Was it Ripon Street rec? :) anderbyangel 12-05-2006, 13:11 i think it was just over the bridge on staniforth road on your right hand side Falls 12-05-2006, 15:06 Hi, Some time after the World War 2 (lets say 1947-49) the Bertram Mills circus came to Sheffield. This was a big event at the time. They wanted to set up the big top in Hillsborough Park but the Town Hall refused - something to do with damaging the grass - and sent them to Carbrook's Pheasant Inn ground instead. They were in town for two weeks and that is where I saw them perform. In those days, Bertram Mills circus travelled by train and this was parked in the Wicker goods yards while they were here. I believe there was a parade of the animals from the goods yard to Carbrook but I didn't see it. Could this be what you remember? They do seem to be going from right to left in my memory from my vantage point at top of Newhall Road. If I remember rightly Ripon Street rec came around 56/57 There was definitely elephants though.......:hihi: |
