I'm hoping to move from Dagenham in Essex to Sheffield in the near future and I was wondering if anyone who is with the Sheffield City Council can tell me how the Housing Register system works.

From what I did understand once you join the register the council write to you and give you a pin number and then you go onto this Sheffield Property Shop website and bid for properties, I am not sure if you have to be on the register for a certain amount of time in order to bid, but I was told you can bid for as many Council properties as you like.

Can you tell me what happens after you bid, and how its determined you were sucessful in your bid? & What time scale does this process usually take, weeks, months, years?

Down south we have a points system and you only get a max of 2 properties to choose from and if you dont like any of them they make you wait another 5 years how mad is that.

The housing method in Sheffield seems alot more simpler and the choice of areas and houses are a lot more vast, but is it too good to be true, is being housed in Sheffield really that easy or am I deluding myself, surely there has to be a catch somewhere.

Is there anyone that can give me some more info, it would be much appreciated.

Regards

Joanne

You get so many points to bid with depending on how many you have, eg you get one fir each year you are on the list. I know you get points in other ways, but I'm not sure how.

The website is here:

Thanks for your reply, I found a helpline number today for the property shop in Sheffield and they said the same thing you just said, but thanks anyway.
