Right, my daughter is training to be a beauty therapist. She's obviously been trained to do a lot of things and at the moment is doing false nails. She's ready to take her assessment on this, so last night I was asked if I would let her put some on me....'yes...why not' I said

So there I was being a good girl and sitting there for an hour and a half having these things put on my own very nice nails I might add. Needless to say they look brilliant, I used to see my friends when she had them done at a salon and paid a fortune to have them done and mine look just as good as hers did.

Being a good mum, I've kept them on.....but there a right pain.....I can't do owt properly with my hands.....

We went out this afternoon and I was really pleased I'd got them but when I got home to do the everyday stuff, I find they don't half get in the way!!!!

I could also take somebodies eyes out with them.....I could be done for having a lethal weapons on the end of my fingers :hihi:

So, what I want to know is how you women cope that have them on all the time or do you pay to have them done to just go out and then have them taken off??

Come on girls give me a clue cos I think these are gonna be coming off tomorrow.

BTW, before they're removed, does anyone have a really bad itch as these would definately do the trick....plus take your skin off in the process :hihi:

Hi Dibs:wave:
I have silk wraps on i have worn these for 12 years now,at first i kept catching them constantly and making my own nails bleed,When you have had them on about 2 weeks you will get used to them,Maybe they could be too long for you? if they are try to cut them down alittle you may be able to cope with them alittle better that way!!!!
Whatever you do though dont pull them off as you will rip your own nails off with them, you need to soak them off in tip remover.

Hi beamer,

She actually cut them down to well under half of what they were and I had the silk wrap on them, I might get her to cut them down more and see if I cancope with them better.

My own nails generally refuse to break, so they naturally get to a silly length.

They put holes in rubber gloves, make wonderful instant screwdrivers, and eventually get caught on all the wrong keys on my keyboard :hihi: It's only the typing I can't cope with, and have no idea how professional typists cope with their talons

Yeah i think that would be wise,Its probably just the fact that your not used to wearing them,Like you say try cutting them down further and if that doesnt work for you then silk wraps are not for you!!!!

Strix.

I would love to be able to grow my own nails, but having these silk wraps on for such a long time my own nails are wrecked totally. They are very brittle and horrible also very thin, maybe thats with all the filing i do on them.

Terrible thing is though beamer, she wants me to go into college to be her client so that she can be assessed and apparently I have to leave them on for a week or two and then go back in so that she can be assessed again for repairs and maybe then being re-wrapped  :help:

iv had overlay on my own long nails for about 5 years now and at first i could not even do up zips with out help, but now they are just like an extension of my own hands, a brush, and as strix says i have all those little quirks too, but when i go out they look fab, and when i go away i leave them at about 2.5cm from nail base to tip, i dont find everyday stuff hard with them now, but it did, the only problem i have is getting gloves to fit my tiny hands and then my long nails damage the wool so the nails poke out the ends.

Sounds like your nails are like my sister's ;)
But she insists that wearing rubber gloves to do the dishes is wussy

Oh dear it looks like you are going to have to try and put up with them then,so the lass can get her assesment grades.
I'm sure in a few days you will get used to them.Honest ! try to persevere as best you can.Good Luck

See, I recon this is the perfect opportunity to opt out of all duvet cover wrestling, washing machine loading, dishwashing, bathroom cleaning, window wiping, floor sweeping, blah, blah, blah....

I wonder who you'll have to ask to do all those for you? ;)

My nails have always been short as they have a habbit of breaking in my mouth:hihi:
Although since i have been wearing silk wraps they are terrible, very thin and brittle, and i dont suppose filing them does any good either.I must addmit if one pops off i replace it straight away as i feel half undressed without long nails now.

beamer unless dipsy's daughter is going to offer to do them for you try the Hollywood nail bar in hillsb 01142315555, they are great and look after your nails underneath too, i would not go anywhere else! and i have never broken one or had one "fall" off as they sometimes do it cheaper salons.

My sis treated herself to some silk wraps once, but found her nails grew all horrid immediately afterwards. She decided to give it a miss after that. She just wears the stick on ones for nights out now. I can imagine it's a big decision though, and I do feel rather priveleged to be able to massacre my nails with DIY, and still have a presentable length to file tidy. I sometimes feel guilty I dont take more care of them though

Well good for you Strix. You keep looking after your naturally long beautiful nails.I honestly think its one of the first things women look at when noseying at other women.
I will confess i do get very envious of women who have nails like yours.
If you saw the state mine are in you would understand why !!!

I only keep them filed to stop them cracking, the cuticles get dry, and I haven't had them varnished in months which seems criminal when I read how much bother some women have to go to to get nice nails :(

I had them once for prom (acrylic... I think) - never again! On the night, I could barely hold my date for fear of shredding him. I took them off the day after, but they'd already butchered my nails :(

With difficulties!

I used to wear long extensions and grew mine really long til they were just silk wrapped and apart from the obvious problems such as poking yourself in the eye and all that jazz, the toughest thing for me was learning to get my contact lenses in and out. I ended up using the side of my forefinger pinched against the side of my thumb to remove them, but it took a fair amount of red weepy eyes before I mastered it.

Just to be Devil's advocate for a minute; don't you think that long nails look just a little bit tacky? I must admit to using those false nail thingies, that you had to stick on with super glue, many moons ago. Used to paint them a lovely shade of peach, as I recall, but this was in about 1986.

If I see women with really long nails now, I always think they look a little like talons and wonder how on earth they can do anything. I don't think I'd be able to type, I wouldn't be able to do anything remotely creative, and I'd be well and truly stuck if I still wore contact lenses.

My nails are short, though I don't bite them. I sometimes file them, or use a bit of nail polish, but that's about it. I don't think I could stand the bother of the upkeep required for long nails either.

I totally agree with you.

I have lovely nails which I look after and like yourself only cut and file them.

This has only been done to help out my daughter and I would never have them done on a regular basis like some women do....I couldn't cope with them for a start :hihi:

Did you say your daughter was doing beauty therapy? I dread to think what you're going to be subjected to in the future; some of the stuff they do hurts. :hihi:

I use to always bite my nails till I was about 11 years old & I had a fight with another girl & she won me coz she scratched the hell out of me with her nails.
I vowed from that day to this that I would never bite my nails & I haven't (I'm 39 now).
I find it very strange if one breaks & I can feel the end of my finger, thats when I have trouble doing articulate things. I type with my nails not my fingers & I hold a pen with my nails.
My nails are very strong & grow long so when they do break its a good hard snap that can be painful.
Tried silk wraps but I don't really need them.

The only false nails I ever had was those stick on jobs. I was going out for a posh night out and stuck on these long gold talons. They looked a real treat. Of course, then I found that one really ought to put knickers and tights on before getting them stuck on. The real crunch came when I succeeded in setting fire to one of them, trying to put out a cigarette. Serves me right for smoking!!! :hihi:

lol! ive done that! its smells vile and looks even worse.

i used to get my nail done all the time, but then i started doing them myself.

i just use the broadway full extensions from boots (natural square and cut them down to half length once theyre on) and im a bit good at them now. i tried doing my own silk wraps a couple of times too, unfortunately, the left hand always came out better than the right. although i really struggled with doing my own acrylic nails- pretty poor effort and i had to soak them off straight away they were that bad.

the only things i cant do with nails on is open cans of pop or tins with ring pulls- i have to use something else to flip the ring pull bit up.

i used to bite my nails, but stopped. now i have an annoying habit (it annoys me) of focusing my attention on my cuticles. wearing false nails is the only way to keep my fingers from being chewed- i cant get to the cuticles! lol

glad youre coping ok with them now dibsy. but once you get used to them, it will feel really wierd when you get them taken off. it still takes me a while now, i normally aim to leave my nails of for a day or 2 before i put the new set on every fortnight.

I used to go to a salon to have my nails done, but it became very expensive for the upkeep of them so i stopped going,I found doing my own is much cheaper, but alot harder than doing customers,i do my left hand fine but im not much good with my right. It's the filing thats the trouble.Although they do look nice when they are finished.
