That must be the one, it was his son I went to school with, Simon. I just remember Limpsfield Road was the only cobbled street left when I was little, I presume its now been resurfaced.

I went to Hinde House from 84-88, but I lived down in Firth Park. In fact, Hinde House was my third choice school cos we moved house at the crucial time. At least it got me out of going to Earl Marshal ;)

Hi, Bobsgirl, I went to Hinde House 84-88. I did go to Earl Marshal for a short time though and hated every second of it, Hinde House was a dream compared to that. Do you remember Simon Volum?

I know the name but can't place him. To be honest I don't recognise many of the names listed on Friends Reunited! Who was your form tutor? I was in Mr Jones's for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Year and then Mr Abrams in the 5th.

I went to Hinde House between 1977-81. Don't know any of the names mentioned - I think I must have lived in a bubble! Mind you, I grew up on Standon, not the Limpsfield/Jenkin roads area.

I was there from '73 to '77. Edwards and Batty were the big hitters. A lot of younger people ( and not all that younger) I've spoke to about school can't believe the kind of discipline there was at Hinde House in my time. The heads in full battle dress:hihi:, canings, detentions the assemblies and the hymns. Very Kes :)

Hi bobsgirl, we must have been, Louise Holbrook I was then, ring any bells??

Thought it was! We had two people leave at the end of the 2nd year, and you were the only new person who started in the 3rd year (or anytime after that, I think we stayed the same class right till the end). So it was Mr Abrams in the 5th year.

Hi, I went to Hinde House from '82-'86 (name was Catherine Hinch then). I'm back living on Standon Road, so my kids go to Hinde House now - lovely new building they've got now. When I go to parents evenings, I recognise loads of teachers, some of them have been there years.

Hi I have been trying to find people who lived on Limpsfield Rd for a while. My Grandparents lived right at the top of Limpsfield under the old quarry as did a great aunt and uncle. they were called Wright and Hattersley. I also had a great aunt Ethel Housley who lived in the cottage at the top of Dearne St. I just wonder if any of these were known to you although I realise they would have been very old then. Hope something here rings a few bells. Anita

Hi I lived on Limpsfield rd in the 60s and remember Terry T and the other names. I lived at number 34 I think, on the left halfway up the hill on the right. My next door neighbours were the Allens my friend Julie lived there, my best mate was Chris Parfremont in the next yard above and my other mates were pauline Guite and Steve Allen. We moved to Jenkin rd mid 60s just up from Sheppards shop opposite the main recs gates. My other mates were Brian Bradshaw,Gordon Mclean,Martin Kelk,Michael & Ian Fidler, they lived at the lodge in the rec. I went to brightside until 69 then onto hindehouse, great times. I also had a few other mates that maybe someone has seen recently, Mark Staniforth,Lee Kirby,Kevin Holmes, his dad had the papershop next to Bells chippy. And how can I forget Dave & Walter Gillot we didn't always see eye to eye but what great lads, hope someone has similar memories regards Mark Wilson

Yes I lived on Limpsfield Rd, me Peter Selby was born in June 1947 at no 69. My mum Margaret Selby (now 84) nee Thornton, dad George, died 1991, I still miss the old bugger. Dad’s folks lived in the same yard, George and Ada, while mums folk lived in the yard above. I was a much-loved grandson especially by my lovely gran Thornton.

Here are some of the people that I remember.

Keith Walker, who lived on Stupton Rd, married Yvonne Hill and went to live in S/Africa. More about Yvonne in a future article about Hinde House school.

Gordon Rastrick, his mum nee Bolton, he had an adopted brother, can’t remember his name. (c.r.h.n)

Dave Handwell my best mate, lives in Bermuda, has two sons, had a bro named Stephen, his folks were called Bob & Hilda she was a Symonds. They first lived in Dearn St but moved to a new house on Stupton Rd.Living in the same yard as the Symonds were the Rudkins.Jack & his sister Mary they were friends of my mum & dads, they will be in their late eighties by now or pushing up daisies. Their mum kept chickens in the back yard.

Glyn Pashley,he had a sister but (c,r,h,n.)

Freddy Guite,he had a sister named Lorraine.

John MacClean he had a sister but (c,r,h,n.)

Godfrey Cole, folks called Ken & Peggy, Ken had a great sence of hummour.

Mick Hempshall, my best mate,he had a much younger brother named Patrick, they were good Catholics so I guess Pat must have been the result of a stray shot. Parrents Frank & Molly. Micks gran lived in the same yard as well. Mick moved to Rochdale, married Barbara and has a daughter.

Victor Waite who was a bit older that us, still is I suppose, lived in the same yard as Mick,Victors old man had a newsagents shop ( a small shed) at the top of Dearn St
Morris Livell, his mum never went out of the house, we call it agoraphobia today. Morris served his time in the steel works and some time later started up his own business but due to some trifling indiscretion served his time again at Her Majesties Pleasure. Today people diddle others out of millions and get a Knighthood for it.

John Vollum,

Below Johns was Syd Smith he ran a motor cycle repair business from his house, later moving to a shop on Attercliffe Common. Many of my hard earned quids went into Syds till.Syd had a sign over the entry that proudly proclaimed Syd Smith Motor Cycles Rudge Agent. I bet the screw holes are still in the brickwork.

Other people that I remember were old man Wright who lived on the corner of Limpsfield and Oxted Rd. He was a self appointed custodian of the “Quarry” and was always chasing us kids away .We thought that he was a right *******, pun intended, but I got to know him better as a teenager and he was quite a nice guy really.

Susan Ashforth lived on Oxted Rd.

Derek Willsons folks had a fruit and veg shop in Jenkin Rd,he married Linda Swain *******!, more about that later. His folks built a new house on Oxted Rd near the old farm. The house was very posh at the time, they were probably charging too much for the fruit and veg .My dad worked long hours (shifts) as a turner at ESC River Don works for a pittance, this hard graft no doubt contributed to his early death .

Mick & Joyce Smith nee Hotnell, they lived in the same yard as Roy Hatersley.Joyces mum lived on Oxted Rd and ran a sweet shop out of her back room .My aunty, Dorris Whitehead nee Thornton would take me there to buy sweets,(was this the start of tooth cavities).Mick Smith had a Ariel Square 4 which was a very cool bike to have at the time. My dad bought it off him but spoilt it by attaching a sidecar, still I had to go somewhere.
Most of the kids above went to Bright side school including Tina Cotton from Jenkin Rd, Lyn Davies, Dave Nettleton, John Read, Danny Slack both from Dearne St and many others their names I cannot recall. Fortunately I have a Brightside School group photo of us all taken in May 1952 and if we ,The Old Boys and Girls ,were to see it ,it might just jog our old gray mattes and we might be able to put a few names to the faces . It really is fun and embarrassing (God did I really look like that) at the same time, . If any one wants a copy just let me know, then we can compare notes.

One think that is permanently etched in my mind were the toilets at Brightside School. The bogs were built in Victorian times and never upgraded after generations of Brightside kids had put their bums on those ****** soaked wooden seats. I took one look and decided in an instance that no way was my very young arse ever going to make contact with the mahogany. This early (bad) experiences got me into a life long habit of going for a crap before I left home for school or work and you can almost set you’re watch by my bowel rumblings. Rubble rumble must be 6.45, yes sure is, on time as usual, off we go, grab a book. This routine will continue long after I’ve been put in the ground and some early morning jogger, running though the graveyard is going to be in for a fright.

I better stop typing now as I have used all the memory up, mine not the computers. I have more to say especially about Hinde House School. I would love to hear from anyone who can confirm, deny or add to what I have written. The passing of time has a nasty habit of distorting things somewhat but it might have jogged a few memories and perhaps between us we might get the facts straight.

yes i knew barry hill...he lived at the junction of stupton and jenkin road ...i heard the council knocked their house down because they were going to extend stupton road to go straight through to tipton street...then changed their mind ... barry was a little older than me and taught me and quite a few others to ride a bike...he had a natural talent for that...we as a group always used to hang about about on street corners or the rec...that wasnt to cause trouble, it was just a social gathering......the thing i will always remember about him is that rather than walk to the rec gates he would always jump over the rec fence with just one hand on the top .To me that always looked so supercool but when i tried it i nearly broke my neck..he always had a reputation as a hard case but he wasnt...when you got to know him he had a heart of gold and was a great lad.. am sorry to hear he died...when we were teenagers he was always a part of our lives

Does anybody know what happened to Linda Swain and Yvonne Hill they were both in my class at Hinde House 1956 -62.Both were from Wincobank, one of them lived on Standon rd and the other on Wood bury rd but can't remember which way round.Looking at Google Earth I see that the roads are still there.Linda married Derek Wilson and Yvonne to Kieth Walker but this was many moons ago. They were loverly girls and yes you have guest right I fell for them but at the time I was way to shy to say so (I can feel myself blushi:blush: ng now) Anyhow it would be nice to catch up with them.

Hi dont know if this is relevant, but I still live on Beacon Rd, which is just around the corner from Limpsfield and just down the road from Brightside, two of my former schools!

I can only remember a little about Brightside School, I remember loving the bars and swings and the races that the kids used to hold in the playground and trying to beat everyone down towards the school fence where all the bushes and trees had overgrown. I went to both Limpsfield and Brightside in the 90's, I'm not sure of the exact date. But when I go past Brightside now the trees have gone and so have all the old park things. Does anyone remember Sports Day? With the egg and spoon race?

Now Limpsfield I don't have many fond memories of the place because I was bullied quite a lot there, but does anyone remember the discos that used to be held there every friday lunchtime? I used to love them and I remember everyone was in a spice girls tribute band and making up dance routines and sometimes in the disco, just before it started, these girls would come out and do dance routines that they'd been praticing for weeks.

I remember having to wear uniform in Year 5 because some kid had said that this guy had come through the bushes and trees near the upper playground and threatened him with a knife. Does anyone know if that really happend cos this kid had a habit of making up stories.

I remember the boys playing football and me and kayleigh, I've forgotten her last name, once sat on the fence commentating and found it very funny!

I've got lots of other stuff I can tell, but I've bored you enough already.

I was one of the first kids to go to Hinde House. Went Sept 1956 when it first opened its doors and stayed until 1960 . I was in the first 5th year they had. I went there from Hucklow Rd.
We had a good 50th anniversary celebration of the opening of the school last year and George Ridgeway came along and cut the cake.
Anybody from that era wanting to go to our next reunion send me a PM

I was there from 67-71. Mick Glover was my form teacher, nice bloke though during sports lessons he'd put you through the grinder. Other teachers at that time: Mr Moss, Mr Goldstrawe,
Mr Andrew, Mr Dowling, Miss Smith, Miss Frohock (cow), Mr Sagar, Mr Nicholson, Mr Stretch, Mr Keenan, Mr Keeton (buster), Mr Turner (head of lower site), Mr Ward, Mr Cutts. I could go on and on, who remembers 'spam' pemberton the deputy head & Crownshaw?

Classmates:
Andrew Surr, Brian Patrick, Keith Glover, David Wills, Mick Gilmore, Des Briggs, Geoff Capewell, Martin Clarke, Norman Bailey, Stuart Butler, George Patterson, Winston Reid, Liz Cook, Theresa Turton, Liz Rhodes, Gail Morris, Gail Pinning, Jean Maroney.

Does the school still exist? I heard a rumour it had been bulldozed.

Hi,
Ive just found this web site and subject, and know a lot of names from Brightside.
I am a 3rd generation Brightsider, my grandad, Albert Neale was from Brightside, my Dad Ted Neale still lives in Brightside, and I was born in Brightside and lived there for 29 years until I emigrated to Australia in 1998.
I recognise a lot of names from the 70s, of my Dads age, Kiwi Pete and Alanbystreet seem to have grown up in my parents era.
My adulthood centered around the Rising Sun, as did my Dads, and Grandads. Had some good memories in there.
My childhood centered around the park or reck, me and Mr Fiddler never saw eye to eye, although I give him his dues, he kept it spottless.

Ill take a trip down memory lane approx 75 \76

Limpsfield ; the Abdullas, the Parkers, the Vollums as mentioned, the Peaces, the Rastricks, the Joneses, the Brownleys, Mrs Winterbottem, the Greens, the Hattersleys, the Ellises, the Windles, the Willeys, the Gaffneys, the Johnsons,

Stupton; the Hanwells, as mentioned, the Gibbs, the Newtons, the Gills, the Ellises, the Pashleys, the Goodsons, the Waltons

Oxted ;The Neales, the Turtons, the Griffithses, the Capewells, Mrs Dasilva , the Scaifs, the Batesies, the Doyles, the Peacocks, the Bakers, the Burgins, the Ashforths, the Lacks, the Coultons, the Goulsons, Sally Atkin, Wilf the cobbler, the Wilsons, the Newcombes

All to name a few.

It holds some good memories for me Brightside, I do get back every few years although it hasnt got the same community feeling as when growing up in the 70s.

Anyone else have memories of 70s Brightside?

Can you tell us anything about the riot of Summer '74?I know there was one but don't know any details.
The upper school went 'on strike' because of the draconian regulations. Someone got sent home for wearing the wrong coloured socks and it caused the bigger boys and girls to stage a protest. Very exciting at the time....you had to be there :D

I am desperately trying to find a photograph of the old cottage which stood at the top of Dearne Street. My great aunt lived there alone from around 1919 after her husband was killed in the first world war until she went into a nursing home in the early 1970s. I don't know when the cottage was demolished. I spent many many happy hours there with her as a child but there are no family photos of the cottage. I have tried the archives and the Sheffield Libraries with no luck. Here's hoping. Thanks Anita

I was one of the first at Hinde House . Went there from Hucklow Rd when it first opened in Sept 1956 and was in the first 5th year . Left in 1960. Geoff Hook was our form teacher in 4th and 5th years - he was a good teacher and we all got on with him. He went on to be head at Myers Grove I think. Sadly he died a couple of years ago.
Remember George Ridgeway? He is still around and comes to our reunions.

I was at Hinde House 1980-84 and I can't say I enjoyed it that much to be honest.

Funnily enough though today I visited a friend who lives at Sheffield Lane Top so I took a slight detour to go past the school expecting it to be locked up. I noticed it wasn't so I tentavely drove down the path down to the school. At this point I was quite nervous at seeing the place again as I'd not been back since I left nearly 25 years ago so I thought I'd probably swear at it and carry on to my friend's house.

Well bugger me was I surprised when I saw that the whole school had been knocked down and replaced with a new building :o

When was it knocked down and rebuilt?

I left Hinde House in 1960 and those of us who started at the school in 1956 when it was built have regular reunions which I attend. I don't live in Sheffield anymore but am told by the lady who organises the reunions and is in touch with the school that the original school building was set alight by vandals a few years ago which is why it had to be pulled down. It was very sad that it happened shortly before the school's 50th Anniversary in 2006.

From memory Hartley Brook did cater for secondary kids in the 40's - it was a through school similar to Shiregreen, Hatfield House and Meynell - all in the north of the city.

David is still the chef at Admiral Rodney n he lives with his partner n 2 children. I used to go to Brownies n Guides with Tracey Bradbury but she was younger than me so she was either in the same year as you or the year younger. I went to Firth Park school, lived in Firth Park but I always hung about down Grimesthorpe so I know quite a lot of people in the area from going down to the Grimesthorpe family centre n now drinking round Brightside. So who are you? PM me if you don't want to reveal who you are to everyone.

John
Thanks for that information John. For years I had been looking at satellite images of the school land and couldn't work out what had happened! I didn't recognise what I was looking at and couldn't understand it.

I admit to not particularly enjoying school, but since I didn't know what else to do, I stayed on with a good set of girls (Patricia Woodcock, Cheryl Slater and Maureen Docherty) and ended up at teaching college in Nottingham. I do thank heavens for accidentally getting in with the 'right sort'!

What I find amazing is how many names are being thrown into the hat on this website, and how many seem so familiar after 40 years. Wish I could have some of those years back!

I was at Hinde House from September 1965 till December 1969. I remember George Ridgeway well. Miss Frohock, Mrs. Long (first form teacher), Chris Hawes (English), Mr. Ward, Mr. Collins, Mr. Hill (History), Mr. Parkin (Maths), Mr. Powell (Chemistry?).

Not forgetting Spam (Pemberton), Turner (nice bloke) and Edwards (scary).
Drinkingman, you must have been there for most of the time that I was! I went in 65, class 1C (C for Chantrey house!) 2B1, 3B1, 4B1 5B1, AND I stayed for 6th Form (brave soul) I don't remember ever ever talking to Edwards, even though Tricia, Cheryl and I did some nice singing at school! Ungrateful Oik!

First form tutor and maths teacher was Mr Ward, and we thought he was lovely, a real nice bloke and not scary unless one of the boys crossed him. Fred Collins was explosive when the lads misbehaved, and I think he was more than willing to 'slipper' them.

Does anyone remember lining up for BCG tests and the rumour spreading down the queue that it was a virginity test!? Hilarious! Why we were panicking I don't know, we were all virgins - 'what if the test goes wrong?' How silly we were. Fun to remember though.

I went to Hinde House from 1958 to 1962. The teachers I remember were, Mr Andrews (games and music) Mr O'Keefe (games) Mr Millner (games) Mr Napier (metalwork) Mrs Napier ( can't remember what she taught) Mr Gill (maths) Mr Hook (english) Mrs Turner (History) I could probably remember a few more if I thought about it long enough. I still see some of the old lads. Dave Irving, Paul Barson, Rodger Ludlam, Cliff Redfearn, Brian Bilby. I don't see many of the old girls around, mind you, they probably wouldn't want to remember me.

I went to Brighside School and Hinde House and lived on Limpsfield Road :) So did my eldest sister Laraine Guite and my brother Freddie Guite. Any memories anyone. I was born in 58 but they were born in the 40's.. We lived on Limpsfield Road until the middle 70's, nearly at the top on the left hand side number 75, I can remember the cobbled road seemed endless when I used to walk up from the bottom, been since and it not at all?. Does anyone have any memories of my brother at school or later as a drummer, sadly he died in 75. Any photos? I have posted a few on friends reunited from Brightside school. Look forward to hearing from you. Pauline Guite

Hi Pauline,

Are you still there? You can be forgiven if you have given up waiting for a response after all this time but I have only just caught up with the Forum. Wrote something about Limpsfield back in Jan 07 but there were only a few responses, (Anlaby St having the best recall) so I drifted away. Could it be that most folk who lived there at the time are either dead, moved to the other end of the earth (still how much farther can get than me without falling off the end), don’t give a stuff about the past or are in la la land. Might be a good place to be though. No worries there.
OK cut the crap Pete did I hear you say and get on with it.

So I was born in 47 that’s 1947, at no 69 Limpsfield Rd. My Gran lived in the next yard up at 73? Same yard as you Pauline but to my shame I can’t remember you. Yes, I knew Freddie, we played together a lot. Now I’m talking about kids play not the later pop bands that Freddie was to play in. I think Freddie was a bit younger than me, this is where the brain crumble clicks in again, can’t be sure but there would be only a couple of years in it.
I can remember your Ma and Pa but for some reason I remember Jim better. He was either your Dad’s or Mum’s brother? He was a very friendly guy, lived on Dearne St and drove a truck for the London Brick Co. Always had a red face, that’s Jims face not the truck, although these lorries were red with some black and seemed to be very big to us kids although when you see a restored one today they are quite small. Foden I think?
I have three photos of Freddie taken in the early 50’s. Two were snapped in our backyard the third being taken by a professional photographer of all the pupils of Brightside School. The date on the back says 1954.I can scan these pics and send you the copies. Let me know.

There’s a lot more to say but I’ll leave that until later.

See Ya,
Pete.
