Hi guys, I know, another place about a city centre flat!

Actually I've just signed a lease for a flat in wards brewery and was wondering how do I set up cable connection (do I have to use sky, or can I get natwest? which ones better), and how do I get a broadband connection (blundel gave me an info pack on ask4.com, do have to use them?)? I know these are real basic questions but I just got to the UK and I am not sure how these things work here. Also can anyone on here recommend a carpet cleaner?

Can anyone that has lived or are living in Wards brewery, give some heads up on the area, and what the flats are like to live in (is there a lot of noisy people/students in there), I know this is a question I should have asked ealier, but better late than never right?

Thanks guys!

first of all looking its telewest not natwest and it depends if cable is in the area but if you have a phone line then any broadband that you have used before can be installed depends on your preference

oops, sorry I meant telwest! I think the agent said something about there being cable in there, does that mean that I have to use a specific carrier? do I just call them to activate the services, or do I have to buy a box? Thanks again

I think it depends where abouts in Wards you live. I live in wards, and have been quite lucky with having quiet neighbours. Sometimes people do decide to have parties on their balcony though which can get quite noisy! Luckily my flat doesnt look over the new building site nextdoor either! I think its a mix of students and young professionals living in the flats though.

Thanks for the insight! which building are you in? and how do you like the area?

I'm in coopers house so i overlook the brook and underground car park. I've rented there now for about 1 1/2 years now and have just bought a flat there too so it cant be that bad if i'm still there! I guess it's personal preference but i much prefer living in Wards Brewery instead of alot of the city centre flats i have seen. It's still only 5 minutes walk from town, but then also just a few minutes walk to Ecclesall Road / Encliffee Park.

I lived in Wards Brewery for 9 months until January (was only meant to be a temporary home) and used Ask 4. They're not the cheapest broadband provider but they have the benefits of being installed in the building already and you don't have to pay a set up fee as well as a 7-day notice period to end the service rather than being tied in for x months.
I enquired about Sky but I don't think you're allowed to put up a digi-dish.
I ended up buying a freeview box for £30 and it worked fine.
I found it to be a really quiet place except when people were arguing in the corridors outside the flats or coming in drunk from nights out! I couldn't really hear noise from other flats.
Location-wise it was perfect as i only had a 10 minute walk to work.
Hope you enjoy it.

I live there myself in the Granary. I think they are pretty good apartments, much better than West 1 and the others dead central. As for the services they all have BT lines, are broadband ready (just plug an ethernet cable in and open your browser and you'll get the Ask4 sign up screen) and there is a communal dish for receiving Sky.

hahah "dead central". So do we have to use sky and ask4.com? can I get telwest, and another ISP? Thanks guys, keeping the comments coming!

Yes I think we're stuck with Sky for the television as there's no extra installation work needed but as regards the internet you could use any ADSL broadband provider. I just went with Ask4 because there was no need for line testing which can drag on for weeks.

I see on telwest's website that there are no installation charges, does this mean that they will install it and we can get telwest? Sorry about these basic questions! Thanks again

just hijacking this thread a little but can anyone tell me about how to contact someone who rents out apartments in Wards Brewery?

I think it’s because its a managed building they wont allow the extra work needed as they already have the services in place. The concierge could give you a definite answer though, his phone number is 0114 2725511.

Blundells have a fair few flats to rent in wards brewery. In fact the one i rent at the moment in wards is available to rent asap as i am moving out in the next week or two!

When I was looking it seems that blundells were the only one that had any available. Give them a try. I'll call the concierge once I've moved in. Also, when is the concierge in? I've never seen him/her there. As well anyone know of a good carpet cleaner (actual company)Thanks for the other info,

Thanks for the info on Ward's Brewery, keep it up!

I looked at a couple of apartments via Spencers but the one I chose was via Blundells. I wouldn't rate them as an agency though as they took their fee but nothing was actually done as agreed by the time I moved in and thus ended up Liaising with the Landlord myself.

You can usually catch Des between 9 and 12; any other time can sometimes be a bit hit and miss as he’s often busy elsewhere.

As for the carpet cleaning I've heard that 2 fat strips of double sided sticky tape on both soles of your feet and a 20 minute jog does them wonders.

As for the services they all have BT lines

Not true - I enquired about a phone line and BT were going to charge £70 odd to install a line as the previous occupiers hadn't done so. Wasn't worth me doing for a temporary stay.

I see on telwest's website that there are no installation charges, does this mean that they will install it and we can get telwest? Sorry about these basic questions! Thanks again

I'm 99% sure that you won't be able to get Telewest. Check their website to make sure.

we're moving into ward's in a few weeks & we're hoping to get Sky's basic package for £21pm & also broadband through talk talk for £20pm, does anyone know if this will be possible? or will I have to go with someone in particular?

Cheers :)
