View Full Version : Wortley Arms; has it reopened?
BasilRathbon 08-05-2006, 11:52 One of my favourite evening cycle rides is out to Wortley and back on a fine summer's evening, which is always enhanced by a couple of pints of the fine real ales at the Wortley Arms.
Last I heard on the forum - around the end of february i think - the Wortley Arms was closed and there was some doubt as to whether it would reopen or not.
Anyone know if it's up and running again?
carcrash 08-05-2006, 12:16 Is that the one with the revolving door.
BasilRathbon 12-07-2006, 10:35 Finally answered my own question last night by cycling up there and sadly no, it hasn't reopened and judging by the state of it, it won't reopen in the near future, if at all.
All the inside appears to have been gutted, there's a skip with a load of rubbish outside and, while the signs are still up, there's no indication as to what the future plans for the place are.
Such a shame - was a really nice real ale and food pub with great views and on a very busy road, so you'd have thought it would attract plenty of custom.
Anyone in the Wortley area know what's likely to become of the place?

that bend is a night mare.
Jabberwocky 12-07-2006, 11:12 Speaking of that bend at wortley. Does that bloke still sit there in the sunshine? He was always there in the summer, sitting on the bench getting slowly baked in the sun. I used to drive through wortley from 1994 until 2002 and every day in the summer, this sun worshipper would be there.
carcrash 13-07-2006, 12:37 it's a pity. I've had some great nights in there whilst working at Wortley hall
BasilRathbon 12-09-2006, 12:22 If anyone (apart from me) is interested, The Barnsley Independent paper reported the other week that the Wortley Arms refurbishment is almost complete and it's expected to re-open sometime in October.

Will Chris Smith be still in as Manager?.
His dad owned the Crossfield Tavern in High Green for years.
fark18sheff 12-09-2006, 16:35 I go to wortley quite reguarly and know the people that run the estate. The pub is set to reopen soon but there was some trouble with the last tennants of the pub. The reopening keeps being put back should be up and running soon. Shame because its a cracking pub!
pippadoll 12-09-2006, 20:01 I travel round the Wortley Bend most days. Haven't seen the old guy sunning himself this year. The new sign is up on the pub and they are making progress. Previous post sums it up.
DarthOwl 13-09-2006, 12:37 Sadly, the sun worshipping guy died a year or so ago.
I think his name was Mark and a new bench has been put up in his honour.
On the subject on the Wortley Arms, I drive past it every day and I hope I'm wrong, but it looks as if it's been given the 'style bar' treatment.
Sandy, neutral coloured walls and halogen lighting being installed....
Noooooooooooooo!
fark18sheff 13-09-2006, 20:31 Heres the low down on the wortley arms. Found out today that it is set to reopen in October! wether or not this will happen is to be seen. The place was falling apart so is being completly revamped. Apparently the upstairs is being converted into a s****y restaurant??? Anyway good news thats it will be serving again.
pippadoll 13-09-2006, 20:58 The Star had an article when it closed for refurbishment that it was going to have a s****y restaurant, moving more up market, with a gastro pub feel. That might explain the cream n beige
carcrash 13-09-2006, 22:00 I ****ing hate gastropubs. Load of poncy ******** ruining good pubs.
carcrash 13-09-2006, 22:00 I do not like gastro pubs
goldenfleece 14-09-2006, 07:27 toasted cheese sandwich any day!!
Casper247 07-01-2007, 14:39 Hey I went to the wortley arms last weekend, Sunday lunch was excellent. Very good chef. And for those who just want a pub well they have that side too. Beer was good. Great place to stop on transpenine cycle route or if you've just had a day out on the craggs. Service in the pub for food is only 'til 5 as per usual but well worth the effort. They have changed upstairs into a posh resteraunt but hey I'd eat downstairs any day. Congrats to them for a great experience. If you want to try them for more info contact number is 0114 2888749.:)
As for those of you who think its a cheesy gastro pub well just dont go there you'd spoil the great experience the next time I go and hey you'll never know what your missing out on. Just continue to drink your fizzy Tetley's and leave us to drink some real ale!!
sufc_tom 19-01-2007, 14:34 Feel a need to bring this thread back up.
Took my girlfriend for her uni interview other week and we was both hungry.
On the way through Penistone I noticed the Wortley Arms and thought it looks a nice little traditional country pub and on way home resisted the temptation of a Subway and held our rumbling stomachs until we pulled in at Wortley.
Walking in, beautiful little building, clean, tidy, authentic decor (even a traditional log fire) and went to the bar for a drink and also picked up a menu.
Noticed all meat and vegetable produce was within a 20 mile radius for improved quality in the food. I ordered a traditional cumberland sausage and mash with vegetables and 'proper' gravy whilst my partner had home made beef lasagne with chips and salad.
Bill including 2 x rounds came to just about 21 pound. Food was gorgeous, rich in flavour, cooked to and in appearance, perfection. Service was good, ordered food from helpful bar staff.
What I would call a 'real pub' with real food. Infact so much so I may book sunday lunch.
Can anyone tell me what the sunday meals are like?
BasilRathbon 19-01-2007, 15:44 I love it when one of the threads I start has a happy ending. :)

Then we rode off into the sunset :)
sufc_tom 21-01-2007, 21:13 Sorry to keep renewing this thread but I have to comment on the sunday lunches they do.
Popped in today for lunch with my girlfriend and a friend. We all had Penistone lamb sunday lunches costing 7.95 each. Absolutely brilliant. Beautiful authentic sunday dinner at a reasonable price and the service we recieved was first class all the way. Thank you to whoever put up the phone number earlier in the thread as it came in very useful today!
If anyone doesn't mind a short drive out for a nice meal, then I couldn't recommend this establishment enough. Great food supplied by great service at a reasonable price.
Mean Kitty 16-02-2008, 22:46 I went for an evening meal with four family members on Friday (15 Feb 08) and was really looking forward to the food, ambience etc, how disappointed I was! We were told that we had to book before 7PM as the night was busy, however on arriving the place was quite empty, the main shock though was the price of the main courses, £14.95 for the fish, monkfish, seabass or salmon, veggie mains were a tenner! We had all decided that we'd not bother with a starter as we didn't want to be "too full" to appreciate the food! I ordered seabass served with a confit of fennel, tomatoes and pesto, when it arrived the food was starter sized, my fish was about 12cm x 5cm and was atop fennel, so tough I wouldn't have given to a rabbit, and 3 halves of semi-grilled tomato! Very disappointing indeed.
The food was mean, meagre and sadly reminiscent of those awful 90s Nouvelle cuisine places, in all honesty had it been half the price it was, you would have still left feeling somewhat cheated and rather hungry. Though Wortley is a somewhat 'monied' area - think house prices etc, it also attracts a lot of walkers and ramblers, as well as 'near locals' such as myself and none are catered for by the highly over-priced fare offered at this once great pub.
If you want good pub food, friendly barstaff and real Sammy Smiths ale (& REAL chips!!) go to the Edmunds Arms in Worsborough Village, they know the score.
