View Full Version : Creswell Model Village
Im moving up there in June, from my parents house in Redmires. I know its not strictly Sheffield but is anyone on here living there or moving there, and what is the area like? Its a new development of old pit houses, and they have made a real good job. I think a similar place in sheffield would have been a lot more expensive.
Azrael316 15-05-2006, 09:13 To be honest, Cresswell dosn't have the best rep in that area. My wife and I lived in Bolsover for 4 years and Cresswell was somewhere at that time we would avoid at all costs. However, this is changing, with the redevelopment of the 'Model' it is now getting a LOT better, and on travelling through it at the weekend, it even looks better.
Hope you like the area as its getting better by the day, and the houses are looking excellent.
Thanks. I have noticed there are a few groups of kids hanging about, but nothing that id worry about. Ive spoken to a few of the locals and they seem to like the place. Suppose ill find out when i get in there!!
bladesdog 18-05-2006, 19:53 i live and work in the model village for the last 14 years seen the good and bad times it had a reputation but i was unfounded most of the problems was caused by people off the model the model is not a bad place to live
I was impressed with the quality of the refurb jobs done by Henry Boot, much higher standard than you see in cheap and nasty new build flats in town.
Unfortunately, even though I was very taken with one of the properties, I decided I didn't want to mortgage slave myself for 25 years and then see prices crash.
I know colleagues from work who thought these would be "great" for BTL as their pension, until they realised they are restricted sale to those who will use it only as their main residence. Lad (from Huddersfield) who works in the site sales office gets days without visitors, and then groups arrive all at once. Recent feature in the property supplement of Derbys Times said they were selling very well, but they have been for sale nearly 12 months now?
Its a shame as you could buy one of these at sub £20k about 2+ years ago.
What Creswell needs is a direct rail link to Sheffield, rather than just the hourly Worksop-Mansfield-Nottingham Robin Hood Line train, that will remove the barrier. By car, it felt close to Crystal Peaks, but quite far from Sheffield.

rebel md 22-05-2006, 00:13 Think the areas seen its worst times, and should be OK. A few years ago, i'd have said differently. Creswell has had its social probs, lot of cheap nasty heroin in the area, BUT is close to M1, now has a rail service, and there are large employers moving into nearby villages, so it'd be a good time to buy there, I think.
The transport is a worry, i have a car but my girlfriend will be on the train when i cant drive her. The main reason i have bought up there is the amount of house im getting for my money, the same in sheffield is twice the price. I cant guarantee that the market is going to stay stable but as home owners, dont we all take that risk? I see it as an investment, rather than a debt.
As for the area, i thinks its the same as everywhere, good and bad points and its just something we'll have to live with! Im looking forward to it, never lived away from my parents for longer than two weeks so ill learn a lot of things!
My wife and I moved from Creswell in November. It wasn't the nicest area I've ever lived! There are a lot of kids hanging around outside the shops and there were a large number of louts with unregistered motorbikes who insisted on riding them up and down our road all weekend.
The area IS improving, but it's painfully slow - until they get decent public transport to the village I can't see this changing. However, the money they're investing in Creswell Crags may seen an increase in investment in the village.
...and the chinese over the road from the Model Village is really good and very cheap! :)
Hi, we have been living in Model Village, Creswell for nearly a year now. The houses have been done up lovely and the people are all very friendly and nice. We have had no problems whatsoever since living here and neither have any of our neighbours. The houses are very cheap to rent and I would have no problem in recommending anyone to live here:)
zakwaters 01-03-2007, 12:32 My name is Zak Waters and I spent a few days with the residents on the cresswell estate a few years ago photographign the residents for the Heritage Lottery Fund. I have to say I had a wonderful couple of days and everyone in the model village were fabulous and very kind towards me with their time. I have heard some negative things about the area, having experienced some time there I have to say I wish there were more communities like theirs as it felt safe and was very much like the community I grew up in the north east. With that in mind I am thinking of revisiting the area to continue a photographic study of the village photographing residents in their daily routines, etc. If anyone who lives in the village reads this could you please contact me at zak@watersz.fsnet.co.uk
thanks Zak
princessjane 01-03-2007, 13:05 hi, i live in clowne which is a village near to creswell. i have heard alot of bad stuff about the village and i don't think their local primary school is that good, but i think the village is getting alot better. creswell crags is good though. I don't drive and i though i'd be ok but i find clowne and the surrounding villages too far out and not much to do, so we are moving to sothall next to rother valley as the houses are quite cheap there and is a very nice estate and close to crystal peaks so is alot better for me especially as we have dogs that love to swim, so rother valley is perfect!

Hi, Yellowrose,
I live on the Village and am about to advertise my house for rent. (my girlfirend has a job in Derby so its too far for her). The house is immaculate, new carpets, new kitchen, 2 big reception rooms and master bedroom has walk in wardrobe room off it. The train station is 5 mins walk walk away.
If you are interested in renting mine, give me a call on 0776 5264996. It really is a nice place to live and i dont really want to move to Derby!
Yellowrose 02-03-2007, 20:49 Im not interested in renting privately thank you as I need security of tenure.
zakwaters 07-03-2007, 23:50 If you look at my post above you will see that I am very eager to get back on the estate and document the people living on the estate. If there is anyone reading this posting and you live in the village would you kindly get back to me zak@watersz.fsnet.co.uk

zakwaters 08-03-2007, 00:28 well spotted but was it really worth the energy. Can you help or did you just work for the Oxford Dictionary...?

It's just a little irritating when placenames aren't correctly spelt - even by visiting photographers.
I'm a son of Derbyshire by birth, and my last job used to take me to every corner of the county, including Creswell.
The village lies within the parish of Elmton-with-Creswell, though Elmton is much the smaller of the two. If you visit Creswell village churchyard, you will find a memorial to the 80 men who died in the 1950 colliery disaster. Creswell Crags is the only site in the UK where palaeolithic cave art has been found (discovered in 2003). The Creswell Crags visitor centre is on the Notts side of the border. I have been fortunate to have had a private tour of the caves not normally open to the public.
The Model village has had a chequered history. It was built on land leased from the nearby Welbeck estate in the late 1800s, and designed in then fashionable garden estate ideas beloved of the late Victorians. It housed the miners families, but with the demise of the local pits during the Thatcher era, the area suffered high unemployment and consequent decline. Creswell Model village declined with it. It is fortunate that these historic houses have now been remodelled and given a new lease of life.
zakwaters 08-03-2007, 11:30 Yes I agree it can be irratating but we are not all perfect so sorry to upset you. Thanks for the info anyway. I have spent a few days on the village a few years ago for the Lottery and enjoyed the company of the residents so much I really fancy going back and spending some timem with them again and continuing where I left off. Did you say that you lived in the village or know of people living there? Best wishes Zak

I don't live in Creswell, and I don't know anyone local who lives there either.
