View Full Version : Silver ring movement coming over from America
What does everyone think about the silver ring movement coming over from America. For those who don't know,it is sort of like a youth group where people make a promise of chastity untill they marry and are given a silver ring as a symbol of this promise.Apparently people can "have lots of wholesome fun with all the atmosphere of a nightclub"!
Sam Miguel 12-05-2004, 15:24 I haven't heard anything about it until now, and I think it sounds barmy.
Apparently all the mums are for it and it works really well in America.I don't think i'll be enrolling!
mimicraze 12-05-2004, 15:29 i think its cool, my friend rachel has never kissed a boy and is waiting till marraige for it all, never mind her virginity.
each to their own, i cudnt do it, too randy. but i did try tho.

I don't agree with it.It puts far too much pressure on a marriage.I agree with waiting for someone you care about but not to the extreme.
mimicraze 12-05-2004, 15:32 no i get ya, its fine tho as long as its the persons chopice not their parents, which most of the time it is :)
their bloody mad but leave em to it! lol
It's too late for me anyway, although it is still possible to reform and join the group, sort of being like a born-again virgin without the stitches!I saw all this on the bbc news,it's true!
mimicraze 12-05-2004, 15:36 i was a born again virgin but damnit i just couldnt help it.
why would anyone join, and if they did, what's to stop them cheating?
Haha, i like it.People actually do get sewn up again, not in the silver ring thing but can you imagine how painful! All for it to be torn open again. What's the point,it's not as if they hang the bloodied sheets out the window anymore!
Cyclone, people join partly from pressure from their parents and partly as a backlash against pregnancy, diseases etc. It's their way of rebelling,as for cheating god knows how they'd check!
Sam Miguel 12-05-2004, 15:49 It's just another 'flavour-of-the-month' crackpot American idea that should be totally ignored.
Mark my words.
Proper mentalists. They preach that having sex with someone puts a barrier between you and god. And that condoms do nothing to stop sexually transmitted disease. The Indy said today that 88% of kids who sign up to this have sex anyway, and most of them don't use condoms because they have been indoctrinated against disease.
This is the movement that the Bush administration supports over rational education. Can't see them getting too far with British youth, though
with all the ripping, sewing & tearing they should rename it and call it 'The Red Ring'.
Actually, hold on . . . I get one of those after a night of Tindaloo's!?
There is a nice piece on the silver ring movement here :
http://www.guardian.co.uk/religion/Story/0,2763,1212984,00.html
Rings available for only a tenner each - or 15 Euros in Dublin
Details of the UK tour [by some 30 members of the movement] can be found here :

Interesting idea........they're going to have a battle on their hands though.
Good luck to 'em.
I prefer the idea of straight edge whereby people don't drink, do drugs and do not have promiscuous sex - its linked with the punk scene and just sounds a lot more cool than silver ring.
Just looked at the Guardian article,it all looks very scary and cult-like.This might not be the case but it's the feeling i get.As i said earlier i don't agree that it's best to wait for marriage although it is a good idea to wait for someone that you care about.Young people having sex too early is usually related to self-esteem issues, something should be done to combat this instead, rather than saying that sex is dirty.
Could be worse. They could try to reduce teenage pregnancies but starting up a brown ring movement.
fnkysknky 13-05-2004, 09:57 Loony Americans with their crackpot ideas again :loopy:
What a load of rubbish. I dont think most people have ever really waited till their weadding night.
Though its not a good thing for kids to have promiscuous, unpritected sex, Im sure there are very few people on this forum who have not experienced the joy of sex in a loving relationship and did not get married.
Most of us are the wayward youngsters that are being talked about who regretted our first times. The silver ring thing seems to be trying get the next lot of kids.
A.B.Yaffle 13-05-2004, 12:37 I won't be joining for several reasons... lol!
But I don't understand why everyone is so negative about new ideas just because they aren't for them personally! Nobody is forcing you lot to join, and to those that do try it... good luck and I hope it works!
mimicraze 13-05-2004, 12:41 i think its fine, its been going on for yrs, this kind of thing, its not a new culty American idea, people are just valueing their virginity. i know many ppl that feel the same and are really serious about it, and with some their parents have nothing to do with it. i think good on them, whats the harm anyway? I did try like i said and i took it seriously but being an nymph got in the way really lol

fnkysknky 13-05-2004, 13:00 Because personally I think that waiting until you're married before having sex is a completely retarded idea - sex isn't everything in a relationship but it is definitely a big part. What happens if you get married only to find you both hate each other in bed.
