View Full Version : Grave Yard in Hillsborough
Hi, I'm a journalism student at the university and I have Hillsborough find some stories. I'm interested in tha grave yard behind the dog track where all that waste land is. Does anyone know anything interesting about it?
If not then if you can think of any other news/ stories about anything weird/ wonderful/ sad or annoying then please let me know.
Would greatly appreciate any information. But i can't work this PM thing out so if responses could be posted to the forum that would be great!
Thanks

crookesey 10-05-2006, 14:18 Try the repositioned grave stones in the wall at the top of Hillsborough Barracks as well. A Waterloo survivor is there if my memory serves me and is worded in the same way as Thomas Sands gravestone in The General Cemetry, Cemetery Road.
There's also the old grave yard at the top of the Scraithwood estate. Sorry I don't know it's name but there some really old graves in there. Spooky!!!
To get in you either go right to the top of the estate as far as you can go and there is a little walkway, or you can also get in from one of the roads behind bassetts

That is the Wards end cemetery the one behind the dog track.
Jabberwocky 10-05-2006, 19:57 I read somewhere that the Graveyard near the railway line has several victims of the sheffield floods in it.
FairyNormal 10-05-2006, 20:00 A lot of the people buried there are very young children. The gravestones make interesting but very sad reading.
Plain Talker 10-05-2006, 20:02 The "pm- thing" will not work until you have made a minimum of five posts, unfortunately.

I take it that's because he was'nt dead
I take it that's because he was'nt dead
Correct! :D
sorry
Though it looks overgrown, there is quite often fresh flowers on some of the graves, I quite often used to use the footpath as a shortcut to the top of the hill when I worked at Abrafract in the 80's / 90's. never knew what it was called though.
nanrobbo 15-05-2006, 10:52 Would the Wards end Cemetery be the one behind Shirecliffe School of the 1940's? We kids used to go down the Meadow in lunchtime. Sometimes we 'borrowed' flowers from graves to put on the graves of babies. It was quite an old graveyard even then.
Hey, thanks for all your help! I looked at the Friends of Wardsend cemetary home page, and that is packed with lots of useful information. I am going to visit there this saturday, they do tours of the graveyard and other things.
I've worked this PM thing out now so if anyone wants to PM me with quotes about the area (behind hillsborough dog track) that would be great.
Thanks again.

I've lived in Hillsborough since I were a lad and never took the time to go down here.
Until today when I ventured down with my Canon EOS 20D to try and get some pictures..
It's a strange and sad place, all overgrown and run down with the area at the bottom of the hill sporting the strangest set of traffic lights you are ever likely to see.
The graves are seriously damaged and one was even open ! *shudder*
I got some cracking pictures - will post the link when I've uploaded them..
*tip - if you are going, go in a group as it's not the safest area*
WallBuilder 18-02-2007, 19:40 I took some pics in the summer of 2005

Not quite sure whether I found the place slightly eerie or just atmospheric
Sheffielder 18-02-2007, 20:47 Good pictures - I agree about the atmosphere there, it's very strange.
When you think just how many people are under the ground and how unhappy they must be with the state of the place..

Check up on the Sheffield bodysnatchers that took quite a few bodies from there in league with the warden who was charged with the offence.
In its day there was quite a stink about it in the newspapers and the feelings of the locals.
There is also a grave of a sergeant who served at O'Rourkes Drift in the South Africa Campaign.
Plenty for you to research and write about there.
Happy Days!
kensimmo 19-02-2007, 09:15 We used to play Ouija on a gravestone.

Sheffielder 19-02-2007, 11:04 Does anyone know where I can source information on the bodysnatchers ?
Plain Talker 19-02-2007, 11:19 there is quite a good (and lengthy!!!) thread, elsewhere on the forum about Wardsend, with a link to some newspaper article(s) about the bodysnatching.
This thread (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=112252) I think

Dead people can't hurt you.
It's them that's living you have to worry about.:)
Sheffielder 21-02-2007, 11:12 Yeah but looking at some of the open graves there it seems that some of the poor residents have been going out for walks..
fridgeman 21-02-2007, 13:10 walked home through here from work on saturday took a couple of photos, would post them only i aint got a clue how to.

Apparently on some Saturday afternoons thousands of strange people go there around 3pm

not me i were int pub at that time, i walked through at 12 ish, it were spooky even then.
Sheffielder 21-02-2007, 16:42 It's a spooky place.
The spookiest place I've been recently to take pictures for my website is Thornseat Lodge.
That's got to be the scariest place in the area..
That and the old Middlewood Hospital..
:o :o :o
My grandad is meant to be buried there- died 1962 just before I was born- I was told the graveyard was really badly maintained so have never ventured near it
Not only badly maintained katkin, but a gravestone has actually been chiselled in half, vertically, to allow for the erection of the fence alongside the railway tracks ........ not moved over a foot or so and preserved ..... chiselled in half!!! :(
Eric_Collins 22-02-2007, 22:15 i used to go into this area daily for work as well as scrapping on the tip for 'extra' cash. The area's always been in a state ever since i can remember. We use to goto the car scrap yard alot too @ back of bassetts and near the power station. Alot of graves are wooded over with thick bush/woodland area.
I didn't notice however any items ever being left at any graveside such as flowers or trinkets ect.... I did notice late 80's early 90's that alot of graves had been uncoverd and tamperd with. Alot of stones and earns found the way onto or around the rail track. Worring thought realy :suspect:

It was always said that the abandoned church was used for witchcraft ceremonies.
I have no proof only that there used to be pentangles etc drawn on the inside walls but these could have been youths fooling around.
I wonder!
Disturbing Days!
crookesey 23-02-2007, 13:34 Does anyone know if the grave stone of the red indian buried there is still standing? There was another one buried in an old cemetery near to where the Arena is situated, all gone now I'm afraid.
Native American tribes will move heaven and earth to have their lost ancestors remains shipped back to the states and reburied.
gularscute 24-02-2007, 15:32 What's the best way of getting to it from Hillsborough? I've never been and want to go and have a look around.

Hi Sheffielder, What is the best way to get into the Wardsend Cemetry by road i have looked at the access behind Bassets up the steps but it looks a bad place to leave a car, plus my old legs dont like going to far, hope you can help?? Thanks in advance Syrup.
Sheffielder 24-02-2007, 16:30 Hi there,
It's a very bad place to leave the car - I've done it twice and each time been scared that it won't be there when I get back !
There's a few access points to the cemetary (about 6 I believe) but that's the only one I've used.
You can come down the hill from Shiregreen but it's extremely steep and of course there's the walk back up.
There's also access from the city side near Neepsend but I've not tried that either.
I know there's access from the Herries Road end but don't know the way to that either (sorry !)
I would definitely consider taking someone with you as it's not the nicest of areas.
Greybeard 24-02-2007, 18:29 What's the best way of getting to it from Hillsborough? I've never been and want to go and have a look around.
It used to be possible to get there via Livesey Street which runs round the back of Owlerton Stadium. There's a bridge over the river and the road used to lead to a car breakers yard on the left with a path up past this to the grave yard.
There's also a footpath down from Penrith road that takes you via a footbridge over the railway line.
Sheffielder 24-02-2007, 18:32 That's the entrance that Syrup is talking about.
Not a nice area - Coopers scrapyard is still there I think, and it's definitely not a good idea to leave the car there.
One idea may be to park either outside the Bassett's entrance or even in the Owlerton Stadium carpark and walk around to the cemetary ?
Bit of a walk, but safer to leave your car there - definitely
The bottom entrance is fascinating, as the traffic lights (although smashed in) still work and change to a pattern to stop the non existant traffic !
this was my bro & i roaming ground in late 46 ,lighting little fires behind the graves at midnight & waiting for the ghosts to raise fm the dead, its seemed a long walk back to Penistone rd at 2in the morn for 10 &11 yr olds.
weeresmepint 26-02-2007, 15:29 there is a way in off herries road just below the rail bridge, go down the steps at the side of the stream and walk up the hill in front of you the grave yard starts on your right
Sheffielder 26-02-2007, 15:36 That will be where they filmed the burial scene in the 70's comedy "I didnt' know you cared"
weeresmepint 26-02-2007, 15:45 oh yes i remember that being filmed, i lived on penrith road at the time

I am almost certain that a native american indian was burried in there.

yes I think you are right.
We used to call it boot hill when we were kids. I was in there last year looking for an ancestors headstone while doing my family tree. Its deadly in there (pun intended) and many of the headstones still standing are leaning and in danger of falling over. If you get caught under one of those its curtains (pun intended).
I was up there one Saturday afternoon and was approached by four hoodies who soon scarpered when they saw the cold steel machete I was waving about.
I did email 'friends of wardsend a couple of times and I never got a reply, so don't expect too much help from them.

Did you find your gravestone ? The monumental inscriptions were recorded by the Sheffield and District Family History Society in the late 70s or early 80s. I helped with it on a couple of occasions.
Not sure where the records are now,- probably Sheffield Archives; worth checking if you're still looking for someone buried there.

No I never found her headstone but the vegatation made it impossible to check loads of headstones, some of them were totally covered. I have the death cert and burial record at St Philips. I know she's in there because St Philips graveyard shut 1857 and she died 1860.
Cheers for the info Greybeard.

Having talked to a member of the Friends of the Cemetery I am convinced that the idea that this man (Paul Eagle Star) was buried in Wardsend is a myth.
He was injured in Sheffield. By the time he died the Show had left Sheffield. The body of this man was taken to Brompton in London where there was a more permanant encampment from which they were travelling to different parts of the country for the shows. He was buried in a cemetery there. Apparently, in the last few years his remains were taken back to America and interred in a reservation there.
There is a reference to these events here (http://www.49thparallel.bham.ac.uk/back/issue14/gair.htm): an article which is about references to 'red indians' in the Sherlock Holmes stories.

I am not a member of the Friends, but with their permission I have been working to make some better plans of the site. If you would like to post or pm me the names and dates you were looking for I will do my best to locate them in the cemetery.
Hugh
There is a Lt George Lambert from Market Hill in County Armagh buried in Wardsend and he won the V.C. during the Indian Mutiny 1858, a very brave man.

That's very kind of you and much appreciated Hugh.
She died under the name Sophia Holden, age 56, on the 20th November 1860 and was buried 25th November 1860. Her burial number at St. Philips is 1475. John Livesey performed the ceremony.
On her burial sheet there are two numbers and one letter which I presume is her burial plot/location.
The numbers are (probably) '7' and '64' and the letter may be the old style of writing for the letter 'Q', but it looks like a '2'. I can't post the sheet here though because of copyright.
Many thanks,
Regards,
Andy
I haven't worked out what those single digit numbers are  , but the reference does sound like Q64 - those Q's are very like '2's! I assume that letter is above the address in the entry.
I know where plot Q64 is. As far as I know there isn't a gravestone. I noted a gravestone on grave Q66, and one on Q89, which would be directly behind 64, but not one on 64 itself. But, I don't have a full plan of that section yet and there is always the possiblilty of low level or fallen stonework in the undergrowth.
There are no HOLDENs in the index to the Monumental Inscriptions published by the Family History Society, but again that index is incomplete (they missed lots of inscriptions).
I will take a closer look next time I am in the cemetery.
Hugh
Ok, thank you for checking.
Yes, the 'Q' is in the 'abode' column, the '7' is in the 'name' column, and the '64' is in the 'when buried' column.
My cousin found this link some time ago which helps deciper Victorian scribble...

I believe some graves were moved to Wardsend Cemetery from the graveyard at St Philip's Church when it was demolished to make way for the new road system.
