Hi
Does anyone know of anywhere in South Yorkshire where you can play Dungeons & Dragons?
I have always been interested and know quite a bit about it but have never played, had a chance once but backed out as they wanted me to be a halfling(wish i had accepted now).
I'm looking for anywhere that would accept someone who is new and has a basic understanding, I have played RPG's on my P.C for years and just want to expand on this.
If anyone could help i'd be grateful.

I'm sure there's a roleplaying society at Sheffield Uni Students' Union. There certainly was when I was there, and I got involved in several D&D games. Maybe check them out?

Rich how would i get in touch with them? I'm a long way from being a student and have never been to uni

Would it be worth asking at one of the "Games Workshop" stores? There's one at the bottom of the Moor and one at Meadowhall.
They used to have noticeboards up for local game groups and probably still do.

I would advise against the Games Workshop approach. As the store caters for the 'tabletop lead figures' brigade, and kids element, you will have no luck finding serious rpg gamers there. Other stores such as Patriot (down by the Wicker) are a better option as they cater to the rpg market more.

I've been trying to get a regular gaming group together for quite some time now. In the past I have run various games, such as Warhammer RPG, Deadlands, Cyberpunk, Heroes Unlimited, and the lighter moments of Paranoia and Ghostbusters - all to no avail. Life seems to get in the way of gaming. Sadly I have practically given it up as a lost cause.

Now, I'm sure there may be others of the 'far from student' age on here who fancy giving it a shot. Perhaps that could work better - get some people interested and try to start up a game group ourselves. Heck, I'm open to any suggestions at the moment. Admittedly due to my work pattern it would be hard to get regular games done, but any would be better than none, eh?

So, any takers for seting up a small gaming group? Any old gamers who want back into the hobby, or new gamers who want to give it a shot (and I promise, I will never force anyone to be a halfling for 'game balance').

We could begin with Warhammer RPG (similar setting to D&D, so easy for new gamers to pick up).

List below those who are up for it. (I'm getting excited at the idea of gaming again now)

Well put me down for one as i'm getting quite exited now.
Been searching Google and Yahoo for ages and all i can find is war game clubs and i'm more for AD&D stuff.

Yeah...wargaming is okay, but the imagination of an rpg is so much better.

If we can get a few more interested I would be willing to run some games.

I would imagine the best way would be to go for one of their activities fairs. All the societies have stalls to try and attract new members. They tend to have them in the first week of each semester (which unfortunately would mean waiting till September).

I can have an ask around and see if there's any public advertising of exactly when... but the best approach may be to turn up to reception at the main students union building on whichever Monday (evening) is closest to September 20th and ask them when the activities fair is. Be aware though that the fair will be during working hours.

You could always try the Wargames Emporium in Orchard Square...it's one of the small units accessed via the stairs. They stock a pretty good selection of Roleplaying / Wargames / Boardgaming stuff and they seem to be good people.

The roleplay shop at the top of the Wicker (can't remember its name, but not the Space Centre) runs regular games and has details of groups you could join.

Good luck

This tread is for help trying to find people who are looking to get together to do something they enjoy not to have kn** heads take the p**s.
I've spoken to Patriot games at the wicker and they have a board that you can look at to see if anyone is looking to join a game or if you want to add a notice.

Someone mentioned games workshop earlier, if it's of any interest they have a proper gaming centre on amos road just behind meadowhall that doesn't attract all the kids. Not D&D but thought it might be of some help because it's quite hidden!

Can I just ask because I've seen people do this sort of thing before..
WHY?

I'm not being nasty please dont get me wrong- but let me in on what you guys and gals getup to because I am genuinely interested in what happens at a typical night of role playing.

What happens on a normal night of gaming?

Cheers!

Beakerzoid

A typical gaming night...

Plan for all to arrive at 5-ish.

Everyone turns up by 6 (grrrr)

Get all character sheets handed out, sort out game books, and then ask "Who has brought their dice?"

Spend 10 mins finding enough dice to go around (thankfully the GM usually has about 100 of every type - but nobody gets to use his 'glow in the dark' ones as they are his 'lucky dice')

Order pizza. Open alcohol.

Game begins whilst waiting for food to arrive. Starting off with a recap of story so far (sometimes with the added effect of theme music)

The game is run by the GameMaster (or Dungeon Master, or Storyteller - a term used by those embarrassed to say they are role-players....much like some people don't read 'comics', they read 'graphic novels'). They usually have a published adventure, or their own notes and ideas for an adventure, to work from. Describing the situation that the players find themselves in, he gives them freedom of choice to act within that setting (occasionally having to 'lure' the players back to the main story when they go off the beaten track).

For example: The setting is a windswept Inn on a dark, stormy night. After travelling for miles on foot, the group are finally getting a chance to put their feet up in comfort and safety. A few locals initially gave them the silent stare when they entered, but the place is back to being a general bustle of conversation and joviality. Over the din of merryment, you (pointing at the elven player, or anyone with sixth sense/sensitive hearing) are sure you hear a strangled cry for help, coming from outside in the storm. What do you do?

Now, at this point the players may say "Stay put in here...you are hearing things mate!" and by doing this would miss out on the opportunity to see the robed assassin flee into the night, dropping a silver dagger behind him (engraved with a clue to the identity).

A good GM will, if the players decide not to go out, let them continue their fun in the bar, and find a way to get the clue to them (city watch enter inn an hour later reporting the killing of the young girl - as descriptive as possible to make the players feel guilty - and show the blade. Asking for a posse to search the area, the players should, at this point, decide to assist.)

A bad GM will sit there and keep saying "But you heard someone scream. You should help!" and refuse to let the players make a choice.

Anyway, the game continues with the gang slowly uncovering the plot, and discovering more peril. Most adventures take a few sessions at least to complete, and are usually part of a longer campaign. At the end of each session, the players are given experience points as a reward for their actions and playing, which can be spent to improve their character.

Simply put, most game sessions are just a fun bit of escapism. I have made the mistake of being in a group who took it all too seriously at one point (and who always referred to the rules instead of just having fun). Whilst I use the rules from the books to aid me, I look more to have a good laugh, wind down, and just enjoy the game.

So, that's a general guide to a gaming night. No one has to dress up (unless they want to...I do have my 'gaming hat' which I wear).

The games come in many genres such as -
Warhammer / D&D : The typical fantasy setting. Dwarves, Orcs, Halflings, Elves....you know the score.
Cyberpunk: Think Bladerunner-esque settings with a manga style technology. Guns, cybernetics, leather coats.
Heroes Unlimited: Superheroes...spandex, powers, the works
Paranoia: Comedy game of a bizarre future where players are all clones, serving the demented computer in an underground city.
Deadlands: The wild west meets horror in this cracking game.

They are only a smattering of games, and there are many based on favourite shows/films also.

Some years ago several of my colleagues were interested in war gaming / RPG and I had great fuun playing the science fiction game 'Traveller' for some months.

We also did a game set in Medieval Japan, and some strategic role playing games around a 'hot war' between Russia and the Ukraine.

Great fun!

Can I just ask because I've seen people do this sort of thing before..
WHY?

Because it's there... :)

Seriously - it's like any hobby - people do it because they like doing it. Soccer fans follow their team, radio amateurs (like me) spend time trying to contact other amateurs around the world or build new radio gear, climbers climb mountains....

Don't panic too much about getting D&D handbook. Like I mentioned, I run Warhammer roleplay which is a similar setting, but different system. Easy to pick up, easy to get into. To get an idea about the Warhammer World check out http://www.warhammer.net/ (unofficial site) and http://www.blackindustries.com/default.asp?range=wfrp&template=news (official site)

Right, the question now is what day is best for people to play on? I am usuallly good mid-week, or Saturdays (after 4pm), but can adapt to other days from time to time.

Hi Moomin - I'm up for it too... Looks like the above thing never took off, but we can try and restart the interest! I can do Tuesday nights...
Anyone else in? Anyone want to run it?
Otherwise at a push, my other half could run it, we have cyberpunk, LOTR (not MERP sadly), All Flesh Must be Eaten (very cool and simple zombie game), plus a few others - I'll check it out.

Dark Moomin

Not really.

GW is table top war games, whereas this is role play. Both are based in different fantasy realms, and both use dice. Thats about all thats similar!

Is this like that games workshop stuff?

Na The Games Workshop stuff is wargamming - Lots of miniatures and table top terrain - I've got to be honest and admit I don't know a great deal about it as I never play warhammer or the like.

D&D (and other RPG's) rely on imagination (although miniatures are a useful aid) basically you take on the role of a character - simplistically Fighter/Thief/Magic User/Cleric and are given a situation by the referee - you may have to solve a puzzle, slaughter a beastie (often from mythology) or talk your way out of trouble. It's all the things you see in fantasy films or read in books.

Good laugh if the group dynamics are good.

I could do tuesdays, have only playe a very small amount of these things - more of an educated noob than a previous player type. But happy to play anything. Used to have a very fun looking one about teddy bear superheros, your attributes were based on the type of soft toy you brought along! Dark Moomin

I've just read through the post fully - there's looks to be about 7 people on it who have professed to be keen at some stage.

I'm actually in a group of 5/6 at the moment (most in their 30's+) and one of them is female (cc TheMoog's comment that she wasn't allowed to join a group on this basis) and it works very well - you get quite a different and more balanced perspective. She is very keen on the roleplaying side of things as opposed to just hack and slash which balances one of the other members who's approach often is to run off and clobber the first thing he comes across - Jon if you read this ;)

Only problem is that it's difficult to get everyone together with various commitments and sometimes can go 3-4 weeks between sessions.

A second group doing weeknight gaming would be ideal which seems to fit with others professed choices.

We play at one of the couples house which creates a more friendly atmosphere I think - did you (or anyone) get as far as discussing venues in the previous attempt to get a group going?

I've tried to summarise where we're at at the moment as I think there's enough interest to start up in the near future:

The recent communication (ie the last week) has involved:-

Myself
TheMoog and her other half (Tuesday Night or Weekend)
Harken77 - who's offering to host
Dark Moomin (Mon - Thurs Evening)

That's Five in total - 4 players + DM which is enough to run a group.

Also Leg Luvva appears to be still interested (Last Post 12/11/06)

Further back Kevanos, Beakerzoid and Big Gav have also expressed interest at some stage.

So it appears we've enough people and a venue. (Up to 8 players + DM)

I've emailed Harken77 (yesterday) - so he's got my email address - could the others above (or anyone else interested) send their contact details to him provided that's OK with him - Harken77 could you confirm this is OK.

Harken77 if you forward the addresses of people to me I'll try to keep the momentum going - which I think is the key to getting a group up and running.

Alternatively, if I get to 10 posts I'll PM people directly.

Slightly off topic but i still have around 50 lead D&D figures if anyones interested in purchasing PM me

On topic - Have a go its a real thrill once you get into it and best of all is quite cheap.

I have even considered renting one of our rooms out for this use as that was always our problem where to play.

If someone is seriously interested in daily/weekly arrangements for a room let me know if there is enough interest i will arrange some space

Hi

We've now got a group up and running - we are playing a 1st Edition AD&D game set in Greyhawk.

The group consists of 6 of us at the moment and we aim to play on a Wednesday evening (generally) - from 6:15ish to 9:45ish

We are a mixed group - mixed sex, ages vary 20 to 38, generally fairly inexperienced.

We could accommodate another member who is interested in playing (no experience necessary) in about a month's time, and further down the line (I'm aware of how these threads can become active again after being passive for a few months) there'll be a vacancy as one of the members is in a "gap" year and will be leaving these shores.

Anyone interested PM me.

Nathan07
26-01-2007, 16:07
We are a mixed group
We have also different nationalities in our group: I'm from Germany and I'm enjoying it very much. So, to all German-speaking people around Sheffield, here is a translation about what Jacko said:

"Hi

Interessiert? Schreib eine PM an Jacko!"

Hi

We have now lost our German Gap Year Student - many thanks for his input over the last few months - as a result, there is a vacancy for anyone interested.

The group is still going strong, there are still 6 of us playing at the moment, and to reiterate, we play in a separate room of a city centre pub close to the trams and buses - we start fairly early after some tea (around 6 to 6:30ish and finish before 10 - day tends to be Wednesdays) - so people tend to come straight from work.

Anyone interested get either get in touch via PM or on here.

Hi historian,

I'm considering starting to run the Paizo 'Rise of the Runelords' Adventure Path soon. I have one interested player and perhaps a newbie who'd join. I'm interested in having 4 or 5 players and playing roughly fortnightly, either on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Does that sound like it'd interest you (or interest anyone else!)?

It'd be D&D 3.5 with a reasonable focus on core rules, but I'd be open to allowing various supplements. Drop me a PM if that sounds like it'd be good for you. In fact, drop me a PM anyway: I'm hoping to organise 4E things as soon as it comes out and as I've only just moved to Sheffield I've not met many people interested in D&D yet!

Sorry pedr, but things got a great deal busier for me of late and I haven't had time to reply. Did you get a group together? Sadly, we tend to get together on Sundays, average about 3 times a month. We all work and can't really depend on having a week day's evening free. Anyway, I hope you got something going between then and now.

Hi

I was wondering if any of these gaming groups are still going and have room for another player ?
I haven't played in years but would love to pick the hobby up again. Especially D&D or Rolemaster / MERP

Hi

Our group is still going strong (just over 2 years) - 8 people currently so we couldn't really accommodate any more players at the moment.

However, I also attend (on a Thursday) with a separate club who run several different games on both Wednesday and Thursday - if you want, I will pass on your contact details to the guy in charge to see what games are running and have space.

Any roleplayers who are still looking for a group ROTTOK meet at the Queens Head in Sheffield on Wednesday and Thursday nights 6.30 on.

We have a forum on the Wargames Emporium site and are on Facebook as ROTTOK.

Hope to see you guys soon...

Hey,
I live in sheffield and am looking for a group of people with which to play some D&D. Preferably I'd rather join an already established group as that way I know that it will become a regular thing instead of a once off, however I'm up for a new game if other people want one.
Here's a little about me:
I'm 23, and work in sales, but don't worry people call me wanting to buy so I won't try and sell you anything :P.
I played D&D for a few years with some mates where I used to live but then moved away.
My character will be evil, most likely a necromancer and definately insane. That's not to say he will kill indiscriminantly, it's just that he's a little...unstable at times and is the type of person that when you make a joke about them you're never sure if they'll laugh or try and kill you...though with such a creepy laugh you're not entirely sure which you WANT him to do either! (Anyone who has read Raymond E Fiest; I want him to be very much like Sidi/Leso Varen)
My game style is very open minded and I have a very good imagination (I also write fantasy novels in my spare time) so will need a DM who is open to new ideas and a firm grasp of the game mechanics so that they can not only understand what I'm trying to do, but also think of ways that I can achive it and the prerequasites they'd want me to achive.

Beyond that I live near crookes and don't drive yet so the nearer the better, however I have unlimited travel in south yorkshire so I can get anywhere given enough time and my own place if people want to meet up at mine.

Any other questions please ask
