Me and my fella are trying to get that ever elusive first step on the property ladder but it has been proving very difficult, however, we have finally found a house we like (in principal - viewing later this week) in Grimesthorpe - it's affordable, but i have never been out that way.
My question is, does anyone know whether it's well dodgy or whether it's livable???

I am a community worker and part of my patch is Grimesthorpe. i think that it is really nice and when i was looking for a new house eirlier this year looked at quite a few round there - i had no worries about the area.

I've lived in grimesthorpe for the past 5 years, it isn't the cleanest of areas due to problems with fly tipping and general litter. fair play to the council it has improved quite drastically in the past couple of years. there's a "masterplan" for the nearby area of fir vale(back towards the northern general) which will hopefully improve the area further. You do get decent sized house and garden for the money, the reason i initially moved here was that it was cheaper to buy a house than to rent! house is now valued at 3 times if not more than i paid for it. there a re a few bus routes into the city and meadowhall is a 10/15 min walk. there aren't a great deal of local shops although firth park is not far and has a good selection.
Any questions, PM me and i'll do my best to answer.

I've lived here for 18 months and although there aren't a lot of local shops to choose from, with Meadowhell/ Carbrook retail park and Centertainment 10 - 15 minutes walk away you hardly notice

does anyone else have anything to add about Grimesthorpe? My wife and I are going to view a house on Hawkshead Rd with a view to buying and we would really like to know what the area is like.

I know there was some real trouble with the area in 2004, there was a shooting, a kidnapping and one guy went over to iraq and blew himself up as an activist (he apparently went to the mosque on Rothay Road.)

Is the area really that bad?

Hi I live on Hawkshead Rd and stand by the comments I made last year. I hadn't even heard about the issues you mention and we bought here 3 years ago.
I really like the area tho some roads are better than others and we have started a family since moving here which I would't have done if I was worried. HH is a nice, quiet road full of families. My only complaint is the number and frequency of ice cream vans we get but I live with it

Or possibly Page Hall which was put under curfew at the time we were buying our house. A house here is a good investment as houses have increased in price by up to 50% since we bought ours.

Meroveus,
I haven't heard of that most recent incident at all and I have barely left the house recently as I am now overdue with my second baby! I have seen no police, nor have they spoken to me and I heard no gun shots.

The 'suicide bomber' worked at the bottom of the road. I don't really see what this says about the area?
All any of us can give you is our take on the area and road but it seems to me you are determined to look for negatives so I'd probably go with your instincts and look somewhere else :)

Hey Maddy, sorry if I'm coming across that way, I didn't mean to. I'm sure you can understand that buying your first house is a huge commitment and I want to get the location right, so I'm poking around a bunch of areas, not just Grimesthorpe, to see what is bad about the place, my thinking being that the less bad I find, the better the area is.

didn't mean to rub you the wrong way hun.

Sorry am 5 days overdue with 2nd baby so a bit tetchy and hormonal lol! This is our first house so I can understand that you want to thoughly research the options. I am geniunely surprised about that report as I haven't been anywhere for 2 weeks and I haven't seen or heard anything about the incident reported in the star.
Good luck and let m know if we end up as neighbours :D

went to have another poke around today, like everyone has said, it all seemed quiet and no gunshot holes in windows (like the Star report).

Going to view the house tomorrow 2pm (if you see a geezer with long blonde hair walking down the road, wave!)

Lol and if you see a hugely pregnant woman walking up and down the road trying to get labour started wave back :D
Good luck
