There's a few for me.

I'll pick one though, to get us started.

Went to the pics a few years ago and the usual cancerous rom-coms, buy pepsi, own a nokia type films were being shown.

As result I decided to gamble a fiver on "Doberman".

I had never heard of it and had absolutely no idea what it was about.

However it was an 18 so I knew I would not have a gang of chavs sat behind getting pregnant and stuff.

Turned out to be a super cool, ultra-violent French bank robber film which was absoutely class and which I now own.

Any of yous unearthed a previously unknown gem?

It wasn't at the pictures but one saturday night on BBC2. Its a Paul Newman film called Nobody's Fool. Its well acted, well written and is an absolute gem considering i've never heard of it.

I've looked around but it seems you can't buy it in this country for some reason.

Sandinista with James Woods - saw it almost 20 years ago. Brilliant. i've never forgotten it. Don't think it's that well known. See it if you can....

1995 one saturday i was at Meadowhall with my mate, decided to go see a film. There wasnt really anything we wanted to see so we decided on a film called The Shawshank Redemption.

Turned out to be one of the best films i've ever seen and a modern classic!
One of my top five!

Yeah Memento was really good. J ust felt sorry for whatisname being made to look like Brad Pitt!

"Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" is a classic - Liz Taylor and Richard Burton. This might turn into a "fav films" thread...

I rented "Life of Brian" on video about 20 years ago and hadn't, at the time, got a clue what it was about.

Without doubt it is now my favourite film

I went to see Donnie Darko the day it was released, didn't know what it was about and it had been marketed as another teen film.

Now one of my favourites and a lot of other people's.

Ronin?? - Robert de Niro and Sean Bean starring. Very dark and violent, but realistic.

La Vita e Bella (Life is Beautiful) is my favourite film of all time I think. I had it on my shelf for about 4 years before I finally got round to putting it on and I think I've now seen it about six times.

It's quite a harrowing story but told in a beautiful and often comical way. Roberto Benini plays an Italian Jew during WWII who tries to protect his little son from the horror of the concentration camps by making it into a game for him. It's just brilliant and so moving. I love it!

I'm with Spyro on this one. I watched Battle Royale on a friend's recommendation. Absolutely superb, excellent storyline.

Expect the lame 'Americanised' version in a few years time!

One late night at university a film came on Channel 4, worse for wear myself and a mate weren't taking much notice of it at the start...it was only when it becomes clear that in the first scene the young man on screen means to hang himself did we sit up and take notice (yep, I'm sick...wanna make something of it?). So after the preparations are made and the deed is done with the man kicking the chair away leaving the camera to linger on his gently swinging corpse.

After a few seconds the door to the room opens and an older lady enters who we presume is the young man's mother, she sees her son swinging from the chandelier, shrugs and walks off at which point we cut to the mans face who opens his eyes and sticks his tounge out at his retreating mother.

First scene in Harold & Maude...one of my favourite films, a rather touching love story about a proto goth (well they weren't around in the late 60's early 70's) whose hobbies include faking his own death (mainly to drive away potential girlfriends his mother lines up) and going to funerals meeting the love of his life who also happens to like going to funerals .

The only problem is that she also happens to be 75 years old (played splendidly by Ruth Gordon, the old neighbour from Rosemary's Baby).

Smashing film with a brilliant soundtrack by Cat Stevens, a genuine classic.

I saw a French film called La Haine (The Hate) about a group of disaffected youths living in a rough Parisian estate.

Absolutely one of the most powerful films I've ever seen.

My favourite recent gem was Garden State. Really love that film.

Yeah we studied La Haine for French A level, the teacher said she couldn't let us watch it in class though because it was too violent.

I sound really young now don't I...

Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter And Spring. If you havent seen this film its definately worth it, a film with meaning rather than a gripping story line full of guns and blood. Directed by Kim Ki-Duk, one of the most beauifull films ive ever seen, a cinema masterpiece.
