We got the train a few years ago. Lovely countryside - one of the most relaxing journeys of my life!

Trains the best way,, i've done the same journey loads. see www.trenitalia.it, you can book it all there and check times/routes. Eurostar is the best train,, really comfy but it's expensive. Inter-regionali trains are good too and a lot cheaper.
Remember to validate your ticket in the yellow machines at the station before you get on the train, i've seen so many foreigners getting fined for not doing it.

I agree: get the train. Although its some years ago now, I completed the exact same journey there and back in a day. I've used the Italian train service many times and its always been excellent.
The added advantage of using the train is that Venice station is bang in the middle of the city; you would have to transfer from the airport, and come to think of it, you'd have the exact same problem in Rome.
I'm guessing now, but I think that if 2 people started off at The Spanish Steps and raced each other to St Mark's Sq, my money would be on the train journey. .:) Although I wouldn't bet any more than the price of a bierra grande.
Thanks all,The train gets our vote.
I think I'd get the train too.
Treviso is about an hour on a bus from Venice (it's where ryanair fly to I think). It's quite a slow hour (traffic) and you'd have to leave a fair bit of time.
Can't agree more with what's been said. I think Italian train services like the Italian Eurostar are way above any of the British trains we have in UK. It is fast and efficient. You may also wanna consider the InterCity too. ES and IC are the fastest ones.
If you think the 4 hour journey is way too long, you can always break it up a little bit by doing a day trip in between these two cities. i.e. Venture into Florence. At least stopping for lunch will mean seeing a little bit of the city itself.
Venice is a small city, and can be done in a day or so. Maximum 2 days.
Definitely the train
there is usually different trains, prebookable or not, fast or less fast

too much hassle with airport and for rome both airport are not so close ( it will take at least 45minutes by bus, and by taxi will cost a bum!
