening Forum" within SF.There is a programme on Radio Sheffield called Flowerpot phone in, and its very interesting. The main reason I would like one,is to ask certain questions about flowers(I dont grow veg) Im sure there are more experienced members than me,who could answer my questions.

Choose plants with pointy bits - then they'll know 'careful' ;)
Anything that grows quickly usually captures the imagination with kids. And something with lots of colour. Try a packet of mixed sweet peas, and organise 'races' between the kids
This pack of sweet peas says it's supposed to take 14 days for them to germinate, but I planted some last wednesday, and I have 21 seedlings now :)
mr.blaze 04-07-2006, 13:00 Great idea! I love me plants I do!

as Strix said, plants with 'pointy bits' such as roses are good.
In my first house, I had a young mother and 2 year old son as lodger for a short while. Said son was not careful and had a habit of picking up indoor plants by the stem to pick off the leaves.:(
This soon stopped after he did it a couple of times with indoor roses.:D
Kids will also love colourful plants and those with identifiable smells, particularly for culinary herbs. ie of they know they'll be eating the plant at some point, you can persudae them it's in their interest to look after it.

or yukkas, or agaves
Oh, and kids love sunflowers, they nearly always grow perfectly without too much fannying about.

Blackcurrants are good. Strawberries are really difficult to kill off. Cherry tomatoes are quite rewarding, for older kids ;). Cut-and-come lettuce is great for growing on a window ledge and will recover after being plucked
Lavender is great for stroking as it smells great when you do, and is hardy
Good idea, I shall look forward to seeing it happen, will make good reading and may encourage people to grow their own.
AJ sheffield 04-07-2006, 23:12 I can supply the lights and timers
stackmonkey 05-07-2006, 12:30 Shrubby stuff is quite durable.
Got plenty of that..
Blackcurrants are good.
some of those...
Strawberries are really difficult to kill off.
some of these too..

and lots of this.
You need to pick an English variety to be sure of hardiness. some of the French types are a bit fragile.
czechroman 05-07-2006, 13:39 weve got straberries in our garden, really spreading as well, like our own straberry field, and they taste better than the shops too!, and best of all FREE!:hihi:
Allotment forum sounds grt, and normal grdening too, even landscaping.in fact, everything and anything to do with gardening would go down well. We have just aquired a huge allotment (563 sq metres) and it's not been touched for over 3 years, so you can imagine the challenge we have. However, we are thouroughly enjoying ourselves, and working hard......and of course getting grt suntans in the mean time, lol. So, lets get a notice board going for def.

Hi all
After reading a few posts on allotments, and they appear to be regaining popularity, would anyone be interested in a group on the Sheff forum for this?
Keri
it's a really good idea, Keri. I think that the idea of a gardening/allotment group has already been suggested to Geoff though.
I hope it'll appear soon, because my garden is in a horrible state and I'd really like some advice on growing veg.
Agent Orange 08-08-2006, 14:11 At first glance, I thought the title of the thread was 'Anyone Arrested in an Allotment Group'. No idea why?!
Hi Hecate
Yeah, I suggested it to Geoff, just wondered if there would be any interest. Let's hope!
Keri
Ginger_Kitty 08-08-2006, 14:17 I beleive Mod Tracie has suggested it as a group somewhere :) worth a search to see what other people thought
I was planning to hassle Tracie about that today, having spent all morning gardening :)
I'm here! Hi zweena :) Yep, I did suggest an SF Gardening / Allotment group to Geoff a little while ago too. There's a thread in GCC somewhere... I'll try and find it in a minute.
I don't have an allotment as such, but I do have a veggie patch / greenhouse in my garden. I think it would be a really popular group :D
thanks em - hey, like the pics, norfolk is the best place in the UK to be right now i guess! Ahh if only!
Ginger_Kitty 08-08-2006, 14:23 As far as i'm aware she officially suggested it a while ago... now we jsut have to wait for God... ahem... Geoff... to sort it out :D
Here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=111194&highlight=allotment) is the original thread, zweena. I'll merge this one into that in a short while to keep the discussions together.
Geoff likes the groups to have a 'local angle' - I think we could cover that with threads relating to the many allotments in Sheffield as well as local gardening resources; plus hints, tips, queries etc :)
thanks very much Tracie! I've suggested this all to Geoff so we'll just have to wait and see.
In the meantime, if anyone else is interested, get your name down!
I've merged the two threads now too
stackmonkey 08-08-2006, 14:39 yes, I'd like a gardening group please.
I'm off wild fruit picking tonight. :)
Ginger_Kitty 08-08-2006, 14:41 mee tooo :D
i don't have an allotment but i assist with my parent's one in doncaster, I've also jsut got my very own garden too :)
I doubt we'll be growing veg (mum allot is plenty) but flowers etc
I'm in :D
oo I'd be interested too :)
rothschild 08-08-2006, 21:55 Count me in as well please. We have a big garden which at times seems to have a mind of it's own. I have a little veggy plot which at the moment has sprouts (eaten by caterpillers!!).....as is the purple sprouting brocolli! The onions have had all their greenery eaten and haven't done very well. Beetroot which failed to do anything! Leeks are doing ok and the runners are doing great. I have had over 10lb off them and I only started picking last week. We also have strawberries which did well this year. Raspberries, gooseberries, blackberries and rhubarb. A plum tree which is looking near death but has some plums this year. Last year there were none and the year before I was drowning under a sea of viccies! Also a bramley apple and an eating variety which allways has scabby skins but lovely to eat when peeled.
Lots of shrubs but no borders. Lots of trees. Two ponds.......one of which is totally turned over to wildlife now.
I can't help "sowing and growing"......it's like an illness! lol. This year was particularly challenging as my greenhouse has been demolished and not yet replaced. I bought one of those little polytunnel things from Lidl and it has been a godsend. It is housing the toms and a couple of peppers at the moment. The sun room has also been a godsend for all the seedlings. I make hanging baskets and had about 15 sitting around on buckets waiting until they were big enough to go to their new homes. I also grew enough plants to fill about 27 tubs which sit on the front of the house and are looking very good right now.
So yeh.......you could say that I would be interested in a gardening group.
PS........I forgot to mention the huggins of bloomin weeds we grow! My excuse is that the wildlife thrive on them.......thats my story and I am sticking to it. lol.
pattricia 08-08-2006, 22:02 Count me in (Dont know wether Ive been counted in before) as this thread has been going some time.I actually think it would be a very interesting group to be in.I am very interested in gardening, and have a lot of questions I would like to ask.
stackmonkey 25-08-2006, 15:00 THanks to the mods/owners etc for the gardening group!
Yes good idea
I have allotment Bole Hills:P
Feeling a tad foolish yet - check the dates - see which group the thread is in. :hihi:
