Hi
I picked up a Sheffield Galleries booklet recently and read that they do life drawing classes on Wed and Thurs evenings. Just wondered if anyone on here has been and could tell me what its like? I did some drawing at college many years ago and I am a bit rusty but would like to start up again and improve my skills. Is there a tutor on hand to give advice? Also it mentions you need to take your own materials so would like to know what people usually take with them? Oh and where exactly in the Gallery does the class take place?

I am also interested in doing general art classes not just life drawing if anyone knows anywhere in Sheffield that does them. (Would have to be evening or weekend classes though).

Thanks in Advance

Caroline :)

I've not been to the life drawing class Caroline but as part of my degree we had two sessions on figure and face drawing. If the same people are involved I should imagine the quality of teaching and support would be very high.
Materials wise I'd suggest you invest in some good quality pencils from 5H to 5B and a pad of decent cartridge paper.
When I was there we used a room downstairs near the foot of the escalator. Hope you go along and enjoy it. The library may be able to help with regard to information re other classes. Good luck.

They're good classes though often quite crowded and don't have the most social atmosphere. There is a tutor that goes around and makes comments, and gives advice if you want it.

Paper can be bought at the sessions for 10p a sheet. Most importantly bring soft pencils (better for quick sketches, the hardest I use is 2b), a sharpener, masking tape if you plan to use an easel and a putty eraser that works well with a lot of pencil dust. There are ususally a few 10 minute sketches or shorter and then some max 1/2 hr ones and a break in between.

It still takes place at the foot of the escalators right next to the entrance for Cafe Azure. Just give it a try to see if you like it.

Hi Nooka
The classes at the millennium galleries have about three different teachers on different days, so depending who it is you will get different type of class. The Wednesday classes are a bit more more 'taught' these days and sometimes have themes on particular probelms - like drawing the head, or capturing poses- so if you want some tuition they may be your best bet. The thursday ones are more like practise sessions.
They used to be really packed - but now they are on two nights its not so bad.
Good luck with it.
