I was told by someone that works in Meadowhall that Primark have been refused a unit due to M & S and others being against them opening in the Mall, could be just gossip - but it did come from a person in management.!!!

It's probably more to do with the competition than the lowering of standards.

Meadowhall management don't want Primark in Meadowhall.

Visitors to Meadowhall are split into different shopper profiles numbering from 1 to 5 depending on background, earnings, age etc, and Meadowhall have a low percentage of the high earners (no. 5's) (big spenders) this is the customer they most want to attract now. Have you ever wondered what the market reasearchers are asking when you go to Meadowhall?

The lower profile customer (no. 1's) i.e. you and me they want to keep but don't feel the need to cater to what we want as we can get it on the High Street.

Sadly Primark won't be coming to Meadowhall. Shame, I work at Meadowhall and could go down every day in my dinner hour!

I can rememebr reading somewhere that the average disposable income within an hours drive of the Trafford Centre was twice that of within an hour of Meadowhall.. which just goes to show.. or something...

I hate the snobbish attitudes towards Primark - If I have £50 quid to spend on clothes I can either by a top and some jeans in New Look or buy 6 outfits in Primark - either way I still spend £50!! It proper gets on me nerves!:loopy:

I saw the title of this thread and just went HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA

No seriously. Primark in Meadowhall? It'll never happen.

I'm not snobbish by the way, I just know that there will be some Meadowhall shoppers who would be, thus I wouldn't be surprised to hear that they'd said, "No, it might lower the tone".

I completely agree with absynthfairy... if I had £50 I'd rather go to Primark (aka Student Heaven) and get loads of clothes than only be able to buy one top from some of these other high street shops. Rip-offs. How much does it friggin cost them to make a top anyway?!?!?

Well if by some miracle they do get to Meadowhall, could someone please ask them to employ someone to tidy up the place a bit more often? I went for the first time on Saturday in town, it was like a massive jumble sale, piles and piles of stuff all over the floor, strewn everywhere in fact, and you couldn't get round to see most of the stuff as it was so packed. Congratulations to them as they've obviously got a a gap in the market covered, and do some really good lines at amazing prices, but commiserations as people will soon get fed up of the bun fight.

I think that's part of the reason MH don't want one - it gets scruffy very quickly and hardly makes the centre look good. ALthough anything would look better than the dark blue painted shop units that used to be Smiths and a bit of Allders - they could have used a light colour in such a dark corner!!!

You try keeping a shop that size that busy with the kind of clientelle primark attract tidy and then you'll realise just how hard it is. I dont work at primark but i work at new look and on bank holiday monday we had the same problem you tidy one section turn your back and its messy again!

as i stated before sainsburys is going to be a mall extension meadowhall management have said so themselves and work to make it that way has already begun

with regards to harvey nichols in meadowhall i just don't see it for 2 reasons

1) store is too small
2) they announce future projects and there's no mention of meadowhall

I've been to Primark in Manchester and Birmingham and neither are as untidy as the one in town. They're both huge too, so are much better than ours. And if you think it can't get much worse, Rotherham's is much more untidy.....

Also, the thing about Next is true. I work there too and it is moving into Sainsbury's.

amen to that - i get dragged into Primark sometimes by the missus and no matter which one it is (they are all the same) the state of the place would stop me from buying anything

1) clothes all over the floor getting trod on, run over then put back eventually on the shelf
2) Jumble sale mentallity to stacking the shelf invariably meaning that clothes are taken from the bottom and all the others are tipped up
3) hangers, tags, qrappers all over the floor
4) not enough staff to keep on top of the house keeping (is it a Primark policy to only have about 6 staff on shopfloor yet 30 on the tills??)
5) staff that look like they have come straight from school and either have shirts half hanging out half tucked in?

Its a god awful place, if i ever had to buy anything from there then i would wash it before i wore it.

I resist the urge to ask for the manager in order to ask them if they feel that the presentation of the store is acceptable to customers.

New look in Retail world Parkgate has just opened and that has a mens section, well good value for money

I was hoping a Primark would open at Crystal Peaks but alas it was a Peacocks!!

I agree that the one in town and in Rotherham is really shabby.

The only one I've ever visited which has a nice layout and has always appeared tidy is in the Hill Street Centre in Middlesbrough.

I think it is purely down to both the dedication of the staff and the mentality of the shoppers - obviously it is proof for me that the staff and shoppers in Middlesbrough have standards!!

I went to Primark in Doncaster at the weekend. A friend had mentioned to me that they had some cheap bikinis so I decided to have a look when I spotted the shop. Oh my god! I had read the comments on this thread before about different branches being untidy but didn't realise just how bad it was. There was stuff thrown everywhere, all over the floor, being trodden on by rain soaked feet. What's up with these people? None of the other shops were in that state and the same people must go in them as well! My first and last time!

Hate to point this out gals, but it tends to be 'our' side that is in such a state. Kids section is neat, mens stuff isn't too bad, ladies section looks like a heard of rampaging water buffalo have been thru it.........:hihi:

23-05-2006, 12:37 PM
Well, i know primark can be a mess on a saturday afternoon, especially near christmas, but the kids section is usually fine. Some us thank god for Primark, i can't afford Next, New look, and have never been in Harvey whatsits. Three kids, low income. Afew clothes on the floor and a scrum at christmas i can live with, i think some folk on here need to wake up to the real world of many people, primark wouldn'y exist if there wsn't a demand, if you don't like it , DON'T GO IN.

I thought it was just the one that I go in here in Bournemouth that was messy so it was good to read these comments that it's not just us.....and US it is really, isn't it?
Perhaps it's cos it's cheap that we think we can just chuck it around and not bother to pick it up when we drop something. I have seen it myself and it does annoy me.
I have never been in and not seen a queue, so someone must like it.:hihi:

If you read the post the vast majority of comments is regarding the appearance of the place. It doesnt take long to put something back where you find it (on the floor in most cases)

It aint just a saturday afternoon its a mess most of the time.

when get things from a pile dont just pull it out try lifting the pile removing your item and placing it back

When staff are stood around (and notice i criticised the management staffing policy not the staff) working their backsides off trying to keep the massive section clean they have been given, why not try helping them by putting your stuff back instead of just dropping stuff then doing nothing

If you want cheap clothes of a decent quality ASDA is price comparable and certainly a lot better in quality, layout of store, cleanliness.

I wake up to the real world every day, Primark exists becuase yes there is a demand for low cost clothes but the shop itself could do so much more if it presented itself in a manner which draws people to it. Like I said ASDA and now Tesco seem to manage keeping a store clean why cant Primark?

I am chuffed to bits that Primark is moving into Meadowhall!!

If Poundland is in Meadowhall why shouldn't Primark!! Snobs!!

I think Primark is great, particularly for kids clothes which inevitably will get ''hammered'' or ''go out of fashion'' within weeks of buying!!

I even admit to picking up the odd item for myself and normally I am a Next shopper!!!

Hey...at the end of the day if Primark can get a mention in many fashion magazines and daytime TV shows they can't be all that bad eh!!

I agree, I have often got an emergency pair of work trouser etc there. Its great for cheap and cheerful work stuff, vest tops etc. And hand bags and belts too. TBH the Sheffield one is probably the wort I've been to, not really in terms of the mess, but they have so little variety of stock, the ones in Boro and Newcastle are much much better. Hopefully Meadowhall will get a nice big one too.

shopping-centre.co.uk/news/fullstory.php/aid/1290/British_Land_signs_new_Meadowhall_anchors.html

Due to open in Summer 2007, the reconfiguration will see a former Sainsbury's store redeveloped as mainstream retail. It forms part of a £91m upgrade at Meadowhall which will include the refurbishment of all the main mall areas.

On the upper level the two stores [Primark and Next] will front onto a new mall leading to a spacious atrium. In addition to the new anchors the development will create another two-level store of 22,000 sq ft and four smaller units of around 3,000 sq ft each.

I like Primark. Sooo perhaps Meadowhell should have an area/lane in the centre called peasantville row. Then if those that choose not to be seen even passing it can avoid going down peasantville row, and those of us that really don't give a toss can have a choice of where we choose to shop. Yes I know the stuff isn't the best of quality but hey a lot of people shop there. I have more sense than money, so come on meadowhell let primark cross the threashold.

Thanks, a year is a long time to wait if it doesnt open any sooner :( Its more convenient for me is Meadowhall, I wouldnt have to hide their bags in my bag in case of being spotted!!:suspect: haha although i think 99% of the people i know love the place!!

I'm proud of buying my socks and pants there! :)

What I cant understand is why its taking them so long to convert it, they built the whole damn site in less time!!!

Exactly, the Primark in town looks like it cost about £20 to decorate, it must be the whole "jumble sale" feel they're trying to create.

Another reason not to go to Meadowhall :)

Dunno if anyone's already said this as I can't be arsed to read all replies but yes there will be a Primark in Mhell, up where WH Smiths on top floor is, or underneath it. There are signs up saying so with the Primark logo on it, think Next aswell (one up, one down?). Nowt wrong wi Primark, used to be cr*p but now great, even features on fashion shows etc- just cheaper than other overpriced stores.

^^ You should go and have a look at Manchesters TK-Maxx then.

lol I have to agree with this: you have NEVER ever seen a shop so busy, unorganised with the largest amount of rude people ever! No-one has manners, they push and shove; all for a quids worth of knickers!

Leeds is pretty much the same but the Manchester one beats them all!

It also is the shop with the most thefts from! GMP are trying to do something about the shoplifting but I doubt they will be successful. Last I heard the only suggestion was to close it down or move it away from Piccadilly.

Long live primark - I love it for socks n belts and whatnot but I really don;t like the shopping experience due to chavs and lack of staff working at the tills - and the ones who do are rude, obnoxious and very dim!

Drat, now I'm confused.

I'm NOT a chav, because I don't use text speak (not even when I'm texting, I use proper words and proper punctuation like wot you should do).

On the other hand, I'm looking forward to shopping in Primark (not that they have a great deal in my large size, but the accessories are good) so that appears to make me a chav.

Are there any other chav indicators I could use to decide whether I'm a chav or not? Oh, and is there a special word for girlie chavs? Like chavess or chavette, perhaps? If I'm going to join them, I really should speak the lingo proper.

"A random patchwork of violent council estates and traveller sites by the murky waters of the North Sea makes Bridlington one of the worst places to live in England

Beirut with Seaside Rock & Tat shops, Bridlington offers those of a Chav persuasion two additional favourite hang outs aside from the usual joys of wrecking children's playgrounds or necking Mad Dog 20/20 Kiwi & Lime outside JJB sports - the "fair" and the arcade.

Both of these are Chav institutions, with the fair consisting of a sea of Chavs screaming incessantly as they are packed onto badly constructed rides by mean looking pikeys all to the backdrop of 300 strobe lights and 3 year old handbag house at ear bleeding volume. Chavs could then hit the arcade, where the kids are abandoned to play in the traffic outside the door whilst Mum & Dad (or partner anyway) blow the incapacity benefit on the fruities & jumbo dogs.

If you ever have to visit this god-forsaken corner of Yorkshire, make sure it is out of season, when the smog of Superkings clears slightly, you can walk around without having to avoid pools of part digested chips and you don't have to look at huge crowds of fat, bare midriffed biffers taking their alsatians for a **** on the beach."

Interesting fact: Did you know that Barrow in Furness was once known as the armpit of Britian - you've insulted the place you live in a way that takes the crown from Barrow - well done.

Picking on people because you haven't got the intelligence to hold a constructive argument so to resort to personal insults isn't very clever.

It definitely is coming to Meadowhall. We received an update leaflet a couple of weeks back, sent out to every store. It announed the two flagship stores replacing Sanisburys will be Primark and Next.

Yeh its deffinatly Primark because they were holding interviews about a month ago for staff to start in July. I heard the Next is going to be really big, as in fill the whole of Sainsburys, which really annoyes me because they don't even sell nice clothes and they already have a big enough store next to Debenhams.

I'd rather get more value for my money than shop at next and get an expensive shirt or something that isn't even that nice. I live in Wath, so meadowhall is usually where I shop. I totally agree AmyFitz, I cannot fault value for money, most items I have wash as well as pricier garments. Underwear and accessories are as good as next or H & M, if not a little more funky and if its good enough for Oxford Street (Huge flagship store opened), and Marie Claire magazine, its good enough for Meadowhall.

Lets face it, Argos!!! has a unit there.........enough said.

Cannot wait for opening, no need at all to go to town now!!!

Just for info of those who have more money than they have sense... I have good job, well paid as does my hubby, homeowner, good schooling and enough brain not to spend stupid money on items I can get for fraction of price.

I've only just come across this thread on here and I can't believe how snobby some people have been about Primark.
Lately, I believe they have won high street fashion awards over the likes of H&M and Topshop for their clothes and value for money and regularly get mentions on TV and in Magazines.
I know it can get messy but what clothes shop doesn't at some point. At least they don't mess around trying to push customers in to having an account card or worrying how many add on sales they've made or if all the fixtures are inline with each other to within a millimetre of each other.
Give them a break, wait and see.

why would anyone want to shop at primark anyway? The last time I went in there I thought I was getting a great deal with 4 tops and three pairs of jeans for under £30 within a few weeks all the tops had holes in and all the zips had bust on the jeans.

What's the point of cheaper clothes when you only have to buy more to replace them a few weeks later .
In the long run it works out more expensive than buying from places like topshop as at least their clothes last longer and then there's always george at asda for cheap clothes that last longer. I had a £3 pair of jeans from there over a year ago now and they're still in great condition, a lot better than I can say for primarks clothes

none of the clothes or shoes that i have ever bought from primark have been particularly faulty. i work in retail and can say for a fact that shops with far more expensive merchandise often come back faulty, its the nature of manufacturing, not everything is consistently produced.

i have so much sympathy for the poor people who work in primark, the mess they have to deal with and the sheer rudeness and ignorance of a lot of customers is simply horrific.

But welcome anyway - I'm sure you'll get the hang of it if you keep posting.

Don't think that is called for! Haven't you got a sense of humour? Didn't you notice the smiley face?

Also, the post was neither random nor irrelevant! Welcome Samantha.

Yes, I do have a sense of humour, thank you. But sticking a smiley at the end of a statement doesn't automatically make it amusing.

Perhaps you'd care to explain why "all" the posters on the thread should now "feel stupid", because I'm damed if I can work out why they should.

[QUOTE=skala;1122722]Primark hasn't opened in meadowhall and i dont think there ever will be one

Primark has opened in Meadowhall - i have shopped there!

Go into through Boots and turn left - there's a new extension and there's allsorts of other shops down there too!

Miles bigger, brighter and more well laid out than the one in town

Some people who shop in Primark have got no respect for the goods.

Probably because they are so cheap.

How nasty?! - smilies at the end of statements always mean "I'm having a joke" to me?!

I've read the whole thread and the general bead was "no way would there be a Primark at Meadowhall"

Ease off a little there babe - perhaps you'd care to explain why you've got on your high horse about it? :loopy:

Well, I do apologise for being so dam pedantic, but I'll think you'll find that, despite the general snobbish attitude towards Primark, quite a few of us posted to say we were more than happy to be able to shop at Primark in Meadowhell.

So, unless "most" now means exactly the same as "all", Samantha1985's statement "Bet you all feel stupid now meadowhall DOES have a primark?!" (my bold) is the sort of sweeping generalisation that gets right up my nose.

And, strangely enough, I don't much care to be called "stupid" - or "babe" either, for that matter.

To follow up Dozy's comment; I feel I must jump in. Don't you realise that it's terribly rude to call someone "babe" - especially when you have the audacity to advertise a business (presumably yours) in your signature? Hardly doing the industry any favours is it?

Is calling someone babe as bad as calling someone flower ? I am a southener and we always call people babe just as people from Yorkshire call people flower...Just thought I'd ask.

Primark is amazing value if you are keen on fashion but cant afford to keep buying new every season, my friends daughter lives in there, come to think of it so do my friend and I !! haha

mmmmm no I'm not terribly rude - and no offense was intended with the babe thing Dozy.

I'm an easy going, friendly Sheffield lass and call everyone babe/love/flower - men, women and children - I've lived in Sheffield all my life have never had anyone who said any of these words were offensive. There are far more other words out there which are VERY offensive.

The thing that got me was:-
"Not a very intelligent first post - an apparently random and irrelevant comment that calls others Forummers "stupid".

I am one of "other forummers" and I didn't feel it was calling me stupid - I thought it was quite funny! and yes it was something I did think about saying but I notice the thread was started in 2006 (01-05-2006, 05:33 PM) so I thought well back then it wouldn't have even looked like a possibility.

The comment was posted on this thread so obviously it was directed at this thread but as no names were mentioned it was directed at no one in particular.

I felt Samantha was jumped on for just having a joke - poor lass (?) may never post again

I don't think its "terribly rude" at all! - just a term of endearment!

What do you mean my advertising a business in the signature? I don't see a business advertised at all!

I know this is a bit off topic but.. My O/H calls me babe, I personally would be a bit uncomfortable with anyone else calling me 'Babe'
