Pritt Stick 10-05-2006, 14:06 Whoa Nelly! Just back it up a bit and start again a little more slowly. scottf 10-05-2006, 15:42 never heard of any- why do you ask? Kana213 10-05-2006, 19:11 Sorry, Im a freelance producer for Japanese TV. Am trying to do a story about racism and football, and hoping to focus on all the work that's been done on it by a Sheffield based organisation that's worked on anti racism. I'd like to talk about the success they've had in the past ten years, but need to find out what specifically happend to make ppl come up with an organisation like this... Appreciate if you could help in any way... tosh13 10-05-2006, 19:40 Sheffield United are part of Show Racism The Red Card and have been for quite a few years,we are a family club. I assume the organisation you are looking for is "Football Unites, Racism Divides" (FURD) whose motto is "It's only the colour of the shirt that matters" PT howeyz 10-05-2006, 22:38 Sorry, Im a freelance producer for Japanese TV. There has hardly been any racism in football for 20 years. The large number of black players coming into the game and representing all clubs has been the main reason. Due to alcohol being consumed before a game and the large numbers attending you will always have a minority of racists in a crowd who make themselves heard but no more than in society in general. The kick racism out of football has been a good source of income for a number of people so will always find a vehicle to keep it going. The more players from differant ethnic backgrounds that come into the game the less racism there will be. syko1979 11-05-2006, 07:59 I haven't heard any for years. Up to about 3 years ago I used to take my mixed race nephews to the matches and never had any problems. scottf 11-05-2006, 10:45 thinking about it- early to mid ninties was deane and agana's prime time so there definately woun't have been that much abuse around as everyone worshipped them!!!! Ousetunes 11-05-2006, 11:10 Although slightly off topic (as you're asking about the surrounding ethnic communities around the lane and not the club or visiting club's players) I recall how unsavioury racism became in the mid-to-late 80s. I think you cannot underestimate the effect that players like Deane and Agana had in changing people's attitudes toward black players. Sometime around 1986 Manchester City visited the lane in one of the most boring 0-0 bore draws I've ever witnessed. In goal for city was a rarity, a black goalkeeper. The abuse that guy received was about as low as it could get (including the throwing of fruit onto the pitch, which I'll leave to you to decide which sort). Fortunately, firstly with the signing of Richard Cadette, then Bassett's masterstroke of pairing Deane and Agana up front changed the attitudes of many a fickle supporter or at least suppressed the attitudes of others, putting the racist core into the minority (a turnaround in itself!). Football to its credit has moved on giant strides since. Players like Thierry Henry get applause from opposing fans because they are respected so much for their sheer skills and in Henry's case his approach to the game generally. Whilst I fully understand the motives of Kick Racism.. and Racism Divides..., I'd like to wonder whether such 'schemes' are really necessary. To a great extent, there is hardly any racism in the game these days and the players come from a rich texture of different social and cultural backgrounds, possibly more so than in any other sport or in everyday life (that's you and I, mate). To me, football has won its racist argument; society in general is where a 'scheme' like Kick Racism...should now be headed (no football pun intended). scottf 11-05-2006, 11:25 I agree ousetunes but i thought that kick racism out of football was a europe-wide organisation- in other countries such as spain and the former soviet block countries there is still lots and lots of racist abuse to minority players. There is hardly any racism in football towards the players definately but how many players with a pakistani or indian background can you name in the english leagues?? i think there should be far more than there are! howeyz 11-05-2006, 17:56 There is an Asian referee in the football league and on his visit to Hillsborough this season received no abuse at all.And that's a referee. That i'm sorry to say would not have been the case even 10 years ago never mind the 80's. happyhippy 13-05-2006, 11:27 There is an Asian referee in the football league and on his visit to Hillsborough this season received no abuse at all.And that's a referee. That i'm sorry to say would not have been the case even 10 years ago never mind the 80's. Sorry to be pedantic, but Gurnam Singh was the official at the Lane in a match between United and Bradford (I think the mighty Blades won 3-0) and the only chanting towards the ref (who, as I recall had a good game) was when he was poleaxed by an attempted clearance, and was down for a good couple of minutes. That was at least 10 years ago. I actually don't remember that much racial abuse at the Lane to be honest, but there must have been something or Howard and the rest of the crew wouldn't have set up FURD. tosh13 13-05-2006, 11:46 Kana 213 has dissapeared 1 post & that's it. lesbaxby 14-05-2006, 10:22 I have only heard racial abuse once at Bramall Lane in the mid-nineties, and the offender was reprimanded by those around him immediately. Unlike at Hillsboro, where, according to friends of mine who go there say its rife. I recall last season against Brentford in the play offs 3 Wednesdayites, live on tv, were doing 'monkey signs' to the Brentford centre half. Also in the derby at Swillsboro Wednesdayites gave Adi Akinbyi similar treatment. Appalling in the year 2006 in my eyes. |
