1984 Ford Sierra XR4i (2800cc)
1990 Nissan Sunny (1400cc - Not a classic by anybodies standards)

mega_monty 04-05-2006, 18:21 1988 MG Metro Turbo,
Not everyones choice as a classic car but its something different and they are getting quite rare as most have either rusted away and ended up in the scrap yard or been broken up by mini freaks for turbocharged mini's.
MG montego estate protype
MG montego convertable
metro r 100 convertable
sherpa campervan (on lpg)
and a vauxhall zafira
There seems to be a lot of MG fans in Sheffield.

HeffyPye 13-05-2006, 19:52 me n my fella have a Ford Cortina mkIII GXL 1972 - it's in the fella's names and he's the 2nd owner of the car... the first owner being his Grandad who sadly passed away a couple of years ago.. His grandad was an avid collector of Classics having an Austin 8 & a Ford Y, a Francis Barnett an Oldsmobile (rather like an oversized lawnmower on wheels) all had to be sold though as there was no where to keep them and no one who could keep up his efforts to keep them prisitne.

Hi - I have a 1967 Reliant Scimitar GT - not the estate version but the earlier coupe version - don't see many of them on the road anymore.
mega_monty 16-05-2006, 21:26 Hi - I have a 1967 Reliant Scimitar GT - not the estate version but the earlier coupe version - don't see many of them on the road anymore.
I like the earlier Scimitars, have you had any trouble with the doors dropping due to age ?
Surprisingly no, but it's important to keep the hinge area lubricated, and watch for rust. People tend to assume because it is a fibre glass body you can forget about rust. But the doors hang on a thick metal bracket which needs taking care of.

Hi Skatiechik, I was wondering, what draws you to such..... trying not to cause any offence here.... 'ordinary' vehicles? Have I missed some hidden detail?
Well we made the journey back from Cornwall in the XR4i just! It hasn't taken too well to doing a 1000 miles in a week. Spent most of our time in the local cornish garages.
On the one day it rained, the wipers packed up. Cost us £50 to sort out. The brakes bailed out in the middle of the week. They were leaking air in somewhere, and still are. Then to top all this of the water pump has started whining and the car then started wandering on the motorway on the way home so we are going to be a bit busy this weekend as it's due an MOT next week.
This post is a bit out of context really!
Hi Skatiechik, I was wondering, what draws you to such..... trying not to cause any offence here.... 'ordinary' vehicles? Have I missed some hidden detail?
The 220 Turbos not that normal. Very cheap = lots of bang per buck. The Maestro Turbo is more unusual than your supra in that there are less about.
I'd assume he likes these cars for the same reasons that make 2.0l turbos so popular in general. That they are fairly easy to understand and work on by the average amateur mechanic whilst still being able to be tuned to above average power whilst keeping running costs sensible.
If I had somewhere to store lots of cars I can imagine building up quite an assortment of old wierd things. Especially if I could insure a car on limited classic insurance for <£200 a year. As it stands, owning a terrace house means I cant :(

Not quite sure you can say they are ordinary.
Maestro Police Car - Unique as far as anyone is aware.
Maestro Tickford Turbo - Limited edition with only 505 being made, estimated 180 left.
Rover 220 GTi Turbo (Hatchback) - Limited edition 500, not known how many left although it is known they are significantly rarer than the Maestro Turbo. (Although to be fair it still has a little way to go before it can be considered a classic)
Rover Maestro Campervan - Again only 500 made, have you ever seen one?

Thanks Trickle,
Unfortunately the 220 Turbo hatch isn't cheap due to its rareity :( The Coupe is though, but then far too common for my liking :D On the flip side most non-rover enthusiasts don't even realise Rover made a hatch version and assume it must be a home conversion. However I was genuinely surprised at the interest in it at a show I took it to this summer, I thought people would instantly dismiss it as a normal 200 and being too modern...but there were those few who went WOW!
PS :- I am girl ;)
SupraSteve 09-09-2006, 19:29 Fair play - I did say am I missing something. :)
They're still not my type of cars - i.e. to own - but I would genuinely be interested if say we were at a car show and you could talk me round them. Always good to speak to car enthusiasts about their pride & joy! :)
PS :- I am girl ;)
Oops. :o Gets coat.
I have a 1939 Daimler expected to complete its restoration later this year. (I'm also looking for a garage to rent.)

Why does owning a terrace house mean you can't have a collection of cars. With the exception of the Sierra all of our other cars live on the street.
Depends on the road I suppose. Be a bit anti social where I live as since they cracked down with wardens on the main road* its been pretty tight for parking nearby. I sometimes have to park a fair way from my house.
*Instead of sensibly double linning only one side they've forced those residents to park on the back roads (increasing danger to pedestrians imho)
ive got a 1948 ford pilot and im one lookout for either a 327 or 350 chevy engine also a 4 or 5 speed box:thumbsup:

It's the ordinary vehicles that were once common on our roads people tend to forget about and become quite rare.

It's the ordinary vehicles that were once common on our roads people tend to forget about and become quite rare.
We have two great examples of this.
The MK1 Fiesta used to be everywhere Now you are lucky if you see one a month.
The MK1 Sierra XR4i. Where have they all gone! The last time we saw another one was at Graves Park Motor Show, the time before that at Classic Ford Show, Santa Pod. And it was the same car. Lives in Rotherham somewhere.

Early sierra's are a rare sight these days, my uncle had a chocolate brown one on a Y reg when they first came out, I remember the seatbelt light reminder thought it was quite novel back then.
Also remember about 1988 going to London down the M1 in a friends dad's red Sierra XR4x4 and wondering if it was faster than my dads Cavalier SRI 130.
The seatbelt reminder light got a bit boring in the end so we took the bulb out. It's still got loads of flashing lights on the dash. They only flash when needed though.

Love this car! Would love to photograph it (no plate number) so I can draw it and add to portfolio (I'm sheffield based artist specializing in car/classic bike drawings) - this isn't a catch, no fees, I just don't want to copy too many pictures out of magazines. Interested? Danny

Every time over the years I've turned up on a bike you've coincidentally put you cars away.
However, if you want to leave the pinkslips with a mediator, we can always put your theory to the test . . . . .

So you still insist on your misguided delusion that those kit cars that you put American tractor engines into are as quick as a decent bike?
Come on man, commit yoursef to a trial.

I remember the Avenger Tiger when they were new (!) and they have always been a rare sight on the road.
It's nice to see one in such good condition. The Imp looks great too.

She is an animal having fitted a cavalier 2.0 16 valve turbo engine in her :D
When fully completed she should have around 300 bhp to play with, she is very rare as there where only 1275 ever built.

I hope to see your Mazda 1000 sometime Suzi. I have a soft spot for 70s Japanese cars for some reason.
My dad owned a 1973 Mazda 1800 (HOT 460L) it looked like a Triumph 2000. It was a nice car. Not seen one of those for many years - can't be many left.
Here's my current classic, a 1985 BMW M635CSi. I love this car's mix of style, performance and practicality.
The photo was taken near Hathersage last October.

Hammerhead 20-08-2010, 15:18 I increased the contrast, upped the saturation and darkened the sky as it was a morning shot and looked a bit 'flat'. Not much really, it was a lucky shot!

Rockers rule 29-01-2011, 19:55 1964 Reliant Regal, as seen on the first program of the last series of Top Gear (mines the Green one) despite the tong in cheek nature of the program, it was a good day out, free sandwiches and got to meet Mr Clarkson who actually was quite friendly. lots of projects (not all 3 wheelers some have less some have more), Daily driver a Carlton Diplomat, proper car none of that front wheel drive rubbish, the old Carlton's, Senators must be contenders for future classic.
Define Classic car?
Seems strange when you see something like an old Cavalier and it makes you smile?
