Do you have service pack 2 on your Win XP? I had problems with it recognising USB stuff till I stuck SP2 on :)

Couple of things to try - firstly are there drivers for the panasonic one to try? If not get hold of SP2 from microsoft and install that which will recognise USB2 (I think winXP alone only recognises USB 1.1 but could be very wrong there!)

yeah theres drivers for the panasonic one but when i try to open the file on the cd all i get is this : you are attempting to open a file of type 'system file'(.sys)

these files are used by the operating system and various programmes.

editing them or modifying them could damage your system.

if you still want to open the file click the open with option otherwise click cancel

theres three files on the actual driver disk one is a read me file i belive

and the other are the same as the one described above

mayybe i should just throw it in the bin and buy another one :(

plug the player in, when windows asks you if you want to install a driver for the new hardware its just found, say yes, make sure the CD is in the drive, and keep clicking next. Windows should search the cd, find the driver, and install it.

When you plug your OLD player in, do you get any kind of ding-dong noise indicating it's been connected? If so, do you get the same noise when you connect the NEW one?
If you do, plug in the new one, wait for the ding-dong, right-click the My Computer icon, select Manage, select Device Manager and look for your player listed on the right hand side. If it is there, try right-clicking it and look for an uninstall option. Then unplug the player, reboot the PC, connect the player again and see what it says. If it asks for the drivers then browse to the CD drive (with the CD in that came with your player).
Shout up if that makes little sense...
