Does anybody know much about Herries road, the part heading towards Hillsborough and just past Tesco. Most of the houses seem to be privately owned and well maintained with decent cars parked in the drives (I realise this is not the best criteria to judge an area/street on). The area (Southey Green) obviously isn't the greatest but what about this particular part?
Any info will be greatly appreciated.
I have just realised, the only time I post on this site is to ask for opinions! I apologise for this, it seems every where I pick to look at hasn't had much discussion on here in the past. Unless I am really bad at searching.
All of my spare time at the minute is spent looking for a house, otherwise I would post more regularly on here to give others advice based on what I have found over the last few months. I promise I will once I find somewhere!!
I pass thru' Herries Rd regularly and I know the area you mean.
It does look ok but it is sandwiched 'tween 2 dodgy looking areas. Have you thought about looking in Hillsboro'? There are some really lovely streets on the high side and they are well maintained. Hillsboro' sometimes gets an unfair press. It can be a bit rough on the main road at nights but it is very family orientated and popular. I don't know your budget so it's difficult to suggest anything.
Budget is very restricted, actually had an offer accepted on a property in that area now, just off herries road. I have done as much research as I can and obviously got very mixed opinions on the area. I know the general areas is known as one of the worst in Sheffield but people who actually live there have said they haven't ever had any trouble. The particular steet also looks ok and is mainly privately owned now.
Anyone looking for a house in Sheffield should consider some of the less liked areas as if you look hard enough you will find parts that really are ok. I kept saying to myself that just because an area has a bad reputation it can't all be bad, especially if it is a very large area. Most people have warned me about more or less the whole of North Sheffield, but logic tells you it can't all be the hell hole some people make it out to be.

I'm in the process of buying a house in Longley (almost literally across the road from Southey Green) should be moving in next week.
I'm basically of the same opinion as you, I'm a little bit apprehensive about what the area is going to be like, but like you say the area looks reasonable enough and the whole of North Sheffield can't be all that bad.
Anyway, I will keep you posted on how things go!

I live just off Herries road, more towards the five arches pub (shirecliffe end), and i can say that in the 4 years since i moved back onto the estate we have had no problems at all.
I know at the Tesco area there are people hanging around shops at night but from what i have been told they hasn't been much trouble in the last couple of years.
I lived in HIllsborough for a year around 5 years ago, and everything was fine for the first 6 months or so, then we had some trouble, people coming into the back yard to have Sex ( yes i caught two people at it in my doorway around 2'oclock in the morning) and then a few weeks later found a couple of syringes in the yard, the firm at the top of our drive getting burgled in the early evening. so we decided to move back to where i came from.
The reason we left Shirecliffe to move to Hillsborough was because of the trouble, but it seems the trouble followed us.
My partners cousin lives on Hawthorn Road in Hillsborough and last week during the day she had her back door kicked in, apparently by School kids, so i feel wherever you go there will always be trouble.
That sounds encouraging and does follow the pattern of people who actually live in the area saying it is fine. That actually sounds quite close to where I am buying. Am I right in thinking Herries road is pretty much the boundry between Southey Green and Shirecliffe at that end of it?
I don't know Sheffield very well at all as I have only lived here a year, in a rented house in Gleadless/Herdings, so it is really difficult to make judgements. I have got the impression that most of North Sheffield has a bad reputation. Is this mainly due to it been mostly council housing, which rightly or wrongly, usually gives an area a bad reputation?

I get the keys on Friday (touch wood) and the big day will be Saturday. Don't think its sunk in yet! will give a progress report on developments.
Chatted to a couple of locals when I went over to have a look at the place with my parents, they seemed nice enough, but they said there were some right a**holes live round there, but that the overwhelming majority of people round there are nice enough.
