View Full Version : Premium Bonds - National savings
Anyone ever won anything on these? I've got some and haven't won anything yet. :(
I'm growing a bit suspicious about the whole 'behind closed doors' approach.

I was given some of these as a kid until I was about 16 or so and I was lucky enough to win once... I think my sister won twice over the years and my mum, bless her, finally won after about 30 odd years some time back... :)
I guess it depends how much you've got, I think they work out averaging about 6% return so if You've got 10k you'd win pretty regular, if you've got £100, it quite unlikely, given that the smallest payout is £50.
I had quite a large sum previously and won, pretty much every month, but it still only turns out to be slightly better than putting it in the bank, mainly due to tax advantages.

The more you invest, the better chance of winning you have, A friend of mine has £25000 invested and has only ever won £50 at a time.
Well I don't have anywhere near 25,000 invested, however I do have a lot more than 100. I'll give it a few more months.
I know someone who has £2500 of bonds and averages about 3 small wins a year.
We have a syndicate at work which has over £7000 in. We've won about 9 times (£450) in the 4 years it's been running. Not a great return but the money's not lost, unlike the lottery.
You can check online if you have your bond holder....

Funky Dave 07-05-2004, 20:07 I knew someone who had very few bonds, but scooped £20,000. Lucky sod.

Yeah, ive won £50 twice  They were given to me as a baern by my grandad
Most of my family have Permium bonds, dad wins about seven times a year, I had one win last year but havent had one this year yet... Dads had a couple of biggies and he allways treats us all with his winnings :)
LordChaverly 16-08-2005, 14:59 Its funny, but I had a small number of bonds and won £50 on three occasions within an 18 month period.
I therefore calculated that if I increased my total substantially, I would be getting a lot more envelopes with £50 in them. I did so - and you know what? I've not won a penny since!
I think the statisticians would explain it by referring to the huge number of bonds in existence relative to my modest (albeit increased) holding.
absynthfairy 16-08-2005, 15:34 Do they run out or do you have them forever? I had some as a nipper, sure they are in a dusty biscuit tin at my dad's somewhere...
How can i find out if I've won anything?
Won 3 small prizes last month, making 5 so far this year.Total value however is only £350.
Have £3,000 in bonds and have probably won about £600 over the past 3-4 years.
I think the current annual prize fund equates to 3.25% so I have been doing rather better than average.
There is a premium bond line in which you put in your bond numbers and it tells you if you have unclaimed prizes.
Probabley get it on google

Erm you cant just buy five these days - see text below from the NS+I site :
Investment limits
The minimum for each purchase is £100 (or £50 when you buy by monthly standing order – see investing regularly for details). Purchases above the minimum are in multiples of £10, and you can hold up to £30,000 in total.
My aunt has 20k's worth and seems to win half a dozen times a year. Grrrr !
Good thing about the bonds is they dont take your prize away if you dont claim in a certain time like the lottery people do

Woohoo!! Just won another 2 x £50 prizes, good rate of interest this
I know this is an old thread but with the 50th birthday coming up it got me thinking about mine. Having read some of the amounts on here then I just as well forget it.
My first one was for £1 and dated 1959
Another for £1 and dated 1965
The biggest is for £4 and dated 1975. If this ever wins I shall have to try and find 3 other people that I worked with at the time because it was from the proceeds of a swear box that we had in our office:hihi:
Wouldn't is be great if they did a "booby prize" on ernies 50th birthday for anyone that had never ever won anything in a certain number of years...I reckon I would be up on top for that one.:hihi:

The average return you mention is false. It is actually stated to be about 3%, which is a little less than average tax payers can get in the form of a guaranteed return on savings.
Although you don't risk your capital, you are risking the interest you would earn on your savings. If you bought 10,000 PBs, you would need to have about six small wins a year to break even. So those with 10,000 are gambling around £300 a year.

The interest rate changes - it is 3.15% at the moment which is what you will get on average over time. However it may be a long time if you only have a couple as each bond has a 1 in 24 000 chance of winning a prize each month and so on average a single bond will win once every 2000 years! The maximum holder of £30 000 will on average therfore win 15 prizes a year (£750 at least)...but someone has to win the million pound prizes each month and I'm confident it'll be me in December. :suspect:

OK, just as I thought. If my paltry £6 hasn't so much as had a tickle in 47years then I just as well flush em down the loo.:hihi: I can't afford to hang on another 1953 years:(
If you glance down the list of winners you find that peole do win large amounts with very little holdings.
Must be a lovely surprise when the letter drops through the letterbox.
