OK time for one of the evil docs bizare social theories! And, as I'm sure will become clear, I'm in no way a social scientist!

Like probably a fairly large proportion of the UK I'm a nominal christian, i.e. I was raised christian (in my case Roman Catholic) but no longer practice. It seems that our interperitation of practicing a religion involves going to church for an hour every week - and even people who do that are considered 'religious nuts' and 'god botherers'. Given this premise, although the UK is often considered to be a christian country its actualy a pretty secular one with religion being a minority persuit at best. Strong religious views seem to be looked upon with suspicion. If this is the case could that be some of the reson for the current fear of and witch hunt against 'Islamic extremists' - while we can understand from our secular viewpoint fighting and dying for wealth, power or any other temporal bonus we simply don't understand the mindset that considers faith important enough to fight and die for?

Discuss!
