burton street was the school just past the chapel up bamforth street...you probably went to that one on clubmill road...the hightlight of my week was when my brother pushed me in the barrow to the gasworks to fetch the coke....i can always remember that hissing sound when you went in and how the sulphur would sting your eyes...it was great going in the barrow ..not so great coming back falling off the top of the coke..

Yes. sorry PT. Just recalled it being named Langsett Music Centre and I believe wind bands and maybe Sheffield Youth Orchestra rehearsed there. I think the head was Mr.Greenlees and I think it is where the perapatetic tutors who came to schools, had their base?

Plain Talker

that sounds about right, chairboy. I seem to remember that one section was for peripatetics, and there was another building, soleley used by we drama students.

My dad (Peter King) was at Burton St School for about 6 months in 1942 before leaving to go to Netheredge. He says the headmaster was called Mr. Bastin. There was also a Mr. Horton. Did you live near Burton Street? Maybe you remember some of the people he knew. Do you know any of these names : Frank Hall, Brian Rennie, Jimmy Williams, Jacky Haycaster, Ian Goodison, Brenda Crownshaw,Mavis Clifford, Brenda Shephard, Dougie Paxton. Or maybe someone remembers my dads brothers who are a little younger than him - David and Paul King

I'll certainly ask my surviving uncle (Paul) about the names. Thanks! My Uncle Paul has only just retired from Doncasters and his dad, My Grandad worked there for many years before him. I will ask my uncle if he knew of or has heard of Walter Taylor. Thanks for replying.

My family lived on Bamforth Street until 1955. We had a shop just below Robsons Yard. We were 3 brothers. We went to Burton Street School which was really called Langsett Road Secondary School. I left in 1948 to go City Grammar. Jimmy Williams was my cousin and lived in High House Road. Ian Goodison and Mavis Clifford lived in Burton Street. They were all 6 years older than me the same age as my elder brother. I think you mean Jackie Acaster who also lived on Bamforth Street. The house next to the big entry on Penistone Road was the Pawn Shop known as "Poppy Hallams".

I lived on Cuthbert Bank Road 1950 to 1958. Didn't go to Burton Street School (Went to Sacred Heart) but I remember some of those that went there . Names I remember include Andy Wilson , John Fitzgibbon , David Farrell , Alan Barker , Mick Wilkinson , Lynn Weatherall and the Rotchell sisters , Peggy , Janet and Sharon. Saw Andy Wilson last Christmas , he's living at Upperthorpe these days. Saw John Fitzgibbon last year , he was living up High Green. Haven't seen any of the others for many years.

I recognise those names. Saw John Fitzgibbon at Chapletown baths last year.

My name was Margaret Marsh back then. Went to Burton Street School around 1958. I lived on High House Road. Anyone remember taking old clothes to the rag yard on top road. Used to go to Sunday school on Bamforth Street.
My Dad (Norman) used to drink in Barrack Tavern and I used to sit on steps with an orange juice and packet of cheese biscuits, cheese triangles and pickled onions.

My uncle, Reuben Crosby, used to live at 25 (I think, it was on the corner) Burton Street which they rented from the Patnick family. He had several children and I feel sure they would have gone to Burton Street School. Their names, starting with eldest, are Edith, Brian, Mary, Peter and Margaret.

The house next to the big entry on Penistone Road was the Pawn Shop known as "Poppy Hallams".

are you max williams? I wento burton st it was later changed to langsett rd sec mod I,m 73 lived in abc streets 1938 -1966

I went to Burton Street School or Langsett First and Middle as it became. Left around 1972 and the head at that time was Mr Ford. Lived at 4 Blackburn Street before they pulled all the houses down. I used to play in the school orchestra and also Sheffield Youth Orchestra. What a brilliant childhood.

Does anyone remember the Storer family? They lived in one of the terraced houses on the road next to the Barracks pub (cant remember the name ,sorry)and moved when they were demolished in the early 70s. The daughter,Christine was a school friend of mine at Herries Comp ( we left 72) me and other old school friends would love to hear from her.
