View Full Version : Right then..im going to live around junction 37 of M1, but where exactly?
Im moving to this area, around 37 of the M1, but im not exactly sure where to go?!
I dont know the area at all, i have a friend who lives in Penistone who said that its really lovley there, and ive seen some really good houses around there. I also have a friend wo lives in Hoyland, but she said its a bit hit and miss there.
What does everyone else out there think?
Much appreciated-thanks so much! xxx
I work in Gawber, which is just off J37, and get the feeling it's a decent place.... I quite like Penistone... but it's a little way from J37 - about 10/15mins drive.
youwhatref 08-05-2006, 05:40 I think it will be Barnsley then :hihi:. You'll get more for your money up that end. Penistone is ok, out of the way slightly but depends where you'll be working.
Hi all, thanks for replies, really appreciate this, first time buyer, new to area, all v scary!!!!
Its my partner that has a new job, he will be working at: LS12 6NU. Sorry i dont have any more info, other than that, but he said its quite close to moterway/whiterose maybe too, so i think thats better than central Leeds?
You what ref...how come Barnsley? Do you know any good/def no-go areas there? Penistone ok? At least you said its not terrible!!!!
Thanks too indierr, will have a look where about you are on the map. Thanks again!
Ah ha! So indierr, you live a bit futher up M1, i suppose that would be a bit better for my partners workonly marginally though. Whats your postcode area if you dont mind me asking?
Ive been looking quite a lot at Simon Blythe estate agents, anyone used them, what do you think?
Just seen a lovley house on there too:

I really like that, is the price cheap cos its not a very nice area or am i just thinking of Sheffield and Penistone house prices? Ah, ive just seen thats its quite near Thurnscoe, and if my memory is right, someone said its a bit 'rough' there. Whatever that means! Maybe thats why its cheap?!
Thanks.
Just loking still...any of these awful areas...(i know thats subjective, but if someone thinks it awful, loads of kids hanging around, blah blah, then im more than likely to just think i might as well look elsewhere! You know what i mean!!!)

Ooops! I didnt realise i had put that many on! I just kept clicking away, and as ywr mentioned Barnsley, i found quite a few good ones there, do seem to be able to get more for the money there thn Penistone. Anyway, if anyone knows any of the areas, then feel free to comment! Thanks!
deadheadfred 08-05-2006, 11:58 Can't really comment on most of those areas, but Thurgoland is generally nice. It's surrounded by open countryside, pretty quiet, has a local primary school only a couple of minutes walk away and a couple of decent pubs. As far as access to the M1 goes, it's a lot easier and quicker to reach J.36 from there.
Hi, thanks deadheadfred (!!!!!) Ive seen a few others in thurgoland too, so cheers again. Although i dont have kids, and wont have for at least ten years so school of no interest! Hope its not too kiddy-i.e. screaming brats out day and night!!!
Hi, I moved from Sheffield (Gleadless) to Tankersley, just off jct 36 4 years ago and I love it. Its quite rural, loads of birds and wildlife and people are friendly.
Thanks Lindy, will make a note of that, do you know any areas ish of the houses i listed? Anyone else? Cheers.
EdnaKrabappe 08-05-2006, 20:34 I used to work in Dodworth or Dod uth as the locals know it until 2004. It's a friendly enough community, old pit village and there are some new flats there next to the Living Well gym (used to be my gym, got voted best Living Well in the country and it certainly is a nice place) The village pubs are ok, the Indian restaurant is superb and the schools are alright if that's an issue. There is a train station at the top of the road which will get you to Sheff and Roth should you need it or onto Huddesfield.
The only downside is the proposed bypass for that area. Buyer beware.
Trishtee 08-05-2006, 21:36 My hubby is originally from Penistone and still has family there. He likens it to 'Royston Vasey' - go and look and you'll see what he means! It's generally very run down although there are some nicer areas on the fringes. Thurgoland is a pretty dead place as well that doesn't have much to offer apart from some nice views across to Stocksbridge in the daytime. If you want plenty of shops and a good choice of pubs/restaurants etc then Chapeltown, Grenoside, Burncross or High Green areas are better and there is a much wider choice of housing. Try going to these places at night and see if you'd feel comfortable; it does put a different perspective on things. Happy House Hunting!
Good idea going at night trishtee, thanks!
Doesnt sound too good about Penistone, is it really that run down? There are quite a few houses on the list that i included earlier in Pen, do you know if any of them are in goo bits of Pen, if there are any?!
This may make us both sound really boring, but i honestly dont think we really need that much in way of ammenities really, we will both be working full time, and at weekends, will probably be visitng families/having friends staying/doing DIY/shopping in Leeds/sheff/meadowhall/machester etch, blah blah. I would honestly just like somewhere that was quiet, and i suppose there are more donts than do's!!
i.e doesnt have a million brats out every night/day, a billion youths hanging around at night, lots of traffic, high crimes rates. I hope that makes sense, just would like a decent area, where we could get on with our life, make the house nice, enjoy having friends to stay and being happy!!
Edna; ive been to the livingwell in dodworth before, it is quite nice isnt it? I think i would probably join there when we move. Ive been to Bluebell for lunch, but not really ventured anymore around there, thanks for the advice though!
Cheers all, anymore idea welcome! x
Oh, edna, there is actually a house in Dodworth on the list and it looks rather good, great drive, although not sure about the ceilings inside, its on Wareham Grove, do you know that area? x

I actually live in Sheffield.... but Gawber (S75 2RP) is just off J37 as you requested :-)
ah ha! Thanks indierr! Still open to ideas/help etc! Cheers x

I'd recommend you look on Google Earth for the placing if you haven't already. I don't know the estate personally but it looks pretty close to the motorway... not sure if that's an issue for you - i.e. there is a field then the motorway there.
Thanks edna, will get looking now! xx
