I can remember seeing it go up, especially the elephants, but can't remember where it was going to.
Was it Ripon Street rec? :)

Hi,

Some time after the World War 2 (lets say 1947-49) the Bertram Mills circus came to Sheffield. This was a big event at the time.

They wanted to set up the big top in Hillsborough Park but the Town Hall refused - something to do with damaging the grass - and sent them to Carbrook's Pheasant Inn ground instead. They were in town for two weeks and that is where I saw them perform.

In those days, Bertram Mills circus travelled by train and this was parked in the Wicker goods yards while they were here. I believe there was a parade of the animals from the goods yard to Carbrook but I didn't see it. Could this be what you remember?

Regards

I think this is what I remember actually. They do seem to be going from right to left in my memory from my vantage point at top of Newhall Road.
If I remember rightly Ripon Street rec came around 56/57
There was definitely elephants though.......:hihi:
