View Full Version : Pubs/Clubs for the *ahem* "more mature" crowd

I've just moved back to Sheffield (where I was born and bred) - following separating from my wife. It feels really good to be living back in the city because even though I've worked here for the last 14 years and commuted in daily there are parts of the city I had completely forgotten about and have rediscovered.

One of the side effects of getting divorced has been losing a large number of friends (the saying about finding out who your real friends are applies here). So I'm keen to get out and about and meet some people to make new friends, and who knows, find a possible Mrs Hallam06!

I've lost track of all the pubs/clubs as they seem to change all the time so I'm wondering where the best places in the city centre are to meet people of a similar age (I'm 35) rather than clubs full of students (I work for the uni and can get in the students union using my staff ID - we went there last night - oh god I felt old!!) but also still have a bit of life in them.

Cue mission impossible theme tune....

Banus is mainly that kind of age group, but to be honest most clubs are fairly mixed and 35 isn't old.

35 old? Rubbish. It's not old at all.

So clubs for the 'older crowd' - how about The Derby and Joan?

Banus! The Old Josephines..:gag:

I have only been in there once and all I remember is that there were older people in there then in most other nightclubs.

Its always been like that, in the 80's it was full of middle aged men in open necked shirts sporting medallions and cigars :hihi: if you wanted to grab a granny/grandad thats where you went.

Obviously being an older person now I would probably be considered one of the grannies :hihi:

Thanks for all the suggestions. The thread title was meant to be tongue in cheek to try and get people to read it! - and it worked!

I certainly dont feel old at 35 unless surrounded by gangs of students! As my politically incorrect father says "You're as old as the woman you feel".

If it stops raining I may have a tour round some of the suggestions tonight.

I'm sooo disappointed - yet again a "more mature" person turns out to be a mere child!! I have a briefcase older than you :D

Where are the real "mature" people going (oh and I hope when I find out, I won't have to bellow at them from 2 inches away ;) ) some of us need a social life too ...

West St live is decent enough, I guess it depends on your tastes as well.

Hi Hallam06, don't worry, there is life after divorce!!! I met my parter 5 years ago at a Sheffield club and he was 31, going through divorce with 2 children - I was 21 at the time - big age gap you might be thinking but we're both adults!! Anyway, we are still together, live together, engaged - due to get married either next year or the year after (we're busy doing our house up at the mo!) and we now have a beautiful baby boy - well he's 6 months old now who loves his two big sisters which he sees every fortnight when they visit! So don't be down, get yourself out and I'm sure you'll meet the future Mrs Hallam one day...

Banus is deeply, deeply, vile. It's as bad as Josephine's ever was, and then some. In fact, and then quite a lot. Went there for a very fleeting visit with Ruby and some others the other week. Can't tell you how much I don't recommend it. Mind, it might have picked up after we left. We didn't give it long! ;)

lol, i feel old when i go to the union and im only 26! lol

if you work at the hallam, im sure somebody you work with will be able to recommend the pleasure that is the red lion on charles street.

we get loads of staff from the uni coming in for after work drinks and lunch too.

we do get the students too, but in their defence, theyre normally quite well behaved. ;)

West Street Live is definitely worth a try.
