View Full Version : People who condemn themselves
Right, i have a little gripe!
I see a lot of overweight people in Sheffield these days.. And this is my problem, when these people make no effort to lose weight! I dont mind if they say hey no problem im proud of who i am and what i look like! But its when they start saying things like i cant! When they clearly can! I used to live in Australia across from a McDonalds.. So what do you think i ate all the time? So ive come a long way!
Does this make sense!?!
How do you know they make no effort to lose weight? How do you know that the overweight people you're disparaging on here haven't already lost a few stones, but have a couple more to go? Maybe they're at the gym more than you are.
Alternatively, maybe they're comfortable with their size and don't wish to conform to some artificially imposed idea of what is an acceptable shape, size and weight.
SpiderPete 02-05-2006, 18:21 Oh dear Ryan........... I cannot believe you started this thread.... I won`t comment as I am a fat bitch ............ I shall leave the comments to the others
Plain Talker 02-05-2006, 18:23 Right, i have a little gripe!

nno sense at all, ryan, ducks,
one, if they want to eat what the heck they like, that's their prerogative.
two, it's THEIR problem, no-one elses.
three, you are making asumptions about these people that may be totally unfounded.
PT
Swan_Vesta 02-05-2006, 18:23 Don't worry Ryan. I have a similar gripe when it comes to the overweight who make no effort to aid their situation by eating breakfast, dinner and tea in McDonalds.
If they really wanted to change then they'd eat salad and fish, they'd do some excercise or they'd take up a sport. As it is the blubbery chubsters are content to wheeze their way to an early grave while the most productive thing they do all day is produce a foetid cheese type substance between their folds of corpulent flesh.
I used to weigh in at approx 17.5 stone many years back, I decided that enough was enough and took more excercise, stopped eating crap and bought my weight down to 13.5 stone. It can be done, Just step away from the big mac and all will be well.
Hecate: Im just talking in general that you see people, and i will think how have u let yourself get to this stage.. Yes, they may be making effort, but im not saying im not expecting everyone to be thin.. As im not myself.. Im just pointing out it doesn't take much effort to eat healthily! If they are comfortable with there size then great! Im not having a go at that! Im Saying the people that do complain they cant lose weight or haven't got the motivation!
Peter: Ive started a thread for a reason to make a point thats why people start them isn't it  .... Your fat?
Swan_Vesta 02-05-2006, 18:27 However, from a different stand point, I smoke. I make no effort to quit (save the token 'That's it I've had enough' phase I go through once every nine months). I drink. I actually do well in the fact that I regulate the amount I consume and have decent periods of absention.
I supppose it's what your bug bears are at the end of it. Mine is fat people. I'm sure that someone else's is a supercillious pint holding smoker.
SpiderPete 02-05-2006, 18:29 .... Your fat?
I am hurt now ......... :(

Yeah its their problem, but the point being others will be making the effort to look/feel better..
Im not making assumptions.. Im making a point! :)

It was a joke saying your not. :)

Ryan, have you seen the self-help section in Waterstones? The mountains of diet books heaving on the popular psychology shelves?
Many people find that losing weight is not just a simple matter of eating healthily and exercising more; there are psychological issues involved too. For some, food can be as addictive as nicotine, and they might eat for reasons other than hunger. It can be a lot more complicated than you imagine.

No, dont think ive seen that section.. yeah food can be addictive, but the end of the day its a matter of willpower as with all addictions. And there is cures for it. I mean ive seen TV shows of people being lifted out of there bed by the fire brigade.. I mean come on people, dont you come to a stage where u think enough is enough!?!
youwhatref 02-05-2006, 18:38 I know what you are getting at Ryan. You do get bigger ppl who say they cant lose the weight but what they mean is cant be arsed to lose the weight but wish they could. I aint got a six pack and I aint no hunk but i'm part of the 'couldn't give a Donald Duck' brigade.
I could simply spend two hours in the gym watching some meat head grunt away or put my feet up with popcorn and *Diet* Coke :D and watch a film. And it aint the treadmill i choose. I could get a six pack but cant be bothered and haven't got the discipline. :D
Eating healthily isn't always easy either. Not everyone out there has the basic level of cooking skills needed to prepare good, healthy food at home. For many sadly, processed, shop bought stuff is all they're used to and all they know how to prepare. There are many reasons why people may be overweight. We all have our vices...
No, dont think ive seen that section.. yeah food can be addictive, but the end of the day its a matter of willpower as with all addictions...
If dealing with addicts was just a question of telling them to get a bit of willpower, therapists and psychiatrists all over the world would be out of a job...
shoeshine 02-05-2006, 18:44 I now know why they brought out widescreen TV's.........

Now that is a very good point. Not wishing to take the thread off on a tangent, but eating healthily can also be expensive. Compare the price of some of the 'food' sold at Iceland with those of the items on the fruit and vege counter in Tesco...
I understand what you mean... another example is... when people go on about how skint they are but there they are spend! spend! spend!
What makes me laugh is when you hear... "Hi... can i have a double big mac... extra large fries... oh and a large DIET coke please... eh... what... sorry!? did i hear that right? what do they think the diet coke's gonna do... turn the food into diet food on the way down... or somethin! I dunno... :hihi:

That's me though Shaz  More because i prefer the taste :D But true it does mean i can go Super Size :D
rubydazzler 02-05-2006, 19:15 At least someone eating or drinking isn't going to ruin anyone else's health whereas the received wisdom is that smoking almost certainly will.
I used to be slender .... now I'm gorgeously a-lot-more-than-plump ... I should lose a few stones, but quite honestly - like most people ... I look upon a good spread of food with far more lust that I ever look upon a lover!!
*sings offkey ...."Food. glorious food, there's nothing quite like it!!"
*goes to investigate what's in the fridge tonight .... :P
funkymiss 02-05-2006, 19:25 Angel some people just prefer diet coke... I've heard people say this before but I always choose diet over normal just because I prefer it! As for McDonald's I can't remember the last time I had one...!
I do see your point Ryan. No such thing as 'I can't lose weight'. A small minority will find it difficult but with real effort and a healthy approach, anyone can do it.
As for the imposed image thing and how people feel they are beign told they have to be thin to suit an ideal... It's important for your health! I think sometimes people hide behind the 'I won't conform' thing, just so they don't have to lose the weight...? At the end of the day, there are health risks with being overly thin or fat.
funkymiss 02-05-2006, 19:45 Erm, ok......
spyro2000 02-05-2006, 19:59 I am a fat bitch
Your not fat :)
I agree with FunkyMiss - I prefer diet coke. I know it is not good for me but the sugar in real coke just seems to cling to my teeth and I hate that feeling.
I agree weight can be lost if you try hard and long enough. It is not easy but it's possible.
I'd like to shift a few pounds but not a chance until I have finished eating up all our Easter Eggs.
But with the nicer weather and lighter nights I'll be walking more, perhaps to the pub for a pint of diet coke ( or a big glass of wine if it's an extra long walk)
SallyLaLaLa 02-05-2006, 20:11 Hmm, Ryan I'm noticing from your profile that you are 21. Wait until you're thirty doing a desk bound job mate, that's all I'm saying...........
Hmm, Ryan I'm noticing from your profile that you are 21. Wait until you're thirty doing a desk bound job mate, that's all I'm saying...........
And when you find contentment in your life .... nothing piles the pounds on like married life !
SallyLaLaLa 02-05-2006, 20:23 I know love, anyway he'll learn. I'd love to see his waist when he's 35. Actually no, that's a silly thing to say because he won't have one.
Well a few years ago I stopped smoking and put on more than a few pounds......
Fell in love and put on a few more pounds.....
now i sit on my 32 year old ass in a 9-5 job.....
Never eat MacDonald’s but always have diet coke (tastes better)
And I have never been happier :)
There is more to life than how we look
PS I do walk to work 2-3 times a week which is a 40 min walk, this allows me to enjoy a couple of white chocolate chip cookies or some cheesecake ice cream :D
Seems the bigger you are the more contented you are...
Hmm, Ryan I'm noticing from your profile that you are 21. Wait until you're thirty doing a desk bound job mate, that's all I'm saying...........
This made me laugh! Yes i am 21 and 10st.. Good observation skills! I like your arguement! Saying wait til im a desk bound job.. Im already at one now! Jumping the gun a bit aren't ya! You'd wanna see my waist when im 35.. haha classic! I might be 21.. But ive lived a little, trust me!!
Oh...
two, it's THEIR problem, no-one elses.
And, inevitably, it will be the NHS' problem :)
Which get's on to smokers blah blah blah.

Exactly you have lived ! Sheds the pounds without you realising that living it on the wild side. Wait till you are sat in on the internet cos' you can't go out cos' of the kids etc...
Then you'll understand the lure of biccie tin...... :)
Hmm, Ryan I'm noticing from your profile that you are 21. Wait until you're thirty doing a desk bound job mate, that's all I'm saying...........
I've done a desk-bound job for 4 years. I eat my fair share of junk food and take-aways but I'm not fat. Why? Because I take responsibility for my weight and appearance and make sure I stay in good shape for both my own health and my pride!
rubydazzler 02-05-2006, 20:47 Well, guys - this is all totally right and proper ... an out of condition man is an abomination on the face of the earth! Whereas women ... well we're supposed to be soft and cuddly .... :D

I'm tired of hearing this myth. Supermarket fruit and veg is tasteless and expensive. I see people shopping on the Moor, where there are several fruit and veg stalls and a greengrocer's shop round the corner. The produce is fresh and cheap and the only reason that The Poor who populate that end of town don't buy it is because they don't want to. Cheap shops like Jack Fulton sell plain frozen fish and chicken fillets. I am on benefits. And I eat like a horse. And I am not fat. All my meals are fresh, simple to prepare and cheap. Nobody taught me how to cook. I taught myself. (If people really want to make an effort to learn, they can get a book out of the library.) It is entirely possible. And is anybody really so ignorant that they don't know how to make a salad?
One reason many of the poor people eat crap is because they are inverted snobs. They consider fresh food as vaguely posh and despicable, and don't want to even make an effort. This is their preogative, but it's a different matter when they force feed the same crap down their children's throats.

How will i be sat on the internet come the time i have kids.. Not sure if your taking this as your experience.. But this definately what i will be doing.. come this time ill still be eating healthily, i aim to live as long as possible.
Ill understand the lure of the fruitbowl my little darling :)

Good point... Laying on the settee chucking grapes into my mouth is a great form of exercise
I'm no skinny minnie, i aint huge either though, earlier on i was thinking about starting up going to the gym again soon...cut to a few hours later, just had half a dominoes pizza and am now eating haribos sweets that i picked up when i went to get some petrol. I have good intentions!
The only thing i don't agree with is people who feed their kids absolute rubbish everyday:rant: this big woman used to live near me and her child was massive...reason...most days and this isn't a lie you would see them come back home in the car and were had they been - macdonalds! also macdonalds from where i used to live was a 10 minute walk tops!
Good point... Laying on the settee chucking grapes into my mouth is a great form of exercise
Its a start i guess! ;)
I'm tired of hearing this myth...
It isn't a myth. If you were referring to my comment about comparing the price of Iceland food and the price of veg and fruit in supermarkets, you will find that in many instances the healthier option is more expensive.
...Supermarket fruit and veg is tasteless and expensive...
it certainly isn't tasteless. All my veg comes from Tesco, Sainsbury's et al, and it's delicious. I also find the prices comparable, if not cheaper than the smaller greengrocers. Additionally, the supermarkets offer a wider array of products and are open at a more convenient time; not to take this thread off at a tangent, of course.
...I see people shopping on the Moor, where there are several fruit and veg stalls and a greengrocer's shop round the corner. The produce is fresh and cheap and the only reason that The Poor who populate that end of town don't buy it is because they don't want to...
Are you saying that they don't want to shop at the veg stalls and greengrocers, preferring supermarkets; or that 'The Poor' simply don't want to eat healthily?
...Cheap shops like Jack Fulton sell plain frozen fish and chicken fillets. I am on benefits. And I eat like a horse. And I am not fat. All my meals are fresh, simple to prepare and cheap. Ah, I see. You think it's because they don't want to eat healthily. Could you generalise just a little more, do you think? Maybe if you tried really hard you could be a little more offensive. What utter nonsense! Do you really believe that 'The Poor' care so little about the health of themselves and that of their children that inverted snobbery is the reason they shop at Iceland and eat food which is less nutritious than it could be? Maybe it could have something to do with having to feed a family on a small amount of money, coping with the demands of small children who might not be amenable to eating veg and salad as often as they perhaps should and possibly a lack of awareness about the nutritional value of certain foods.
purdyamos 02-05-2006, 22:09 Hecate, I know the poor, I'm from the poor, I've been surrounded by the poor, talked to the poor, and from what I've read in your posts, I think I understand the poor better than you. Not the excuse-laden Guardian-style myth, but the reality. I know that healthy food does NOT have to be expensive. People walk past the fresh food stalls on the market because they do not want to eat that sort of food. And many of them are so poor they have to smoke 20 fags a day to cope with the stress of not being able to afford proper food. (And by the way, stopping smoking is easy too if you read the Allen Carr thread). I really don't see why my post is in any way offensive when I am living proof that eating healthy on small funds is possible. A large number of lower class families whose children eat crap have the latest playstation, satellite TV etc. And I've never ever met anyone who isn't aware of the nutritional value of things like fruit and veg compared with, say, chips or sweets. I don't speak nonsense. I speak from experience. I've lived it. I get the impression you haven't.
The levels of poor spelling and grammar that I sometimes see on here often makes me think some people would be better off if they turned the computer off and went to read a few good books and possibly get an education. I've not a lot of time for people who like to display a lack of intelligence like it is a badge of pride. But just saying that makes me sound like a complete self-righteous g*t. Likewise, judging people on their size, colour or the state of their liver can make someone come across as a self-righteous g*t.
Pass the chips...
cloudybay 02-05-2006, 22:30 Couldn't agree more dear, however, some of the diatribes i refuse to read on here make my eyes glaze over. Keep it simple if you really want to get your point across. If you want to look intellectual and stupid, post pages and pages.........................:D
Purdyamos, it's surprising - and a little amusing - how far from accurate your impresions are. I don't intend to debate with you which one of us knows the poor better. I'm more than happy for each of us to have our own particular views on the subject. I must be getting mellow in my old age.

I'll accept...and pass it on.
I've yet to see 'Supersize Me', the documentary, but I believe that in certain areas in the US, especially Texas. It is almost a 'culture' to be extremely overweight. People *are* proud to eat a 12oz steak and more. Within certain areas, fast food is the cheapest of option. Then there's also other factors which comes into play, like how some people starved through the war, so they adopt this eating mentality of eating every meal to be their last. So they overeat.
Many many reasons. Not always a simple case of, 'I want to lose weight, and therefore I physically and mentally can'. No, it isn't.
without wanting to sound politically incorrect, I think people who are overweight tend to make some effort.....alot of them like to wear tracksuits :)
Z

Z
There is nothing wrong with tracksuits thankyou.. I wear one now and again as a warm-up suit when I go to badminton, there is nothing wrong with my Nike warmup suit.
I am overweight by the way- or as doctors would say- OBESE.
At 17 stones I think doctors seem to think that I am all fat.. when the fact is that 90% is muscle which I have developed over the years.. yet doctors dont seem to recognise this when you stand on some scales- if I was that fat - I wouldnt be galloping around a badminton court at full pelt without losing my breath whilst and I have to say skinnier peers are taking 10 min breaks between games where as I can go with just a drink- a wipe down with a towel and its on again.
The deal I have with overweight people is that- yes we could slim down if we wanted to, however, I am quite content as I am and I dont think people would try and mug me in the street due to my physique now as opposed to being a 9st weakling like I used to be.
I think people who are overweight tend to make some effort.....alot of them like to wear tracksuits.

We have people like this in the office as well and I gorge myself on whatever I fancy because at the end of the day.. thin people die everyday as well as fat people :)
I am not going to stop eating McDonalds because they might make me fat- hell no- I dont see why I should give up the simple pleasures in life just because some doctors says I might be at a risk of a heart-attack.
My uncle was as fit as a fiddle, ran marathons and jogged every day- was 10st I believe - yet died in his early forties from a heart attack.
So not just overweight people die from it- fit people die from heart attacks as well... so its inconclusive at best.
There is nothing wrong with tracksuits thankyou.
Agreed, if you are actually engaging in some kind of sporting activity. No-one would wear a wetsuit to go shopping, they would look stupid, as do people in tracksuits who have obviuously never even run for a bus.

My favourite thing to do in Waterstones is to watch people going up in the lift instead of using the stairs then walking to the diet book bit, hee hee!
SallyLaLaLa 03-05-2006, 12:02 This made me laugh! Yes i am 21 and 10st.. Good observation skills! I like your arguement! Saying wait til im a desk bound job.. Im already at one now! Sorry but you and Gaz B have just made the point I made seem even more valid, you're both 21 and you think that just because you're skinny now you always will be, but it doesn't work like that. When you're in your early twenties you're naturally thin and most twenty year olds are skinny without any effort. The majority of 20 year olds think they'll stay like that forever but you don't, if you eat the same things and do the same amount of exercise in your thirties you'll put on weight, even more when you're older than that. Once you get past thirty you have to work twice as hard for half the results. You'll see in about ten years.
I weighed 7 stone until I was 25, now I weigh 9, my husband weighed 10 stone until he was 29 (and he's six foot) and now he weighs about 12 and a half not exactly fat but we both thought we would stay the same with not a pick on us forever.
Once you get past thirty you have to work twice as hard for half the results. You'll see in about ten years.
Is that a scientific fact or another old wives tale ?
Is that a scientific fact or another old wives tale ?
Metabolic rate can decrease as a person gets older. That is, the rate at which calories are burnt off through day to day activity, even sitting at the computer. If you don't increase your activity to compensate, you might find that as you get older eating the same amount of food will result in you putting on weight instead of maintaining whatever your current weight is.
We have people like this in the office as well and I gorge myself on whatever I fancy because at the end of the day.. thin people die everyday as well as fat people :)

If someone is happy with their weight and the lifestyle they lead its fine but to talk about losing weight and talk about health issues they have and then wolf down fatty food is hypocritical. (everyone loves food that aint too good for us but have it in small doses or we resist temptation) too much of anything good is bad.
Heart attacks aren't just common in fat people as you rightly said smoking/heredity diseases and other factors can cause this.
So what do you think i ate all the time? So ive come a long way!
Does this make sense!?!
Of course ya came a long way.. from the other end of the globe!
Ok.. i know i'm a chubby little runt.. and i don't give a toss what anyone else thinks.
If i want to lose weight, i shall.
Its whats on the inside that counts. (and i don't mean them kebabs an stuff :suspect: )

Hang on, it seems as tho your making assumptions! How are most 20 year olds skinny without making an effort..? Of course you have to work twice as hard when your 30 thats because your metabolism slows down! Isn't that obvious:rolleyes: .. How will i see in 10 years.. It will be the amount of effort i put.. As I'm not a mod you can tell me to shut it- but was there really any need for that?
I mean come on- maybe people didnt have the same eductation that you had or maybe they are just naturally bad english wise?
It does not mean there is a lack of intelligence in the posts I dont think just because someone spells something incorrectly?
Couldn't agree more dear, however, some of the diatribes i refuse to read on here make my eyes glaze over. Keep it simple if you really want to get your point across. If you want to look intellectual and stupid, post pages and pages.........................:D
And I am not being particularly picky- but as a mod- you shouldnt be allowing people to harass other members for their supposed 'lack of intelligence' just because their spelling might be off.
Just a thought
No offence intended :)
