Has anyone else noticed how fragrantly middle-aged people tend to smell?
What an olfactory delight it is to be in the company of persons in this age group, where one's nasal senses can bask and frisk in the subtle aura of delicately scented flowers, expensive perfumes and clear spring waters.
Why is this? Perhaps its because middle aged people tend to have regular access to showers and baths and are acutely aware of the cardinal importance of personal hygiene in confined spaces; or because they are troubled by neither the raging, musky, hormones of pubescent youth nor by the incontinence-inducing ravages of old age; or because instead of spending their evenings in sweaty night clubs gyrating to club anthems, they tend to relax at home in the bath, listening to the soothing aural delights of Classic FM; or because they have learned the subtle arts of moderation and balance when it comes to the use of deodorants and perfumes; or because they tend to be wealthy enough to afford their own transport, thereby avoiding the noisome throng of train, bus and tram users and the ever present threat from pavement dog poo; or because they tend to be acutely aware of the importance of dental hygiene; or because they possess their own, washing machines, thereby enabling them to have a plentiful supply of clean garments, including socks and underwear; or because they can afford to buy subtle, expensive perfumes rather than the industrial strength cleaning fluids which masquerade as perfumes in downmarket establishments.
