View Full Version : Boxes for moving?
HarrietStar 04-05-2004, 11:30 presumming we find somewhere to move to in june (see my thread in the accomodation wanted section) we will need some cardboard boxes for packing our stuff. Supermarkets used to have them to pack your shopping but I think they all crush them down now. Does anyone know where we can get some? any supermarkets? or a special supplier of boxes for packing?
just ask them in the supermarket to save you some, most of them will.
Super-market boxes are no good as they won't stack. When I recently moved I bought special reinforced boxes from here. (http://www.moving-boxes-uk.co.uk/)
HarrietStar 04-05-2004, 12:21 i'm not really bothered about stacking because we will be moving ourselves, i will ask somerfield to save me some, thanks :)

It's up to you but don't under-estimate how many boxes you'll need or how much room they'll take up - especially if you can't stack boxes on top of one another!
I did moved myself from our 3 bed-house last year. We filled all 36 of the large reinforced boxes (from the web-site I gave you) and still had to get loads from the super-market! I also hired the biggest lorry I could get without an HGV licence (which I thought was far, far bigger than I needed) and bearly got everything in despite packing carefully - if I hadn't been able to stack the boxes from floor to ceiling I'd have never have managed it!
I word to the wise...
However many boxes you think you'll need... double it!
However big a van/lorry you think you need... double it!
However long you think it will take to load/unload... treble it!
Good luck!

We'll be using them in a few weeks time as we're on the move back to Sheffield!!

Can I buy the boxes off you when you've done?
Give SBS removals people a call - they sell them + tape etc.... And if your after bubble wrap, then staples were cheapest for a huge roll.
I'd suggest borrowing a tape gun as well as it makes life a lot easier when it comes to assembling them.
HarrietStar 07-05-2004, 15:12 ok, cheers for all the advice :) We only have 2 rooms (we're students) of stuff to move, so I think we'll get as many as we can from supermarkets and stock up on brown tape!
hi i ve just moved house got a few boxes if you want them got them from my mate that works in factory good quality and bigger than supermarkets otherwise tipping them from killamarsh
The old Banana boxes that certain supermarkets used were ideal for such things but they changed the design to a slimmer box with no depth.
mr.blaze 10-05-2004, 08:22 Bah I have just thrown out 50 large computer and monitor boxes. They would have been ideal and would have saved me the task of getting rid of them all :(
Sorry Max - already promised them to a friend!! Seems like everone is moving house at the moment!

designbunny 17-05-2004, 14:15 Does anyone know where i can get fairly strong cardboard boxes from, either for free or for really cheap?
I have tried Safeways and Tescos but either they don’t have any or they have really flimsy ones that would break under weight of books etc.
i.e. have you recently moved house + have spare ones now you've unpacked everything?
thanks!
mimicraze 17-05-2004, 14:35 ill let you know when i get them, i get them all the time you see as part of my job and they do my head in!!
