Hiya guys and ladies!!

I've applied to live in The Forge in September and I'm just wondering what its like bad and positive things? If its a good experience? On there website it says that you have to pay extra to use the gym and the internet. Can anyone tell about how much it would be?

Look forward to everyones opinion!

Thanks people! :)

(come on people there must be more than one person who knows of someone living there or lived there themselves!!)

why was it hell?

The crime!
eg. Egg-ing of cars... Breaking of lifts.. Late night antics by rowdy students (read that as you wish :)), The total lack of security... Need I say more?

Hiya, only just seen the thread.

I live across the road from the forge, it looks nice and everything but when it was first built, my post kept going across to the forge because I've got a similar address so on the numerous occassions when i went across i saw there were some huge teething problems, students were kicking off about not being able to move in untill the first accomm chq was paid but they weren't getting their loans untill the week after.

It looked nice inside, but staff didn't seem to know where anything was or how to cope with problems that students we having!

Hopefully they've sorted it out now.

The staff are hopeless, rude, incompetent... My mate who lives there always has a barney with them because they do not give a damn!
The flats are pretty much trashed, even though they've only been in them since Sep 05... (I've only ever been in J block, 5th floor)
The lazy beggars leave rubbish bags everywhere so its always really smelly and the lift always smells like alcohol and sick :(
The carpets in the living area are very thin and half of the appliances have broken anyway! (Oh and if you get a fag burn in the sofa, they charge you for a new sofa, not just re-upholstering) :o

Access to the city centre is via subways, which I HATE walking through... well dodgy :(

The Forge is at the bottom of London Road isn't it ?

There is a subway, next to the Thia restaurant, but you can cross the road above ground too if you want too.

Its across from the BP garage, Bramall lane... (I'm talking about the other entrance, to J block, at the side) Bang next to the roundabout... You could always walk round, but find me a student that can be bothered to do that hehe

Ah, I see what you mean, the subway outside St Marys Church is a bit scarey, especially at night.

Student are having blocks like The Forge forced on them due the the draconian 2004 Housing Act that became law last month. Landlords owning student houses are being forced to register their properties (at great expense) with the local authority and conform to the Act.

This means having wash hand basins in all bedrooms (properties with over three tenants) What a good idea with all the electrical goods that most students have. They are being forced to fit more separate toilets irrespective of the amount of on-suits provided. Quite simply they are being forced out of business to force students into purpose built blocks.

Some posts admit that students leave rubbish all over the place in student blocks, if they do it in private lets the landlord can be fined. If a student is causing trouble, even away fron the student house the landlord can be held responsible and fined.

Sure there are some bad landlords, as there are some bad students but I bet you guys won't like being told to live in a student block when the private landlords decide to call it a day.

I live in J block. On appearance the forge is really nice and when i first moved in i was so excited. I even have a pink room! However, i have had a few problems whilst living here, such as door handles falling off, post box broken, problems with toilet, leaks through ceiling and mouse droppings! The problems i've had are really minor compared to what i have heard about other peoples flats. Like stars_gazing said, egging and rubbish is a problem in our block. My flatmate has had egg on her window for about 6 motnhs now and Unite have not bothered to clean it.

The staff are not really that helpful and they do not seem to know anything. The internet is a rip off at £250. It can be really slow, especially when unite make the mistake of letting evereybody use it when they havent paid!! I think the gym is about £50 not too sure.

The Forge is not good socially and if i could do first year all over again i would definitely live in uni halls!
One of the good things about living here is that i do feel safe. You need swipe cards to get in and there is cctv.

thank you for replyin!!!

this is making me think oh my god!!! what am i gettin into???

For such a high price i would of expected it to be high quality place and that i would have an better landlord than i did, when i lived in a house this year.

because there i had:
had hardly no heating, cold brown water, dodgey kitchen with microwave with rust inside it, a half finished bathroom etc etc.

And with student UNITE i thought i'd be getting something better, liveable and where i could meet new people because to be fair it was lonely living in a house.

Looks like i'm going to get the same crap but for more money lol

i've heard unite is a terrible landlord, they love to take your bond for the tiniest thing.

I had a shocking landlord in my second year, we arrived ready to move in to our house, and the house was FULL of rubbish! They hadn't even bother checking the house before giving us our keys! Put it this way, they didn't take our bond at the end of our tenancy!

Where i live across the road from the forge is cool, not highest of standard but the landlord is always around, we've got his mobile number for any problems, all bills included AND 30 quid cheaper than the forge.

We don't have swipe card security and cctv but i still feel safe with the huge front door that we've got.

Would stay here for my final year if it wasn't for the fact that my car keeps getting damaged from parking it in Sharrow flats. (some unknown jumped up on my roof the other week, wing mirror the week before, back window popped open after all that)

That's the only reason why i'm looking forward to moving

Another thing if you are living in the forge request to live in the main part of it and not outside it. You do feel somewhat cut off from everyone when you live in the blocks outside it.

i went to visit the forge yesterday and everything looked fine, even managed to see my allocated room and its fine!

most student accomodation is going to be the same, at least your guaranteed en-suite here!

its your home at the end of the day, its how you look after it. if you dont want rubbish bags outside your flat then dont leave it there

am mega excited to move in. cant wait for the parties
