View Full Version : That bright red shop on the High Street
Have you seen the state of that games shop, they have painted the entire shop bright red, it looks a complete mess and ruins the look of the old (ish) building it's in. The council should have some kind of laws to stop companies actively making the city centre look a mess.

They ask them to move to Meadowhall.
I know which one you mean. CEX. I was surprised that we had one of these. I do see what you mean by being too bright.
One of my big rant about the city of Sheffield is that we just build anything and everything without consideration of the surrounding buildings. It looks so odd. I was so disappointed that the column in front of the old city hall is gone ! I thought that was pretty historical looking. I hate it when old buildings are knocked down for really badly looking new ones.

Do you mean the war memorial in barker's pool? Surely it's still there?!
I'm sure you have to get planning permission to change the external colour of your building...... maybe we should report it to the council?
It looks a mess, it smells of sweaty underpants, and its full of chavs!Apparently the other day at lunch time they were blasting some music out the door which was all mo-fo-ing this that and the other - I've nowt against that but it might offend and upset a lot of people so I thought it was a bit out of order to play it on the PA!
Where do they get their goods from? Bit dodgy, surely?
Its not full of Chav's, I hate chav's and I'll go in CEX,
I dont mind the red, Its eye catching, makes you wonder what it is, makes you look... Its memeroable, and you dont even need to rememnber the name or exact position to tell others where it is... good advertising/running if you ask me..
the prices are not bad, some things are cheap, others you can pick up a little cheaper else where, but they have a VERY wide choice, a nice layout inside, and loads of room (and its Disabled/wheelchair friendly)
the ONLY issue is yes, the music is a little loud inside... but other than that, its fine..
CEX is a chain of stores, and not just UK wide, I believe theres like 20 in the UK or something.. and one in spain etc..
thier website is http://www.cex.co.uk/ if you want to check it out..
duckweed 18-05-2006, 22:29 I was in the 99p shop in Angel Street and they were playing a song there that contained a lot of detail and bad language I did not want my 10 year old to hear. Thankfully he was outside at the time but don't shops realise what they are playing?

Most shops play a local radio station, since thats all they are allowed to play due to licensing laws, hence why all the markets on the moor only have Hallam FM on ;)
I seriously doubt Tourette's FM have started broadcasting though. They aren't even allowed to say sh*t on the radio until after 9 or 10pm. So this was someone's CD they were playing, obviously.
As I say, it doesn't bother me but it's out of order when there's people with kids about.
It was really chavtastic in there a couple of weeks ago. I had to keep checking my bag. :o
The red does attract people in. It's an exchange shop. Not a proper shop which sell its goods at full price. I thought it was a nice idea. Esp swapping DVDs etc. It's just quite bright. Can you still complain even after the building permission has gone ahead for its changes ? Could've been muted to a colour which blends in with its surroundings.
Do you mean the war memorial in barker's pool? Surely it's still there?!
I think that area's been concreted over. The last time I saw it.
I think it's a bloody disgrace to the building itself. Why couldn't they use a banner of some sort instead of defacing the actual face of the building?
IMO the best looking building in the city centre is the next one down to the TSB bank. Now this monstrosity is spoiling the view.
Is there any law/ complaint that can be lodged to get the face returned to it's original colour?

The War Memorial is still there, and has never moved. It was for a time covered in plastic sheeting to protect it.
Yes, the red shopfront is naff
Yes, the music is naff and too loud
Yes, it does smell funny in there
But the prices and selection of previously used DVDs is better than at the other game stores in Sheffield.
And Sheffielders aren't ones to miss bargains ;)

You are such a misery, the bring a bit of colour to Sheffield, so what! Its not actually that bad in there.. Some cheap stuff!

bet u like the look of the old courts building near markets dont ya?
well it is about time we started making this city nice......... out with the old in with the new,
we need to be competing with the likes of manchester
this city is getting run down, its disgusting in the town centre, especially near castle market
I went past again today on the tram, god it looks a mess, and after all the effort put into restoring the buildings on that row.
well it is about time we started making this city nice......... out with the old in with the new,
Painting things bright red is the way foreward then is it ?

You don't see old buildings painted bright red in Manchester, they're not that stupid.
base2001 19-05-2006, 08:40 shall we bring back black and white tv's aswell, do you think?
cos i think the new hdtv is just making the old black and whts tv's look bad, it's a complete outrage.........................!
who do i complain to....................?

I'm not bothered about what they sell, another cheapo shop is a great addition to the city centre, it's the fact that the place looks so tacky and out of place. It's like painting half the town hall orange to "bring a bit of colour to it"

Are you mad, Manchester is full of old buildings, thats what makes it so attractive, you have probably only seen the bit that got bombed.

If everyone thought like you then this country would resemble one of the ex Eastern Bloc nations with concrete everywhere and we would have no York, Lincoln, Durham or Oxford.
People like old buildings because they are interesting and add variety. Restoring them is about respect for the environment.

Just to help you out, we are in the year 2006 :)

but do we want the city centre to look like it's 1965 ?

You make a good point.. Get rid of the old buildings and have more 'red shops'

or, get rid of the red buildings and build something stylish in steel and glass that has had a bit of thought put into it and doesn't look a complete arse.

Well things are starting to take shape in that way near the town hall end.. The shop is good itself with what it sells etc, But everyone 1 of its shops are painted in the same way.. So can't see them changing :)

agreed sumit which is good to look at!
around city hall and peace gardens are looking good,
cant wait to see what it will look like soon, as they are suppose to be knocking john lewis and the shops round that area down...... to rebuild nicer looking ones...........
but do we want the city centre to look like it's 1965 ?
Sadly that's what happens. What's the point in pulling down an old building to replace it with something worse?
The red shop looks naff, like some chavs have spraypainted it or something. If it was all red then it wouldn't be half as bad. A lot of Scottish towns go in for brightly painted old buildings (houses and shops, not castles obviously!) and it looks cool if its done right - I've seen them done in silver, pink, all sorts of mad colours.
heeleygirl 19-05-2006, 09:24 Whoever was responsible for allowing this shop to paint the frontage should
be sacked. Surely the owners of the property on High Street, whoever they are, cannot condone this. How do Sheffield City Council hope to create an attractive shopping centre when things like this are allowed ?. It looks
cheap and tacky the sort of thing you see in the rundown areas NOT acceptable on the main street in a city. Come on planning office WAKE UP:rant:
maxismydog 19-05-2006, 11:57 I think if you look at London, just for example, you see that modern and older buildings can e mixed but it has to be tastefully done. I think that once older building are gone they are gone forever so we should conserve where possible but that doesn't mean I am against tasteful regeneration and development. That shop is just an eyesore.
duckweed 19-05-2006, 11:57 I really don't think Sheffield Planning Department is on the ball. The red building is only one of many eyesores that have been allowed. Beautiful old buildings are being mangled all over the city centre.
You'd think that lessons would have been learned after the "eggbox" offices!!
ok, the paint job isnt that bad, and for all thoes who say "it wouldnt be as bad if they painted the whole place red" -- well, news flash, IT IS,
JUST Becaue the whole 'BLOCK' of shops isnt red, doesnt mean that its not ok..
all the other places on that line dont have any imagination, Cavell's (pub) near there is set back, as-is the job place just further down, And all the other shops are set forward...
do people complain about these looking 'odd' or out of place compared to the rest?? no...
Sheffield is moving forward, as the majority of people want, how can we move forward, if you dont want a shop to paint the front of the building, JUST to keep the 'older' look -- thats standing still if you ask me...
they will have had planning permission to do it, otherwise they would have either been closed down by now, or had to change it (since its been there like 4 weeks or so)

The 'majority' are so obsessed with 'moving forward' that they don't bother checking what's in front of them. Sometimes you have to stop, change direction, or even go back a bit & find a better way. A few quotes from GK Chesterton sums up the 'majority's' attitude:
# "My attitude toward progress has passed from antagonism to boredom. I have long ceased to argue with people who prefer Thursday to Wednesday because it is Thursday." - New York Times Magazine, 2/11/23
# "Men invent new ideals because they dare not attempt old ideals. They look forward with enthusiasm, because they are afraid to look back." - What's Wrong With The World, 1910
# "The modern world is a crowd of very rapid racing cars all brought to a standstill and stuck in a block of traffic." - ILN, 5/29/26
# "Comforts that were rare among our forefathers are now multiplied in factories and handed out wholesale; and indeed, nobody nowadays, so long as he is content to go without air, space, quiet, decency and good manners, need be without anything whatever that he wants; or at least a reasonably cheap imitation of it." - Commonwealth, 1933
I think the bolded quote is the most relevant to the discussion. Shall we burn all the old books next, or just scribble swear words in them 'cos that's how people speak now (or will speak tomorrow).
Where are we 'moving forward' to? Where do you want to get to so fast that you're prepared to destroy everything you've been given? GKC also wrote:
# "Progress should mean that we are always changing the world to fit the vision, instead we are always changing the vision." - Orthodoxy, 1908
Do you actually have any idea of where you want to get to, or are you planning on just constantly 'moving forward'?
Has it ever crossed your mind that you might be mistaken, & that you might actually be facing the wrong way, & really be 'moving backward', or just going round & round in ever decreasing circles? It seems to me that this approach of knocking things down to replace them with other things that you procede to knock down, etc, etc, etc, is a waste of time, money & resources & merely reflects a childish mindset.
