View Full Version : Forum Mountain Bike Ride
DaBouncer 14-05-2004, 14:46 Since John_t kindly got my Mountain Bike fixed I'm interested in getting back into shape.
I always enjoyed mountain bike riding (even it was never proper off road biking I did).
Anyone interested in a weekend Bike Ride effort thingy mi bob, where we meet up for a ride in the peak district or summat?
Yes, a few people almost got one off the ground, but when it came to actually going out it all fell apart (me included). Count me in if the time is good, are talking about doing something this weekend?
DaBouncer 14-05-2004, 18:20 Not THIS weekend, but maybe one Sunday in June perhaps?
i'd probably come.
just ordered a shiny new rear wheel :D
anywhere in particular in the Peaks? it's pretty big and caters for all abilities (though that depends on the speed you go at in my opinion). best place in the UK i've ridden though.
I'm in.
What about Sunday 6 June? - I wouldn't have been able to make the weekend before as I'll be in Cardiff watching the mighty Palace get promoted to the Premiership!! Eeeeagles!
Anyway, where was I. Oh yes, a mountain bike ride. Well I'm new to mountaining biking (have done a fair bit of road biking though) so I'd be please if someone offered up an off-road route that I could learn. However, if nobody has any other suggestions then I found this route (http://nhumby.tripod.com/thepeak.htm) on the web which I've yet to try.
The weather seems to be holding at last so I,ve got my bike out too and using it to get to work. There are some interesting urban trails that you can check out at http://www.transpenninetrail.org.uk/
Is this 'event' open to fit and unfit people alike?
DaBouncer 19-05-2004, 18:22 Anyone who wishes to come. It's not an endurance test, more of a just get yer bikes out and enjoy the fresh air like!
did this event ever get off the ground or has it just fizzled out?
An invitation: Who'd like to join me for an intermediate ride taking a route from Mike Pearces Guide to Mountain Biking in Derbyshire. (14 miles over 3/4 of which is off-road - estimated time to complete: 3hours). You should be reasonably fit, able to get your bike to and from Hope and carry a spare tube and basic tools for your bike. Discuss this and other possibilities at Walkabout this Sun at 8pm ken@spinac.com
Speedy_Jim 02-09-2004, 00:15 Might be up for a bit of that. When you planning to do it? I'd have to ride out to Hope but that won't be a problem
Any clues as to the route? You going up to Mam Tor and round the ridge towards Hollins Cross?
I've got a weekend lugging furnature for the folks so I might not be back in time for meeting up, but I'll try and make it
Jeez! Ride out there and then do 3 hours biking? I was going to get the train to Hope and back! (Something like £5 return I think).
The route from the book goes up Cave Dale to Eldon Hill Quarries then to Mam Tor and Hollins Cross and on to Nether Booth and Jaggers Cross. I haven't done this before so don't know exactly what I'm taking on, but as I've been cycling to work since the buses went on strike I reckon I'm up to it. www.spinac.com
... this one's for Sat 25th Sep, but will plan others ...
PaulTansley 02-09-2004, 10:56 This is an old thread I seem to have missed by DB anyway Kirk if you are still interested in a run say about 25 - 30 miles then I can arrange it.
Trouble is my mountain bike is still in the hands of the thief that took it and i don't intend to buy another as mountain biking is'nt my forte but i can borrow John t's and come along.
Anyone inteested PM me and when I get the numbers up we can set a date.
Don't worry about the time of year as winters are as good as summers just rap up and come along, leave the course to me.
I'll have to consider if i can trust you to lock it up!!!!..lol

out walking sat, but was planning a trip to Wharnecliffe woods sun afternoon - just to suss out what the deal is there - not looking for anything too extreme, but just something local that might be fun and a little challenging. hope you get a ride out on sat and maybe see you sun?
I try to get up to the wharncliffe woods most sunday mornings but i don't go too mad downhilling ( too many briken bones ) so if anyone wants a blast around the woods/crags then e-mail me on mooch01@blueyonder.co.uk
live/ride and drink.........love it!!!!!!
I just got a mountain bike, I'm 26 and I've never ridden in woods/countryside, I've already fallen off my bike twice and that's just riding along city center lol
is there anywhere a beginner can go, or any groups that take beginners??
If you can get your bike in a car then round ladybower or clumber park are both excellent for beginners (maybe a bit late to organise now, but today would be superb!)
PS hope you wear a helmet - on holiday I heard of someone going into a coma when falling off a bike in a car park - just going over a speed ramp (never found out whether he survived), and was out with someone recently (a doctor) who ended up going to hospital for stitches when his bike landed on his head after a fall (no helmet). Always take special care on the road ...

well I don't speed or anything like that, I'm too afraid after a car accident about 5 years ago..my wheel got stuck in the tramline on west street, but I heared it happens almost to everybody once..
thanks for advice though
Ladybower is a superb ride - if you can get out there, then they do bike hire (although the one I hired needed some work).
Also there's a really good company that do beginners weekends in derbyshire. PM me if you want the details.
