After over 13 years in France we are now considering returning to the UK. We are considering the Woodhouse area but need to know a lot more about it. Shops, Pubs, Security. As we are in our late 50's we would prefer an area suitable. Any comments or other area suggestions welcome. My wife does originate from North Derbyshire hence Sheffield is a good choice. We commence our property search in 2 weeks time. Thank you, Martin

Hi martin, i dont know too much of Woodhouse but understand there are good parts and bad parts. If you're looking at that end of the city, also consider Beighton/Sothall/Owlthorpe/Mosborough.

Hi Martin would pm you but think you have to have 5 posts.

I moved to Woodhouse 3 mths ago and find it very suitable for my requirements. As youwhatref said there are some nice places adjoining Woodhouse all depending on your personal needs. There are on the Forum quite a few members who live here and you will probabley find they know more than me.

Hi Martin,

Try and avoid buying down too close to the bottom of station road, woodhouse mill.
The odour is not too nice on hot sunny days if the wind is in the wrong direction, due to sewage works. LOL
Try buying in walking distance to Crystal peaks shopping centre
Otherwise most areas are Ok

Hi Martin,
In my opinion Woodhouse village is quite nice, but try and avoid the Sevenside or Badger estates.

Welcome to SheffieldForum

Here's a few threads to give you a bit of background on the place...
http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/search.php?searchid=561968

They are currently building a retirement village on Station Rd in Woodhouse, which will also contain facilities for use by those who live outside of the new development (or so rumour has it).

The train station runs trains to Sheffield and Meadowhall hourly, delivering you to Sheff in 10 mins, and M'hall in 20. Crystal Peaks is still undergoing expansion, so local shopping facilities are still improving.

The local police station is also expanding, with 13 officers (at last count) working from this location. Whenever I phone them, they seem to turn up quite quickly  We also have CCTV in the centre of the village (reputedly), and I've seen coppers on mountain bikes round here too.

We are surrounded by open fields, the old sewage treatment works on stone lane is now a nature reserve, the old landfill site sandwiched between Woodhouse and Beighton is being capped over and developed as a nature habitat too. aerial photo (http://www.multimap.com/map/photo.cgi?client=public&X=442000&Y=385000&scale=25000&width=700&height=400&gride=442139.423945059&gridn=384875.238590289&lang=&db=freegaz&coordsys=gb)

There's more buses run through here than through the interchange in town (exaggeration, but you know what I mean ;) ), a couple of restaurants, a choice of pubs, a decent enough sized co-op supermarket, a choice of independent gyms - including dance classes, a very active parish council, christmas markets every year.....

Have I missed anything?

PS - it's severnside and the badger estates to avoid ;)

Hello everyone and thank you for all the replies.
I am considering the severnside estate but really would like to speak to someone actually living on that estate or knows it very well. I had been told that the Badger estate was iffy in parts but I do like to check them out myself as things can change, often for the better, sometimes for the worse.

Martinmartins51 i live on the severnside estate and i would advice you not to even consider it ,i am desperately trying to get off here,it is a hellhole i can tell you,i used to live on the badger too and compared to severnside i would live on the badger anyday,if you have a car have a few trips round at night and at weekends to see for yourself, but as i say i would not touch it.also the houses are rank.

Try using http://www.neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk/dissemination/

You can put in a post code and find out detailed information about an area. Unfortunately it only has things like crime at a city wide level, but other things like property prices, demographics, education levels and relative deprivation indices are broken down to ward and area level.

Woodhouse is nice, but I;d avoid the Badger / goathland estates like the plague. i lived there for 9 years and it was awful, but it was like a completely different area when you left that estate, it was wierd.

THe only things really wrong with severnside is the little scrotes that come from other parts of Woodhouse on moto cross bikes / mini moto's etc.

To get to the woods they go flying straight past my house and can get a little noisy (especially the little swine learning to pull wheelies on the slight hill outside my front door  )

Oh yeah, dont forget the wannabee hoodies hanging around - they dont bother me though.

Most of my neighbours are o.a.p's, we say hello in passing etc.
They did ASSUME we would be neighbours from hell when we moved in - 3 young kids, large motorcycle parked up....you get the picture.

However, they had never had a problem with us, in fact one of them may have saved my families lives one night.

The boiler started kicking out black smoke in the early hours of the morning so she rang the fire brigade and came banging on the door to wake my wife up (I was at work) turns out it was nothing serious but you never know...

I like my neighbours, its just a pity that everyone cant be as nice.
