Nine Inch Nails - Downward Spiral
CaptainSleep 14-05-2004, 16:04 Which ever man bought DIDO wants shooting, terrible.
Last album I bought was by the Stands, though have bought Franz Ferdinand recently and am considering getting Keanes album.
Weirdest recent purchase was the last SUper Furry Animals album on vinyl, the fourth side has no songs on it but an elaborate etching of two horses
Last week bought Katie Melua and new Prince albums together.

Now then, let's get this straight: I do not require a bullet through some part of my body or other for purchasing work by the aforementioned artiste.
I suggest she has probably the finest voice (you know, in tune, powerful and extremely clear as opposed to the majority of her contempories' screechings and wailings) since Karen Carpenter.
You really ought to think again.
Tut tut.

Agreed.
I'd much rather listen to Dido than any crappy manufactured boy or girl band tosh you cared to mention.
A.B.Yaffle 14-05-2004, 16:46 The last CD I bought was a blank one. Might sound a bit boring, but at least I can play it full volume at night without the neighbours complaining!
Bought the new Morrissey 7" single on vinyl yesterday.
God, it's been ages since i've actually bought a CD ( if tha knows wot a mean! nudge, nudge, wink, wink )

My brother likes The Nine Inch Nails and he thinks the Johnny Cash version of 'Hurt' is better than the 'Nails' version. In fact since watching a program about Johnny Cash on TV a couple of months ago I have bought some of his CD's and he is really great.
Dido, Life for Rent.
I'm glad to see so many other fans out there too. ;)

Frankly, I'd rather jack!
Dido is, I have to agree, still better than a lot of the dreck that winds up in the charts but come on. There's so much better stuff out there.
For me Dido falls into the 'Lighthouse-Family-stylee uninteresting musical wallpaper' category.
The last one I bought what Amy winehouse.
magicgem 15-05-2004, 13:05 Stevie Wonder Songs in the Key of Life-I'm only 20
Actually its a replacement copy beacuse I smashed the old one accidently?

Dido's voice may be clear, but there is no way it could be called powerful. I always find it a bit thin and slightly off key.
To me she always sounds like a bored shop assistant singing along to the radio. There's no character in her voice at all.
Chris_Sleeps 16-05-2004, 12:06 I bought 'Jeff Buckley - Mystery White Boy' from Fopp, but only because it was an offer.

I agree, totally incipid. Her own brother, Rolo, told her she couldn't sing and she would never make it. It's a case of "networking" , luck and contacts as far as Dido is concerned.
She makes music for people who in my opinion can't be bothered to like music but need "white noise" in the background.
AKA. the casual radio 2 listener
I cant stand her either, shes flat and all her songs sound too alike.
For the record, I too am totally unimpressed with Didos singing ability.

i've started listening to radio 2 as i'm in my 20's. i can only assume radio 3 will follow in my 30's, radio 4 in my 40's etc... my god! i'm destined to end up listening to the world service all the time. help me!
bit off thread here, but am being retro and listening to REM - monster, because it reminds me of summer for some reason. and i'm feeling extra summery today. shame i'm stuck in revising.

Yeah, so do I :P but im not a "casual" radio two listener
noseyrosie 16-05-2004, 16:20 For some good Dido altenatives (i.e. female vocalists with good voices) who aren't so tedious and bland, why not try some folk stuff like Kate Rusby, Eliza Carthy, Cara Dillon, etc? Dido has an almost a folkie style but her songs are really bland and unoriginal.
Did anyone see the Dead Ringers p***take the other day? Hilarious! "I'm not a happy bunny...I hate the weather, and my boyfriend's crap, and the world is crap..." or something of that ilk.

I think its what is termed 'a grower'. Wasn't sure at first listen (i'd read that it was return to Telling Stories territory - not quite true), but it seems to get better each time. Theres no Sproston Green or One to Another 'bounce around' on it though!

WEEZER! The song called 'Island in the sun' always makes me remember my holiday in Ayia Napa!!
Chris_Sleeps 20-05-2004, 19:51 You poor bugger. :)
I thought Ayia Napa was the holiday destination for people into R&B and urban music, so how come you ended up listening to Weezer?
Chris.
I didn't! lol.
It was on a CD my mate took with us and he used to play it in the hotel. It's just one of those accidental songs you hear and it brings back all the memories.
Clubbing it was a different matter altogether! Black & White, Castle, Gas etc . . R&B and Dance mate!
club mix 2004!!

London Symphony Orchestra's version [2004] of Sibelius's third and seventh Symphonies. Bought at Virgin Records, Liverpool. Served by a disgusting oik with dirty hands and piercings. 'Fanks mate' he said, through yellow teeth. 'Die in Agony', I thought.

Pseudonym,
I know exactly what you mean. However, re Classical, have you tried the Naxos range of cds? They have revolutionised Classical music by offering superb interpretations of the Classics at very, very reasonable prices, i.e, £4.99. The company use less well-known, but very, very good performers and orchestras such as the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and the Kodaly Quartet. Many of their cds are highly-acclaimed, and the company is regarded with the greatest of respect. I don't think they can beat £2.95 though...

Thanks for the recommendation, Timo but to be honest (not always a wise move these days) I'm more of a BT 'subscriber', as it were... and I'm not talking British Telecom here!
There's a lot of surprisingly good quality material available in certain out of the way places, if you know where to look...
EDIT
Oh, indeed Timo... I'd like to think it was the ace... But I'd be fooling myself! ;)
Pseudonym,
Oh, of course. I see what you mean now re 'certain out of the way places'. Ooh, you are a card, Pseudonym!

do the sacds play in any cd player because ive got a nine inch nails one what plays fine but the miles davis one ive got wont:confused:
Certain CDs are "hybrid" in that they can be played in SACD players and also in normal CD players, though obviously, the multichannel effect will only be obtained when a SACD player and the correct equipment is used.
There are some older recordings recorded in 4 channel sound which have been brought out on SACD. Many of the pentatone recordings are of this sort.
A recent recording on Harmonia Mundi makes use of the 4 channels for choral works, each section of the choir coming from a specific location.
By the way, Timo, did you know that Naxos CDs are going up next month?
Hopman,
It does not surprise me, as so many of them have been acclaimed by Gramaphone magazine, won awards etc. The 'just under a fiver' average price was too good to last. I bought one only this week too- a collection of Greig's music. I normally avoid light Classical, preferring Bruckner, Wagner etc. However, I found that I really like Greig, and admire his talent for writing simple, wonderful tunes that will be remembered for centuries after Stockhausen is long forgotten. Yes, Naxos is a nice label in the main, and its prices up to now mean that people can afford to 'take the plunge' with music they are not entirely sure they will appreciate/enjoy. Sometimes the label issues a duffer, but their Tintner versions of Bruckner Symphonies, and Kodaly Quartet versions of Beethoven's late Quartets are rightly recognised as superb.
I don't think that Grieg can be considered as anything but second division behind the great masters, Beethoven, Mozart et al. However that is not to say that sometimes he hits the heights. His piano concerto is one of those heights, although I believe he was thinking about writing a second concerto.
His unfinished opera "Olav Tryggvason" contains some good music, but it never seems to be performed - although it has appeared on CD on two occasions.
A few years ago we visited Troldhaugen and spent a very enjoyable lunchtime with a sandwich and coffee in the cafe at the museum where in the background could be heard the familiar sounds of the concerto. The sun was shining over the fjord and it was one of those blissful moments that lingers in the memory.
The place was reasonably quiet as well and this contributed to the general air of peace about the place. When we visited in 1993 it was very crowded (but they were celebrating Grieg's 150th birthday).
If anyone goes to Troldhaugen, watch out for the slippery rocks around the "Komposten"!
