This site has been waste land for a few years now - does anyone know who bought it or what the plans for it are? I vote for a Tesco Metro! I really hope it's not gonna be a load of new flats...

You mean the one on the corner of Commonside / Springvale Road?

Flats I think - personally not bothered about a Tesco Metro - we've got a Tesco's down Infirmary Road plus Morrisons and Waitrose are only a few minutes drive. Co-op on Barber Road suffices for local odds 'n ends.

Yep that's the one. I heard it was going to be flats a few years ago, but there was some problem with money... anyone know any different?

I thought it would be a great area for little cultural market, with stalls similar to the ones you get on Portobello Road in Notting Hill, selling breads/cheeses/olives/fruit etc etc. Would go down well with the students.

It'd be a bit too parky in winter for something like that - and probably cause parking problems. I'd like to see something imaginative in the area like that though - you'd probably be best off with a small market hall where people could set up stall indoors - perhaps the site of PA Jewellers car park would be better.

I thought the plan was to build student flats on the site. To be honest, though, it always puzzled me as to who would be daft enough to want to live on the site of an old petrol station? Not me, that's for sure.

There's absolutely no problem with living on a former filling station.

ISTR that they were refused planning, but that may have now changed. the site is quite small and cramped, and perhaps it might have spoiled the view from the dollies hospital :)

I'm not convinced of that by any means. I certainly wouldn't take an unnecessary risk with my health like that.

I wouldn't live on a former filling station for all the tea in China - and I love my tea!

It started with an old abandoned diner, a man too long without sleep to continue!
Look out for people with their little fingers sticking out!!

I imagine there's a bit more foundation work to be done, with digging out the old tanks etc, but surely if they test the soil and it's ok, there's no problem?

That's exactly right. There is no problem at all if work is carried out correctly.
