View Full Version : The Star (how annoying)
i am not wanting to start a big thread where all wednesday fans start going on and on. Yet I have really had enough dont no whether this is true because i havent seen it for myself, but i here the star have brought out a wednesday supplement because of the great achievement of staying up this season (oh my god) called safe and sound i really hope this is just talk. It got me to thinking though and throughout the season i have noticed that all the time we were getting worse ratings than the owls in the star whether we won and they lost or so on it didnt mean a thing. Also they made it out as the owls staying up and united getting promoted was the same, How?
not wanting to start arguments just thought id ask what other peoples veiws on the star were and whether it is seen as biast because i really think it is.
Well if they don't bring out a supplement of United's achievements this season then yes they are biast.I noticed in the Star at the start of the season, they had colored pics of the owls players & our's in black & white??.Perhaps the editor is an Owl.
The Star normally publishes 'specials' at the beginning and end of each season for both clubs. Obviously because of Utd's success this season they published a promotion special with the appropriate cover title. Publishing one for Wednesday with an appropriate cover title after staying up against the odds is the same thing. Cannot see any bias in that.
What I can see is evidence that some supporters do indeed have chips on their shoulders
8balltiger 14-05-2006, 21:42 chips are all that rag is fit for
Ousetunes 15-05-2006, 09:02 I thought you were joking but apparently not. There, on the counter at my local newsagent's is a special publication to celebrate Wednesday's staying up! Well, let's hear it for the owls then - fourth bottom in the Championship now merits a fan's souvenir: 'Staying Up'!
What next? Beat Barnet in the second round of the FA Cup and celebrate this fine achievement with a collector's edition DVD (featuring extra footage of the players on the coach)?
Either the standards to which a club with such a proud history and stature has seriously set its targets a lot lower than it used to (ie, avoid relegation) or - hopefully for the benefit of all the decent Wednesdayites - the Sheffield Star is struggling for money.
to the chip on the shoulder post, not at all i have loads of friends that are wednesday fans and my girlfriend is a season ticket holder at hillsborough i on the other hand at bramall lane but i just say how i see it many times i have bought the star this season and wednesday have lost and played bad by all accounts yet the star will have the same if not better ratings than united. plus like someone already said wednesday had a colour team poster and we get black and white which normally happens.
A rag that prints lots of "cat up tree" stories is hardly going to miss the opportunity to sell a few hundred extra copies, and a few grands worth of extra ad's.
Each team gets it's own each year. Don't worry yourself about it. ;)
not that bothered (yes i am really), but seriously i was just wondering what other fans thought.
Jazzybmzoo 15-05-2006, 12:08 Lets face it guys the Star is a sh*t paper. If you only read the sport section like i do, just check www.sheffieldtoday.net in the morning.
I haven't noticed any bias at all - admittedly being an Owl I don't read the United bits, but they both seem to obtain equal coverage - both in issues & shiny pictures. And i'm entirely certain that United will get their luv as well, soon. What did really fu*k me off of late was the letters printed in the Green Un the week after the Blades got promotion confirmed, with braindead Utdites just writing in & not even mentioning the acheivement but just trying to rip it out of Wednesday! I still get seethe over that.
Ousetunes: it was sixth bottom i'll have you know.
Up the Owls!!
i guess it does sway abit depending on what team you support
Ousetunes 16-05-2006, 10:56 You finished sixth from bottom? I apologise....,
The thing is, and I'm saying this with my rose tinted goggles placed firmly in their case, is that a promotion special might be worth reading whereas a relegation dogfight success simply reminds you of what a poor season you've had.
Do you really want to remind yourself about losing five in a row (I'm talking hypothetically) or going six games without a goal? It's hardly riveting reading, is it?!
I'm not having an anti-Wednesday rant, more a 'stupid Sheffield Star' rant! Anyway, as Jazzy says, if you want to catch up on local sport you just go to the website he stated (although I have noticed that the website doesn't always contain Blades match reports like you'd find in the rag itself).

Agent Gypo 16-05-2006, 15:58 Confusion. There is a publication by The Star celebrating the Blades' promotion.
Even if there wasn't, it's hardly anything to lose any sleep over, The Star is crap anyway.

When is it being published.Cheers
I saw it for sale a week or so back, not long after the last game had been played. Not seen any copies lying around newsagents over the last few days though so if you're really desperate to read a "biased" papers tribute to Utd then you may well be out of luck :|
Sock Monkey 20-05-2006, 14:24 Hmmmm. Not sure if we should take seriously any accusation of bias from a person that can't spell the word 'biased'.
Anyway, why would you think the Star would be even handed? There are a number of reasons why you would expect it to be totally biased.
Firstly, buying a business that produces newspapers like the Star takes maximum coin - having paid the price, this bestows the right on the owner to make sure their views are reflected in the editorial content.
Secondly, articles are written by people, and people always have views of their own - and journos are the worst of all for being opinionated.
Finally, it's not bias if it's true - Wednesday are the glamour club and so they will always get the most attention - United on the other hand...

Wednesday the glamour club, don't make me laugh,I have a supplement from the middle of the season & both of the Blades pics are in black & white, while the Owls are in colour, the same happened last season, the guy who writes the article must be colour blind as well.
well dictionary corner sorry for this missed spelling sorry to have offended you.
moving on...
what i think people are forgetting (wednesday fans especially) is that the time wednesday was the big glamour club has now past they are an average club with no prospects unlike united however who are going place on and off the pitch.

Good call, going back to the championship next year:thumbsup:
Robbie Loving 21-05-2006, 17:36 Good call, going back to the championship next year:thumbsup:
with our estimated £35 million we will make in the next year, plus 2 yearly parachute payments we would get if we WAS relegated, i dont think that is too bad a situation..... well i believe it would be a situation the pigs wendy would like to be in
last i saw was dave allen arguing over 400k ha ha ha ha

Thought i'd add my two penneth. As an owl i was suprised to see the supplement for sale, although it was a good achievement for the season it is not enough for a supplement. But the Star sells papers and obviously thought they'd make money out of it (i bought one :D). As for your view on Blades getting worse ratings than the Owls, i'll remind you that each ratings are given by the fan who covers each team. I know for Wednesday it is Paul Thompson. It is your Utd correspondent given the team the ratings. So no, there is no bias at all.
theres not enough crime in sheffild for them to report be glad they can waste time on celebrating wednesdays staying up, and to be fair its more to celebrate for wednesday than for united to celebrate staying in the "championship" again if it were the case.

on the player ratings bit -i think the guys who report on the 2 sides are different people, paul thompson the owls reporter is a huge owls fan but surely the ratings are given by each teams respective reporter so nothing to do with the editing of the papaer as a whole
pitsmoorlad 22-05-2006, 06:40 let's face it, newspapers are in business to make money and will publish anything to acheive that end.Thats why they print eye catching headlines, "Freddie Starr ate my hamster" / "Jade Goodie braincell found" (by the way only one of these headlines is true). So if they thought a supplement about a cat walking down the street would sell copies they'd print it. I'm a lifelong Owls fan but would I buy the "Safe" supplement ? You must be kidding. Last year we deserved one, this year the Blades deserve one. And watch out for more supplements coming up to the start of the new season.
obviously hes a poor sheffield united fan if he gives them ratings like that and probably like most of our fan base only turn up for big games. why are wednesday fans more interested in us coming down than anything else.
Jazzybmzoo 22-05-2006, 12:03 Or perhaps (and yes I recognise its the 'attendance argument' again) but its a FACT Wednesday are a better supported club than United, which may explain why more emphasis is given to the Owls in newspapers (boosting sales and the like) - even though Utd are now in the Premiership (they did go up, didn't they?..) :hihi:

Hoo-hoo-hoo! Quality mate. Hope Lucketti does a sterling job holding off Henry, Van Nistelrooy et all. And before you start with, '...but at least we'll be playing teams/players like this next season...'. Mate, i'd be the first to admit that Wednesday could in no way hack the Prem. this year. Just like we struggled in the Champ. this year. But there's a buzz & expectation about Hillsborough (just as i'm sure there was at the Lane) that has been lacking for too long. Yep, we are scandalarsely in debt, we haven't got the strongest squad, but where going very much in the right direction and I find it hilarious how the Blades fans go out of their way to prove otherwise. I reckon there just scared of what may be this time next year...
My son puts newspaper down for his puppy to use as a toilet. It is good to see how often the pup scores a bullseye on the back page of The Star. That's probably the best use for that rag, as it is invariably awash with articles biased towards the non-achievers from S6. Personally, I won't buy one until the bias is removed and some fair and honest reporting is available.
If I had another entry on my media wish list, it would be to remove Look North from our televisions as they show a similar bias towards our neighbours from up north - the ones with the 'illustrious history' - but no future.
Can't you see past the end of your Lane?
about lucketti you ever thought of squad players and we then will be buying new as you may have heard there are rumours of signing a celtic defender called virgo and of course we got the great bromby to come back, and with this wednesday moving in the right direction, what most blades dont like is the fact that after finishing something like 6th from bottom now ur fans belive youll be a promotion contender next season, yet the blades will be coming back down. not saying much though i reckon weve more chance of winning the world cup than wednesday going up next season, not because of me been bias but because i believe that there are to many better sides i dont think it would be as easy for any team to get out next season. with regards to united next season i will be happy for them to finish 4th from bottom.
carloslechef 22-05-2006, 21:03 go on spadge.just tell warnock to send us all his players he dunt want cos we do need players....LOL...heard sturock was askin me to c if u fancie playin left wing since u displays on a sunday have turned his atencion to YOU.lmao..i think utd will do well tho pick points up away n win u odd games at home.any team is beatable.but in my heart wants u down.(SORRY ME OLD FLOWER)

Agent Gypo 23-05-2006, 10:54 I'm amazed.
We've been promoted for the first time in 12 seasons, and yet some Blades are whining about The Sheffield Star??????
The Star is absolute trash, who cares whether it's bias or not, or how much/little coverage they afford us.

Exactly ! Who gives a care about Star reporting. You put it right in perspective.
believe me mate im 19 and been going with my grandad and now my own mates since i was 3 so befor you start saying im more bothered about the star i aint i just wanted to start a discussion and see what other people think but then again i guess that was a bad idea with some of the people on here who only come on to correct peoples spellings and try and start an argument.
Sock Monkey 27-05-2006, 18:55 All this talk about 'my club's bigger than your club' makes me wonder. If by any chance United's gates next year are lower than Wednesday's, despite them being in the top echelon, will the United fans be appropriately embarrassed?
I noticed how much of a pay rise they gave Warnock for working the miracle - a paltry £100k. That shows how much they rate him. God help him if you come straight back down!
What if United come down and Wednesday pass them going the other way? Is there any pain more exquisite for United fans? Will they all move to Chesterfield?
I can't wait for the new season and those early episodes of Football Heaven on Radio Sheffield - the faithless will be howling. Warnock got you up and still last season it was all 'Warnock out' every night. We should talk about United having fans (as in fanatics) rather than supporters. That badge of honour will really have to be earned this year and many on the red and white side of the city will be found wanting, I fear.

what you fail to mention is that he is already on 400k a year, so basically he is getting per week, the same as a top earner of the club,

more chance of united winning the prem than this happening

I think the £35million includes the parachute payments. You also need to increase your wage bill which will eat into the £35m.The teams who went down the season before last,Norwich and Palace are hardly rolling in it now despite collecting the windfall.
A premiership season can also be the start of a troubled time also.Just look at Bradford,Swindon and Barnsley.Sometimes standing still is a lot safer. The new season will be the hardest test Warnock's had to face. All will be revealed.

the 35 million is excluding parachute payments,
you refer to palace and norwich..... well they can afford the wages of players what other teams in the championship cant, ie wednesday plymouth etc.... thats what the parachute payments do for you, it doesnt keep the money so high that you can still make the big signings.
bradford, swindon and barnsley have all had financial difficulty now, but teams are more clever with there money these days, what with teams getting deducted points for going in to administration.

I'm sure that if you get relegated you won't make the same mistakes as others.Wednesday's problem was that we got relegated before clubs got wise.
Another factor was the disasterous on digital deal that collapsed.
United's quandry now is who can they attract with the money they have to spend and why would players want to go to the lane?
If you get too many big time charlies only there for the money you can lose the obvious team spirit that currently exists.
As i say this will be Warnock's biggest test.
Robbie Loving 27-05-2006, 21:19 Another factor was the disasterous on digital deal that collapsed.
wasn't going to mention this, because this wasnt the reason for say barnsleys failure,
to be honest, i dont believe that we will struggle to the same effect most wednesday fans claim, and i think they all know this to
sufc_tom 27-05-2006, 21:25 The ITV digital fiasco has left alot of clubs crippled and caused the slump in the market at the time which is only now fully recovered.
Another shrewd peice of business from the powers at Bramall lane at this time was to not roll the red carpet out before the carraige has shown up in that we didn't spend money we was promised until we had it...which ultimately never came our way. Alot of other clubs who was doing well at the time (Burnley springs to mind) spent quite adventerously, got their fingers burn't and haven't fully recovered yet.
happyhippy 28-05-2006, 15:59 To go back to the OP's point, I have to agree that it is ASTONISHING that the local rag honestly thinks that a supplement to give a lasting testament to a season long struggle is worthwhile.
Going back 15 years or so, there were loads of supplements about Day Before Thursday as at the time they were having a period of success. Fair play to them, and they deserved it. Nothing in particular was made of our miraculous escapes in the first two seasons back in the top flight (both of which were surely against greater odds than Day Before Thursday staying up).
I'n not saying I'd have wanted to have a supplement detailing some heavy thumpings, but there does seem to be a 'disproportionate' parampara about the blue bit of the city surviving near the bottom of the table.
Seem to recall 'twas ever thus.
in a nutshell. thats was my thinking too. its like i was suprised yesterday when we got the back page well most of it. but the little piece wednesday had got was saying how much two american teams couldnt wait that wednesday would be going to play them. making out that it was bigger than man utd or chelsea going, but obviously they aint got no more dribble to write.
(also to anyone who comes on the bored correcting punctuation and grammer then sorry if it isnt great im in a rush you see.)
crookesey 07-06-2006, 14:12 There was a special Blades promotion issue, it had lots of pictures so even you lot would have been able to see it on the news stand (see it but probably not understand it). Perhaps it was the word 'Promotion' that confused you?
Agent Gypo 07-06-2006, 16:09 The Star is garbage. There's no point crying about 'disproportionate this' or 'bias that', it's a local rag that's about as interesting as watching ITV.
jossyboy 07-06-2006, 17:08 same about people going on about look north being biased towards leeds, i don't watch look north or read the star as they're both utter toss

Is it true that your younger players gave up their seats on the bus to Warnock's more mature signings?

yeah, well they have achieved promotion to the prem so i think they should respect there elders/superiors
anyways, with an average of 27 in the squad:huh:
