The doc thinks I have one  I'm taking medication but feel sick, bloated and in pain a lot of the time. Almost everything I eat except for yoghurt or really bland plain food like salad makes me feel rough.
Has anyone had this kind of ulcer and if so, what you reccommend to eat that won't set off the symptoms? I have been told milky stuff but apart from yoghurt I can't tolerate milky things at all.
All advice gratefully received.
Thanks

Hi FairyNormal. My father had one and so did I some years ago. My father's ulcer perforated and unfortunately he died but I was lucky to have the advantage of modern drugs which cured mine. Your doctor should be getting you an appointment for a gastroscopy so it can be seen exactly where your problem is. If the ulcer is in your stomach then I think Cimetidine (Tagamet) is usually pretty good at controlling the problem. If it's a little lower in or around the duodenum, then Ranitidine or similar is usually prescribed. The only problem is that prior to your gastroscopy you should not take any medication and this can be a problem. Generally avoid anything acidic including alcohol, fruit juices, etc. I found bread & potatoes helped by soaking up excess acid in the stomach. Highly spiced foods can also set it off and smoking is the worst thing of all. If you find the drugs you have are not helping then you must get back to your GP as quickly as possible as you probably need the dosage increased. Good luck.
Hi there
Research has proven that stomach and duodenal ulcers are actually caused by an infection with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, and treatment these days basically involves determining whether you have indeed got an ulcer (by a combination of gastroscopy and culture tests for H pylori) then a short intensive course of antibiotics to eradicate the bacteria, combined with a drug that slows down your production of acid (something similar to omeprazole or ranitidine usually).
So my advice would be to push through with your GP the identification of whether you have an ulcer- because as soon as you know for sure you can be symptom free within a couple of weeks and cured and medication free within a couple of months.
I wish you luck in getting this sorted out sooner rather than later- a trip back to your GP is in order.
After being in a lot of pain for months I was eventually sent for a gastroscopy, I was found to have had traces of ulcers in my stomach which were now polyps...after having tests to find out if these were malignant, I was put on tablets which slowly made me worse, I couldn't lay down at night as my chest hurt so much.
I was then sent for another test (a tube up my nose and into my stomach to measure the acid and had to be left in overnight) in which time I had to come off my original tablets and was improving.
I'm now taking 2 ranitidine tablets per day and my symptoms have gone although if I ever pig out on food, it does return, a healthy diet makes all the difference.

Fairy, I have a list of acid food stuffs I can email you. Pm me your email address and I'll whack it over to you.
Milk is a false neutral. It will help initially, then some time later, your acid levels will rise above what they were initially.
Eating things like melon will help, and drinking lots of water. And bizarrely enough, pineapple is really helping me at the moment with heartburn from being pregnant.

I am waiting for a gastroscopy since being admitted to hospital at the end of March. I am due back at the docs next Friday as he increased the medication the hospital gave from 10mg to 40mg of omeprazole and said to come back in a fortnight. I was in bed by 9:30 last night as I felt so sick and the pain in my stomach was chronic so I barely slept (again).
I'll pm you lizz, thanks
