Strix 06-05-2006, 22:44 I raced round an beheaded all of ours - before they get the chance to spawn more of the damned things :suspect: I suspect this excercise may have been futile - given the distance I know thoe seeds are going to travel from a neigbouring production facility  islandman 06-05-2006, 22:46 WOOOOOOOO , ITS SCAREY , ANIT IT !! Yes it is. I believe they're soon going to mutate into triffids and attack us. poppins 06-05-2006, 23:18 Make some Dandelion soup ! bjshooter 06-05-2006, 23:21 Don't people drink dandelion tea, sounds lovely. mega_monty 06-05-2006, 23:22 hey guys , is it just my gardan , or is everyone getting invading by dandylions !! Otherwise known as Pissy Beds (http://www.arkive.org/species/ARK/plants_and_algae/Taraxacum_officinale_agg/more_info.html) Lindseyw 06-05-2006, 23:23 I have been outside and looked at neighbours gardens.........yes they too have them - all up and down the road. poppins 06-05-2006, 23:24 My Grandad use to make Dandelion wine:gag: mega_monty 06-05-2006, 23:26 My Grandad use to make Dandelion wine:gag: I've heard of Dandelion and Burdock :gag: but never dandelion wine, does it make you wet the bed ? (hence the name pissy beds) Lindseyw 06-05-2006, 23:26 people used to say that if you picked them you would wet the bed !! bjshooter 06-05-2006, 23:28 I know gardeners hate them, but not being one myself, I think they look quite pretty.:) mega_monty 06-05-2006, 23:30 I know gardeners hate them, but not being one myself, I think they look quite pretty.:) Because they have such deep roots you nearly end up digging your garden. Lindseyw 06-05-2006, 23:31 I I think they look quite pretty.:) Ahh good so it's not just me then ??? DIVA 07-05-2006, 01:27 Yeah, I don't get it. At the last possible moment, I used weed and feed last year, but there's tons of the buggers this year. My neighbour's gardens are the same. What can we do? Weed and feed just seems to make the grass look tired and doesn't touch the dandelions. Chumley 07-05-2006, 01:38 Definitely seems to be a bumper crop this year. Just have to bite the bullet and pull em up by hand I think. glen 07-05-2006, 01:54 carrot, apple, and dandelion leaves make a fantastic blood cleanser also tastes nice.It is in my uses of juices book:hihi: Plain Talker 07-05-2006, 04:01 Yeah, I don't get it. At the last possible moment, I used weed and feed last year, but there's tons of the buggers this year. My neighbour's gardens are the same. What can we do? Weed and feed just seems to make the grass look tired and doesn't touch the dandelions. there's a saying with dandelions, and probably applies to most weeds... "one year's seeding, ten years' weeding" if you let the seeds set, they can remain dormant in your soil for ten years, and keep popping up at inopportune times. poppies, too,lay dormant, and germination is only triggered by the earth around the seed being disturbed. PT mrsnoo 07-05-2006, 07:09 Dandelion wine is beautiful. My other half and me spent an hour or so dead heading all the dandelions on a green in front of our house a couple of years ago. We made lots of lovely wine. The only trouble is my head wont take the drink as it is very strong. rubydazzler 07-05-2006, 08:23 we used to call them pee-beds ...and be scared if we touched them we'd wet the bed ... When you're pulling them up make sure to wear gloves or your hands go black, something to do with the sap. Takes ages to get rid of the stain. Now if only the myriad slugs and snails would learn to eat the dandelions instead of the precious plants of the garden ... we'd welcome them with glad cries of joy instead of slug pellets ... result! but yes, they do look very pretty ... *binty* 07-05-2006, 08:41 I haven't got one single dandelion in my garden, i'm gutted!! x x rubydazzler 07-05-2006, 08:47 I haven't got one single dandelion in my garden, i'm gutted!! x x Have some of mine michelle123, you're very welcome :D PLEASE!!! antisocial 07-05-2006, 09:00 Yeah, even though we have been fighting them at the allotment since we got it we are still covered in them. Resisting the chemicals though... Isn't puring salt into their core supposed to kill them off? bladeslass 07-05-2006, 09:54 I did have loads of dandelions in my garden until i cut the lawn yesterday before it rained. i hate those other weeds where kids pick them and blow all the seeds off!!! antisocial 07-05-2006, 10:12 Isn't puring salt into their core supposed to kill them off? Isn't that slugs:hihi: rubydazzler 07-05-2006, 10:18 Yes salt kills plants, if you bruise them by stepping on them and then pour salt on them ... but it also poisons the soil and nothing else will grow there for ages. You can get a cheap weedkiller called sodium chlorate which is basically salt. I sell lots of it ... it's good for places where you don't want to replant like for instance putting down gravel or flags. trudge72 07-05-2006, 10:34 ive got loads of the things to but a bit of useless info that u can do with them.the leaves can go in salads(if they are away from chemicals ie roads,or fertalises etc)they are rich in potassium so a good diuretic hence the old name pee the bed so good for water retention and the rootsbeen used as a liver tonic for years to get rid of toxins from the urinal tracks.so by the sounds of it we could all get very drunk on the wine and clean the toxins later lol rubydazzler 07-05-2006, 10:41 i like the sound of the wine, is it actually made from the flowers? Anyone fancy trying to make some ... i'll pick the flowers for you, I do that anyway to stop em seeding. *is imagining a glass filled with a rich dark yellow syrupy sweet wine ...glowing like a topaz with the light through it - some sort of ambrosial elixir of the gods ... * actually it probably tastes like cat's pee :D bladeslass 07-05-2006, 10:44 * actually it probably tastes like cat's pee :D Eurgh!!! you tasted cat's pee? :gag: fozzybronze 07-05-2006, 10:45 Now if only the myriad slugs and snails would learn to eat the dandelions instead of the precious plants of the garden ... we'd welcome them with glad cries of joy instead of slug pellets ... result! Nice one. If you could develop this, you'll be a millionaire! trudge72 07-05-2006, 10:51 if u go to the whirlow farm show or the bakewell one some 1 is always sell dd wine.so how many of use makes wine grab your dd head an take them to the dev cat on sunday that sort ruby out an ant 1 eles who wants a tiple lol rubydazzler 07-05-2006, 11:08 Eurgh!!! you tasted cat's pee? :gag: well, not actually tastedbut you know how it smells? prolly doesn't taste much different :D There's an Oz wine someone bought me once called "Cat's Pee on a Dandelion Leaf" or something similar :gag: trudge, if you're expecting ME to make wine, you're sadly mistaken :P ... I was hoping someone else would offer and I could just give opinions on the result!! mrsnoo, where are you??? Andy 07-05-2006, 11:10 There's an Oz wine someone bought me once called "Cat's Pee on a Dandelion Leaf" or something similar :gag: What had you done to upset them? :| trudge72 07-05-2006, 11:47 still here i dont expect you to make it some 1 earlier on this thread did thou, trouble with home brew is the morning after well that wat ive heard any way,but wat ever we do with the d lions i think their here to stay so looks like im weeding again an again an again sapphire_blu 07-05-2006, 11:54 GAther them all up and give em to a family who have rabbits or a rescue centre for animals!! Makes very nice coffee. :shakes: gross :gag: utah 07-05-2006, 15:36 I remember when we had a rabbit and a guinea pig we were always short in our garden so I use to go round the neighbours collecting juicy morsels for them. This year..with not a dandelion eating pet amongst us... they're taking over everyones gardens. I love the idea of taking them to Thornberry along with my jumble, you reckon they'll welcome a bag of weeds? :) ianjones 09-05-2006, 00:25 I had not noticed but have just looked outside and noticed that next door have become over run with them. Yet on my patch there are none??? Bago 09-05-2006, 02:29 Yes salt kills plants, if you bruise them by stepping on them and then pour salt on them ... but it also poisons the soil and nothing else will grow there for ages. I sell lots of it ... it's good for places where you don't want to replant like for instance putting down gravel or flags. Waht's the difference between table salt, and typical weed killer ? I think it's time to be evil, and bring out my weed KILLER ! :D Da-da-DAAA.... Gardening is a pain. My nicely laid gravel are now polluted by weeds, dog poo, cat pee. The dandelions are having a field day ! *sobs* |
