View Full Version : Ban Cars in Sheffield!
I assure you we'd all be a lot happier if we did. No more queues or pollution. We'd all talk to each other more often as we walked around town. We could all live in harmony and not spend our time shouting about how everyone who gets in our way should be banned/shot.

Just think about it for a minute. What part of life is it that causes most rage? Road rage of course. We all get hot and flustered. Tired of sitting in queues. Target our anger at anything nearby, be it another car driver, a bike or whatever. Most people don't need cars. We could all live perfectly happily without em. Everyone get a bike, please!
Most people don't need cars.
Precisely. MOST people. We couldn't ALL live happily without one. My girlfriend certainly couldn't, with her co-ordination and mobility problems...
God, I fell for it didn't I?! This was just a mickey-take of the 'ban cyclists' thread. I feel like a prize pillock now...
madmutant 12-05-2006, 16:15 thered be less carbon dioxide in the air if cyclists stop using their bikes - FACT.

Prophets21 12-05-2006, 19:42 cars **** me off.
i agree.
My level of angriness would be a lot higher if I was stood up on a full bus, waiting in a massive queue of other buses transporting all the people who no longer have cars, than it would be sat in a traffic jam listening to the radio/cd. But that’s just me though.

co-ordinatination problems and there let loose on the roads
ive got a license but dont drive as it makes more sense to catch the bus although with the people being let loose on the roads i might have to start as i would feel more safe being able use my own driving skills to avoid the nutters rather than relying on a person i dont know> the bus driver.
Banning them from the city centre would be better to the publics health than banning smoking in public places.
It sounds stupid I agree.
However we would all still be alive and is there not a point to make that we might just enjoy life a bit more not having to spend all that time stuck in traffic?

She needs ME to drive her places, she doesn't drive herself!! She's got so many back and hip problems that she can't use public transport at peak times because she ends up on the chiropractor's table whenever she doesn't get a seat. Which would be often because she's young and not in a wheelchair so most people don't believe that she's disabled.

thought of not having my car is not worth thinking about, by car... i leave my house in a morning at 7.20am and im in work by 7.35am, without car... leave house at 6.35am wait at least ten mins for bus to a tram stop.. then catch tram for ten min journey, then walk for 10 mins get to work 7.55am, plus the bus and trams fares now are way to high, works out cheaper to tax test insure and run my car. than pay all the fares.
rant over
why ban cars in sheffield?

how many people would DIE from not having a car? Maybe people who wouldn't be able to get food because they live remotely. not many though. How many people couldn't work? More this time. How many people would find life difficult? Quite a few, the infirm, people with large families. But a large number would only be slightly inconvenienced, and some, I think quite a few, would see an increase in the quality of life, as they get fitter, feel healthier and not so trapped by congestion. (and potentially save a lot of money!)
I'm only making the point that maybe the convenience of having a car is actually not always so convenient.
I am also making the point that the thread about banning cyclists is a bit ott in that it makes us all out to be evil, when in fact cycling does no one any harm whatsoever.

Better still, let's roll back the anti-car policies and measures enforced by the council and be able to drive around in a more free-flowing city.
Private transport is here to stay. It's a choice between accepting that and planning adequately for it, or pricing most motorists off the road and leaving those of us who can afford it with even higher motoring bills.
I never had a car until I was nearly 25 (as in my folks never had one when we were growing up as well), but the buses in Sheffield drove me to so much despair I cried on several occasions, as has my friend when she was pregnant and the buses kept mucking her about. My quality of life has imporved MASSIVELy since getting a car. NOw, I TOTALLY understand and appreciate the arguments about not using cars, but nless the public transport sevice dramatically improved in terms of number, frequency and direction of routes, reliability, prices, niceness of drivers etc there would be no way yuo'd ever see an increase in cars.
If the tram went everywhere in Sheffield, though, I'd probably forsake the motor.
rothschild 15-05-2006, 01:27 I personally couldn't care a jot if they banned cars in Sheffield. They have allready made life so difficult for car drivers that we just don't even bother trying to get into the city centre anymore. We go to barnsley instead if we want city centre shopping........or just do it on-line. Barnsley actually welcomes people into the city........and provides parking at reasonable costs. It has to be at least 2 years since we last ventured into the centre of Sheffield. It wasn't a pleasant experience at all. I hate meadowhell so we don't go there either. In fact to be honest most of our shopping is done on-line so we avoid all the arguments of vehicles on the roads and have much more free time to do what we want.
Unfortunately though we have to run 2 cars because of our work commitments. I have a daily 30 mile round trip which is not served well by public transport. Ok......perhaps I could find a way of getting to work on public transport but it would involve a series of buses and trains. Not only would the journey time be at least trebled but so would the cost. It takes me an hour round trip now........I am not prepared to make the same journey in 1 1/2 to 2 hours or more and that is just one way! It would mean me spending half of my life travelling to and from work on public transport or waiting around for connections! As for the cost........I don't doubt for one minute that a days public transport costs would equate to a week's costs in my car! As for my other half........he has a 140 mile round trip to make in order to go to work and back home. He also has to carry an enormous amount of "gear" with him because he is a truck driver. He could not physically catch a bus with all the stuff he has to transport! That is assuming he could use public transport to get him to and from work! Should it ever become physically possible then he could probably be looking at a travelling time of several hours just to get there and much dosh in fares! Fortunately he only has to make that car journey once a fortnight or less because he uses the truck.
If only life was so clear cut eh? Who was it that said "get on yer bikes" in order to find work?? Well whoever it was didn't take into account the actual distances that people might have to travel in order to work!
We are both of a "ripe" age now and there is no way would I even contemplate a 15 mile journey over the moors on a bike at my age!!
Anyhow.......in an ideal world etc......but we don't live in an ideal world do we? If somebody said to me that they would pay me my wage to stop at home and scrap my car then I would bite their hands off!
Any offers????? Stupid question! Do we feel guilty at running 2 cars? Not at all. At least we aren't sat at home claiming benefits and running a car as well! Ban our cars and you will also ban our jobs. As for walking around Sheffield and talking to each other.........yeh right! I think it is high time that some of us joined the real world.
cgksheff 15-05-2006, 01:38 I personally couldn't care a jot if they banned cars in Sheffield. I will just go on and on to produce a ...
... load of crap!!!
.
rothschild 15-05-2006, 02:45 OK......so cgksheff doesn't like my post? Apologies are offered if I have offended you in any way. I do object to the way in which you have altered my original post though. You have added your own words onto it and I question whether that is etiquette within Sheffield Forum? It is supposed to have been originally posted by me but I can assure all other readers that it wasn't! I did not say "I will just go on and on to produce a ..." That bit has been added on by you cgksheff........and I do take offense at that. You might feel that my post was a load of crap........that's your opinion and I will respect that. BUT........you should also respect my right to make the post to begin with and not interfere with it in any way. What is the point of having an open forum when members can alter what was actually said in order to make their own postings look good? You have tried to make me look like a fool for voicing my opinions, simply because they obviously don't match your own opinions.
I have seen this happen a lot on the Sheffield forum and it disappoints me. BUT........thats life isn't it? One mans meat etc.

Your original post kept saying "we'd all... [insert example here]". I just wanted to make the point that it didn't apply to everybody - some people rely on cars more than others. It seems that you agree, but your initial wording was too cut-and-dried and implied there would be no exceptions.
Maybe banning cars from journeying to the centre of town and stopping would work.
But banning them from the city itself, stupid idea.
Because of the crappy road network to get from one suburb to another on the other side of the city you have to drive through the centre.

I always start threads in this manner. It is a good way of getting people to respond. As the ban cyclists thread did. I don't think the person who started that thread would really like to see cycling banned. And if he/she does then he/she doesn't put forward particularly convincing arguments for a complete ban.
By the way, i don't really think that banning cars outright is a feasible idea (really?!). The city would grind to a halt and there'd be rioting in the streets. I just think a lot of people could live without their cars. So come on guys, get on a bike!
Definitely ban cars from the city centre though. A good park n ride scheme would work wonders.
