I have a problem which only happens while i,m on the internet and wondered if anyone out there can help.
First of all i,m pretty thick when it comes to computers so any info is greatly welcome but try not to get to technical.

THE PROBLEM:

Whenever i click on a link i get a box flash up from freeserve completely blank.
Instead of bringing up the proposed site it remains blank.
I have no problem logging into a site but any kind of link remains blank.
An example is if i go to the links page on this site and i click on one it will not matterialise.
I have had this problem since i downloaded a digital camara and think this is connected to that.
Have i disturbed something or moved something.
I need help, but please not to complicated.
PS. I have a laptop, don,t know if that helps.

I'm NOT a computer buff, so I can't say for sure, but it may have something to do with your firewall!

hmm, a firewall eh, err whats one of them.

Your browser may have been hikacked try a Google search on 'Browser Hijacking' to see if any of the many ways (spyware etc) may be responsible for your problem !

Done that Google think and although i understand the meaning of the problm which sounds very much like Hijacking on my PC caused by the software on my camara i,m unable to solve the problem myself.
Anybody inthe North of Sheffield who could sort this out would be appreciated. I will travel further a field if i need to.
I have a laptop so its quite transportable, all i need is someone with an internet connection and time to sort it out for me.

What's your operating system?

Try this:

1. Start, run
2. Type regsvr32 urlmon.dll
3. Press enter or click OK
4. Open Internet Explorer
5. Tools > Internet Options > Programs
6. Click "Reset Web Settings"
7. Try using links.

This is not dangerous and can be done by anyone, I found this in the XP forum.

Tried that Maxt but it says not found, make sure its spelt correct. ????

I'm off in 1/2 an hour so haven't time to check spelling. Try from step 4 see if that helps.

If not, register on the site I posted and put as much detail as possible in a posting. They really are s**t hot problem solvers there.

If you've not already done it:


go to microsoft.com and download any service packs for your operating system that exist, also get the latest version of internet explorer and any service packs, especially the security fixes.
install all the above
get a free firewall such as zonelarm (zonealarm.com)
do a full system virus scan with something like Norton anti-virus
do a spyware scan using a free spyware detector
shut down options you don't need in internet explorer such as active-x options, etc
in outlook/outlook express turn off the email preview pane.
get an anti-spam tool like mailwasher pro which lets you bounce back spam to the sender before you open it in outlook.
sit back and think that although your system is not secure (*no* system connected to the internet can ever be completely risk free), it's protected better than many other people's so you're at a much lower risk from random idiots trying to access your machine.

Oh yeah, back up any crucial data to cd often, and use a password encrypting application to store any personal info/passwords/etc.

your only other option is to install IE6.5 (available on most PC magazine cover discs) over your current IE

Is you home page set blank ?

e-mail me,I may be able to look at it.most of the advice you are getting is no good if you know nothing about the workings of computers.

try installing firefox, IEs crap anyway :)

Have you downloaded adaware or something similar to do a scan for spyware that maybe causing problems?

Also if you're on broadband and have no firewall then get one as soon as possible. IIRC it can take 15 mins or less for an unprotected Windows PC to be hacked. If you have a router then you should be OK but if it's just a USBPCI ADSL modem then you have no protection.
